1. Until recently, the distribution of diatom species assemblages and their attributes (e.g. species richness and evenness) in relation to water depth have been identified but not quantified, especially across several lakes in a region. Here, we examined diatom assemblages in the surface sediment across a water‐depth gradient in eight small, boreal lakes in north‐western Ontario, minimally disturbed by human activities. 2. Surface‐sediment diatom assemblages were collected within each lake along a gentle slope from near‐shore to the centre deep basin of the lake, at a resolution of ~1 m water depth. Analysis of sedimentary samples provided an integrated view of assemblages that were living in the lake over several years and enabled a high‐resolution analysis of many lakes. The study lakes ranged in water chemistry, morphology and size and are located along an east–west transect approximately 250 km long in north‐western Ontario (Canada). 3. The majority of diatom species were distributed along a continuum of depth, with those taxa having similar habitat requirements forming distinct, though overlapping, assemblages. Three major zones of diatom assemblages in each lake were consistently identified: (i) a near‐shore assemblage of Achnanthes (sensu lato), Nitzschia, Cymbella (sensu lato) and other benthic species; (ii) a mid‐depth assemblage of small Fragilaria (sensu lato)/small Aulacoseira and various Navicula taxa; and (iii) a deep‐water assemblage of planktonic origin (mainly Discotella spp.). 4. The depth of the transition between assemblage zones varied between the eight lakes. The boundary between the deep‐water planktonic zone and the mid‐depth benthic zone varied according to water chemistry and was probably related to light attenuation. The boundary was deeper in lakes with the lower dissolved organic carbon and total phosphorus (TP) (i.e. less light attenuation) and vice versa. 5. Generally, species richness, species evenness and turnover rate of species as a function of depth were significantly lower in the planktonic assemblage zone in comparison with the two zones nearer the shore. Reproducibility of species and assemblage distributions across the depth gradient of the lakes illustrated that, despite potential for sediment transport, detailed ecological characterisation of diatom species can be gleaned from sedimentary data. The present study examines whether the nomadic social caterpillar Malacosoma disstria Hübner (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) can thermoregulate despite the lack of a tent, and evaluates the role of thermoregulation in directing the colony's behaviour. The presence of a radiant heat and light source (i.e. a lamp in the laboratory experiments and the sun in the field observations) enables caterpillar colonies to increase body temperature by basking (remaining still under a heat source) and this is only effective when caterpillars cluster in groups. Body temperatures achieved when basking in a group coincide with the temperatures at which the development rate is maximal for this species. Indeed, in the laboratory experiments, the presence of a lamp results in higher growth rates, confirming that thermoregulation is an advantage to group living. When a radiant heat/light source is provided at a distance from the food in the laboratory, caterpillars behave to maximize thermal gains: colonies move away from the food to bivouac (i.e. group together and remain still on a silk mat) under the lamp, spend more time on the bivouac and cluster in a more cohesive group. Thermal needs thus influence habitat selection and colony aggregation. Malacosoma disstria relies on developing rapidly, despite low seasonal temperatures, aiming to benefit from springtime high food quality and low predation rates; however, unlike others in its genus, it does not build a tent but instead exhibits collective nomadic foraging (i.e. the whole colony moves together between temporary resting and feeding sites). In this species, collective thermoregulatory behaviour is not only possible and advantageous, but also drives much of the colony's behaviour, in large part dictating the temporal and spatial patterns of movement. These findings suggest that thermoregulation may be an important selection pressure keeping colonies together.  相似文献

