Abstract: Direct and indirect contact between wild and farmed cervids along perimeter fences may play a role in transmission of diseases like chronic wasting disease (CWD), but no studies have quantified such interactions. At 9 high-fenced commercial elk (Cervus elaphus) farms in Colorado, USA, during October 2003 to January 2005, we used animal-activated video to estimate rates of fence-line use by wild cervids, rates of direct contact between farmed and wild cervids, and probability of direct contact when wild cervids were present. We recorded 8-fold-more wild elk per unit time than mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) at fence lines. Depending on site, we recorded 0.66 to 46.90 wild elk per 1,000 hours of camera monitoring. We documented 77 interactions between wild and farmed elk involving naso-oral contact and no contact between wild mule deer and farmed elk. Rate of direct contact ranged from 0.00 to 1.92 direct contacts per 1,000 hours of camera monitoring among sites. Given recorded presence of wild elk, estimated probability of observing direct contact during a 2-minute video recording ranged from 0.00 to 0.11 among sites. Risk of direct contact was about 3.5 times greater for single woven-wire fence compared with offset electric fence attached to a single woven-wire fence. We observed no direct contact through double woven-wire fences. Because little is currently known about infection rates associated with infection mechanisms, we cannot infer a level of CWD infection risk from our results, but some form of double fencing should reduce potential for direct and indirect transmission of disease into or out of elk farms.  相似文献

The presence of organisms whose bodies have low preservation potential may be deduced by searching for the traces produced by them. The addition of predatory gastropods and soft-bodied epizoans to Quaternary marine faunas dominated by bivalves was facilitated by an examination of borings in bivalve shells. Borings attributed to predatory gastropods (ichnogenus Oichnus ) were observed in shells of Astarte spp., Hiatella arctica and Macoma calcarea. Astarte, Hiatella and Macoma were preyed upon in preference to other members of a diverse suspension-feeding bivalve community. Borings attributed to epizoans (ichnogenus Cautostrepsis ) were observed in bivalve shells (Astarte spp. Hiatella arctica ), calcareous algae and limestone clasts. Biotic interactions revealed by trace fossils are employed, for the first time, to reconstruct the trophic structure of arctic Quaternary marine benthic faunas. ▭ Arctic molluscs, palaeoecology, Oichnus, Caulostrepsis.  相似文献

Are Roots a Source of Abscisic Acid for the Shoots of Flooded Pea Plants?   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3  
Flooding the soil for 2–5 d decreased stomatal conductancesof pea plants (Pisum sativum L., cv. Sprite) with six or sevenleaves. This coincided with slower transpiration, increasedleaf water potentials and increased concentrations of abscisicacid (ABA) in the leaves. No increase in ABA was found in theterminal 20 mm of roots of flooded plants over the same timeperiod. Small stomatal conductances associated with increases in foliarABA were also found in plants grown in nutrient solution whenaeration was halted, causing the equilibrium partial pressuresof dissolved oxygen to fall below 05 It Pa. No increase in ABAconcentration in young secondary roots of the non-aerated plantswas detected after 24, 48 or 72 h, even when the shoot, thepresumed site of deposition for any ABA from the roots, wasremoved 5–6 h before analysis. Similarly, ABA concentrations in roots were not increased whenthe nutrient solution was de-oxygenated by continuous purgingwith nitrogen gas. The abscisic acid concentration in leaf epidermis,the tissue most likely to be the recipient of any ABA movingin the transpiration stream from oxygen-deficient roots, waslower than in the remaining parts of the leaf when examinedin the mutant Argenteum which possesses easily removable epidermallayers. It is concluded that the leaves of plants subjectedto flooding of the soil or oxygen shortage in the root environmentare not enriched substantially with ABA from the roots. Temporal events of gypsy moth vitellogenesis and ovarian development   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Abstract The vitellogenic period of gypsy moth ovarian development starts on day 3 of the pupal stage and continues through adulthood. During this period, rapid increases occur in follicle size, protein content, and wet weight of the ovary. Patency is observed on day 3 of the pupal stage.
Pre-vitellogenic follicles are formed in the last larval stadium. Newly formed follicles detach from the germarium on day 4, and increase rapidly to 140 per ovariole at the end of the last larval stadium. The pre-vitellogenic follicles are uniformly around 50 um in diameter. No vitellogenin is incorporated into the oocytes until the pupal stage.
Polyacrylamide gel electrophosesis (PAGE) in the presence of sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) analysis of male and female haemolymph samples and vitellogenic ovaries demonstrates the presence of two female-specific subunits of vitellogenin of 180 kD and 160 kD. These proteins are detected only in haemolymph and ovarian extracts of vitellogenic females. The molecular weight of the native protein determined by size exclusion chromatography is approximately 400–420 kD.
A highly sensitive double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to monitor the temporal changes in vitellogenin titre in haemolymph. Vitellogenin production starts on day 2 of the last larval stadium, reaching a maximum level by day 6 of the last larval stadium, and decreasing in the late pupal stage as vitellogenin was internalized into the oocytes. This is the first report of vitellogenin production occurring in the larval stage of a holometabolous insect. The fact that vitellogenin production and uptake occur during different stages of development in the gypsy moth, opens up some interesting questions concerning the underlying regulatory mechanisms controlling each process.  相似文献

