Abstract The Delmarva fox squirrel (Sciurus niger cinereus) has been listed as endangered by the United States Department of Interior since 1967. A high-priority task for the recovery of this taxon is to determine its current geographic distribution. Toward this end, we have identified a microsatellite locus that unambiguously differentiates Delmarva fox squirrels from eastern gray squirrels (S. carolinensis), which frequently co-occur with Delmarva fox squirrels. Analysis of this marker in noninvasively collected hair samples will allow unequivocal identification of localities occupied by Delmarva fox squirrels with a minimum investment of funds, time, and effort because handling individuals will be unnecessary. 1. Stream ecosystems are the products of interactions between hydrology, geomorphology and ecology, but examining all three components simultaneously is difficult and rarely attempted. Frequently, either geomorphology or hydrology is treated as invariable or static. 2. To examine the validity of treating either hydrology or geomorphology as static, we studied the individual and combined effects of hydrology and channel geomorphology on coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM) storage. Using data from an experimental leaf release in a hydrologically regulated stream we created a simple numerical model. This allowed us to quantify the relative influence of CPOM trapping and CPOM retention on total long‐term CPOM storage under variable regimes of flood frequency and geomorphic structure. 3. CPOM storage is a function of supply, flood frequency and the type and frequency of in‐stream structures. In‐stream structures perform two distinct functions, trapping and retention, whose relative importance in leaf storage changes with stream hydrology. Trapping is more important for CPOM storage in streams with few floods, while retention is more important in streams with frequent floods. Different structures (e.g. boulders, large wood, small wood) perform these functions at different efficiencies. We found that large wood trapped two to three times more leaves than the bank, but that the bank retained leaves two to three times more efficiently. 4. A modelled channel with five times the amount of large wood as the study channel (a ‘wood restoration’) initially stored 14% more leaves than the modelled ‘natural’ channel. After six floods, however, the modelled wood restoration channel stored 50% less CPOM than the natural channel as the large wood had high trapping but poor retention. The modelled natural channel contained structures that could both trap and retain. Thus, as different structures performed different functions, the structural complexity buffered the stream allochthonous energy base against changes in hydrology through its balance of trapping and retention. 5. As the frequency of floods increased, the spatial distribution of CPOM became increasingly patchy as storage was driven entirely by structures with high retention. Thus, the coupling of flood frequency and geomorphic structure influenced CPOM availability, which in turn has ramifications for the entire stream food web. 相似文献

Can short‐term stochastic variation in local weather conditions modify the thermal conditions inside lizard nests, and thus (potentially) the developmental rates, hatching success, and phenotypic traits of hatchlings from these nests? This hypothesis requires that (i) natural nests are poorly buffered thermally, such that ambient regimes affect temperatures inside the nest, and (ii) short‐term thermal variations modify attributes of the offspring. Field data on natural nests of the sub‐alpine skink Bassiana duperreyi confirm the existence of this first effect, and laboratory experiments substantiate the latter. Exposure to warmer‐than‐usual temperatures for 2 wéeks during the 9‐ to 16‐wéek incubation period doubled hatching success, and significantly modified hatchling phenotypes (hatching dates, offspring size and locomotor performance). The proportion of development completed prior to this exposure influenced the degrée of response. Exposure to a brief ‘window’ of higher‐than‐usual temperatures soon after oviposition had more effect on hatching time, egg survival and hatchling phenotypes than if the exposure occurred later in development. Thus, minor variations in weather conditions during incubation may have substantial effects on reptile populations. 相似文献

Data collected from 265 cropped Thomson's gazelle in northern Tanzania have permitted development of ageing criteria based on weights, horn growth and dentition. Most deciduous teeth are replaced between 12 and 15 months of age and the third molar becomes fully functional at nearly 2 y. Asymptotic horn length of about 32 cm is reached by males at 20–24 months. Dressed carcass weights were about 60 per cent of live weights, being slightly higher in males and higher in January than February. Females are capable of breeding before 1 y. Only single foetuses were found and these only in the right uterine horn. There was evidence of lambing every month but with May and November peaks. 相似文献