Observations on the chromosomes of nine species ofDahliaCav.(Asteraceae, Heliantheae—Coreopsidinae) show that somehave 2n=32, others 2n=64, with a third group having both chromosomenumbers in the same taxon. Karyotype investigations showed thatthe chromosomes can be divided into groups of 14 metacentricsplus two submetacentrics per set of 16 chromosomes.In situhybridizationusing an rRNA gene probe indicated that the 2n=32 species haveeight hybridization sites whilst the 2n=64 species have 16 sites.Silver nitrate staining of these regions showed that not allof these nucleolar organizers are active. Meiotic analysis atmetaphase I and pachytene, by synaptonemal complex spreading,shows that the 2n=32 species have exclusive bivalent formationwhereas the 2n=64 species have small numbers of univalents plusquadrivalents in addition to bivalents. This study proposesthatDahliaspecies with 2n=32 are allotetraploids whereas thosespecies and chromosome races with 2n=64 are their autopolyploidderivatives. ABSTRACT. It has long been thought that the cyst form of Pneumocystis carinii , which can resist host defenses and antimicrobial drugs, is responsible for relapses of P. carinii pneumonia. The thick wall of the cyst is immunogenic and rich in glucosyl/mannosyl and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine residues. In this study we have demonstrated the presence of a hitherto unreported outer membrane in the cyst wall of P. carinii . This membrane was detected by a combination of techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, freeze-fracture electron microscopy, and membrane labeling with fluorescent lipid analogs following treatment of P. carinii cysts from infected rats for 30 min with Zymolyase, a β-1–3 glucanase. As in gram-negative bacteria and blue-green algae, this 2nd membrane may have an important role in osmoregulation and nutrient utilization; it may also mediate the interaction of P. carinii with its host and serve as a target for drug therapy.  相似文献

A competency window for transformation of tomato cotyledonsby Agrobacterium tumefaciens was established. In vitro, tomatocotyledons could be transformed over a long time interval afterwounding, although the highest transformation competency occurredduring the first 24 h interval after wounding. Exogenous virulencegene-inducing factors (50 µM acetosyringone or a chloroform-solublefactor from tomato leaves) could be used to reverse the declinein transformation competency up until 96 h post-wounding. Asafranin-o stained material (found to contain fatty acids characteristicof suberin) was deposited by 96 h after wounding and thus, maycontribute further to the decreased transformation observedafter 96 h by presenting a physical barrier to infection. Plagiochila sect. Vagae is a large pantropical clade that is characterized morphologically by frequent terminal branching, vegetative distribution by propagules on the ventral surface of the leaves and a capsule wall with thickenings in all layers. Plagiochila corrugata from Brazil is characterized by strongly undulate, toothed leaf margins and represents the only known neotropical species of sect. Vagae with unispiral elaters. Plagiochila cambuena from Madagascar is distinguished by the same features. Maximum likelihood and parsimony analyses of 38 nrDNA ITS sequences of Plagiochila reveal P. corrugata and P. cambuena in a weakly (ML) to well (MP) supported monophyletic lineage within P.  sect.  Vagae . As an outcome of the morphological and molecular investigation, P. cambuena is relegated to the synonymy of P. corrugata. Plagiochila corrugata is placed in a Vagae -subclade with 11 further American species. The range of P. corrugata can be ascribed to long-range dispersal from the Neotropics rather than a Gondwanan distribution. Species from tropical Asia and Africa are placed at the base of the Vagae clade. Oviparous (egg-laying) lizards and snakes generally inhabit warmer climates than do related viviparous (live-bearing) taxa. This pattern is widely attributed to the failure of oviparous reproduction in cold climates, but the thermal regimes of potential nest-sites above and below the elevational cut-off for oviparous reproduction have never been quantified. We studied oviparous ( Bassiana duperreyi ) and viviparous ( Eulamprus heatwolei ) scincid lizards at such a site in the Brindabella Range of south-eastern Australia. Miniature data-loggers monitored temperatures of nest-sites and lizards in midsummer, partway through the incubation period of eggs in natural nests. Our results contradict the simplistic notion that mean nest temperatures determine this elevational limit for oviparity. Instead, potential nest-sites with average temperatures suitable for embryogenesis in Bassiana are available well above the threshold elevation. However, thermal minima decrease consistently with elevation and thus the maximum temperature needed for any given mean incubation temperature increases rapidly with elevation. Potential nest-sites above the elevational threshold can only attain mean temperatures high enough to sustain embryogenesis by having lethally high thermal maxima. Such nest-sites are available close to the soil surface, but cannot support development. In contrast, behavioural thermoregulation allows viviparous lizards to maintain high mean body temperatures concurrently with relatively low maximum temperatures, regardless of elevation. Paradoxically, oviparous reptiles may be restricted to low elevations not because nests that provide appropriate mean incubation temperatures are unavailable further up the mountain, but because eggs laid in such shallow nests would overheat.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 78, 325–334.  相似文献