DICK, M. VV., 1986. A new family and a new genus for two taxa previously assigned to Apodachlyella completa (J. E. Humphrey) H. Indoh (Peronosporomycetidae: Leptomitales) . At present two distinct taxa are referrable to Apodachlyella completa. New genus and species names (I'lerogone helodes M. W. Dick genus & sp. nov.) are necessary for the taxon reported from the British Isles. Confirmation of the unique wall membranes in the antheridia and oogonia is used to justify the placement of A. completa in a new, monotypic family of the Leptomitales (Apodachlyellaceae M. W. Dick fam. nova). Plerogone is placed provisionally in the Leptomitaceae.  相似文献

M., and Jenkins, W. 1985 Aerenchyma(gas-space) formation in adventitious roots of rice (Oryza sativaL.) is not controlled by ethylene or small partial pressuresof oxygen.—J. exp. Bot. 36: 1566–1572. The extent of gas-filled voids (aerenchyma) within the cortexof adventitious roots of vegetative rice plants (Oryza sativaL. cv. RB3) was estimated microscopically from transverse sectionswith the aid of a computer-linked digitizer drawing board. Gas-spacewas detectable in 1-d-old tissue and increased in extent withage. After 7 d, approximately 70% of the cortex had degeneratedto form aerenchyma. The extent of the voids in 1-4-d-old tissuewas not increased by stagnant, poorly-aerated external environmentscharacterized by sub-ambient oxygen partial pressures and accumulationsof carbon dioxide and ethylene. Treatment with small oxygenpartial pressures, or with carbon dioxide or ethylene appliedin vigorously stirred nutrient solution also failed to promotethe formation of cortical gas-space. Furthermore, ethylene productionby rice roots was slowed by small oxygen partial pressures typicalof stagnant conditions. Silver nitrate, an inhibitor of ethylene action, did not retardgas-space formation; similarly when endogenous ethylene productionwas inhibited by the application of aminoethoxyvinylglycine(A VG), aerenchyma development continued unabated. Cobalt chloride,another presumed inhibitor of ethylene biosynthesis, did notimpair formation of the gas in rice roots nor did it decreasethe extent of aerenchyma even if A VG was supplied simultaneously.These results contrast with those obtained earlier using rootsof Zea mays L. We conclude that in rice, aerenchyma forms speedily even inwell-aerated environments as an integral part of ordinary rootdevelopment There seems to be little or no requirement for ethyleneas a stimulus in stagnant root-environments where aerenchymais likely to increase the probability of survival. Seven monoclonal antibodies specific for mammalian β-tubulin demonstrate the microtubule cytoskeleton of Toxoplasma gondii and Leishmania donovani by indirect immunofluorescence microscopy. Immunoblots of T. gondii and L. donovani proteins separated by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis confirm the specificity of the monoclonal antibodies for tubulin. Differential staining of flagellar and subpellicular microtubule populations was not seen in L. donovani with these antibodies. All seven antibodies also detected the subpellicular microtubules of T. gondii, but the polar ring and conoid of this organism was not visualized by any of them. This technique provides a rapid and specific way to assess microtubular organization in whole organisms.  相似文献