We studied House Finch Carpodacus mexicanus roosting behaviour during the non-breeding season using radiotracking and direct observations in Ithaca, NY, USA. In contrast to what has been reported in the literature and in contrast to what should be expected from Newton's European studies of cardueline finches, House Finches roost in small groups (mean 3.5; maximum 11) and do not display at roost sites. Seventy-seven per cent of the birds re-used the same tree on successive observations. In winter, birds re-used the same roost tree more often than in the autumn, and birds with mycoplasmal conjunctivitis tended to move more between roost trees than did birds without conjunctivitis. A small number of radiotagged birds that roosted in the same tree were observed together in the daytime more often than by chance, suggesting the existence of social bonds between birds (some same sex) during the non-breeding season. In the autumn the birds often roosted in leafed deciduous trees and closer to their daytime feeding locations than they did in winter. In winter all birds roosted in evergreen trees. It is possible that the reliable and predictable food sources at feeding sites offered by the public might have changed House Finch roosting behaviour. 相似文献

The genus Dolichovespula consists provisionally of 18 species. Aerial nest site characteristics have been established for seven species but most of these species show flexibility in their choice of nest sites and two species often nest in shallow subterranean situations. Colony length is usually just over 3 months to approximately 4 months, but at lower latitudes may extend to more than 5 months. Mature colony size is usually approximately 1000 cells with more large cells than small cells. Parasitized colonies have a shorter colony cycle and smaller colonies. During the production of the sexual brood the larva/worker ratio reaches its lowest value of approximately 2.5 larvae per worker. Colonies often have upper mixed combs of small and large cells. Total adult production is usually less than 2000 adults. Colonies of D. arenaria and D. norwegica may specialize in mainly producing males or queens. Variations in mature colony size and production of queens is probably a consequence of the number of workers present, particularly early in the colony cycle. 相似文献

PARALLEL EVOLUTION OF HAND ANATOMY IN KANGAROOS AND VOMBATIFORM MARSUPIALS: FUNCTIONAL AND EVOLUTIONARY IMPLICATIONS 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract: The anatomy of the mammalian hand is exposed to an intriguing interplay between phylogeny and function, and provides insights on phylogenetic affinities as well as locomotory habits of extinct species. Within the marsupial order Diprotodontia, terrestrial plantigrade quadrupedalism evolved twice, in the mostly extinct vombatiforms and in extant macropodoids. To assess the influence of functional and phylogenetic signal on the manus in these two clades, manual anatomy and digital proportions in specimens of eight extinct and three extant vombatiforms were investigated and compared with extant macropodoids and extant possums. The results reveal extensive parallelisms in the carpal region of vombatiforms and macropodoids, including flattened distal metacarpal facets, reduction of the palmar process of the hamatum, reduction of mid-wrist joint curve, extensive hamatum/scaphoid contact, and absence of a lunatum. These transformations appear to be related to stabilization of the wrist for plantigrade locomotion. Vombatiforms are apomorphic in scaphoid and triquetrum anatomy and their metacarpals are much more gracile than in other Diprotodontia. Manual diversity is greater in vombatiforms than in macropodoids, as probably was locomotor diversity. Digital proportions as well as wrist anatomy divide the extinct vombatiforms into species resembling arboreal diprotodontians, whereas others group with terrestrial quadrupedal kangaroos and wombats. The latter is suggested to be owing to plantigrade locomotion and/or large size. Carpal anatomy and digital proportions suggest that a range of earlier diverging vombatiforms may have been arboreal or scansorial. As such, we propose that the ancestor of extant vombatiforms (koalas and wombats) may have been arboreal, an option that deserves consideration in the reconstruction of vombatiform evolution. 相似文献
