Is there competition among ciliates and nematodes?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
1. Biotic interaction between the ciliate Cyclidium glaucoma and the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans was investigated by manipulating the densities of the organisms in microcosms with and without sediment. 2. After 11 days the abundance of ciliates, nematodes and bacteria as well as extracellular enzyme activity were determined. Ciliates had a negative effect on nematode abundance in microcosms without sediment and in microcosms with sandy sediment, whereas in muddy sediment the effect was less distinctive. An effect of nematodes on ciliates was not observed. 3. The common resource bacteria were not affected negatively by the activity of the grazers. Overall grazer biomass increased with the addition of sediment to the microcosms, suggesting a rise of the carrying capacity in the experimental system. Especially in muddy sediment the abundance of bacteria and extracellular enzyme activity was higher compared to the microcosms without sediment. 4. The results of the experiment suggest a strong interspecific competition between nematodes and ciliates, where nematodes are, at least temporary, strongly affected.  相似文献

The structures of volatile chemicals released by parasitic wasps in the family Bethylidae are shown to correspond to the subfamily to which the species belong. Species in the Epyrinae release skatole (3-methylindole) and species in the Bethylinae release a spiroacetal (2-methyl-1,7-dioxaspiro [5.5]undecane): these compounds are chemically very different. The enantiomeric composition of the spiroacetal differs between congeneric species. Chemical release is a discrete event under the active control of both male and female wasps. Structural differences between the mandibular glands and intramandibular glands suggest the mandibular glands to be the source of released volatiles. Real-time mass spectrometry shows that the spiroacetal is released by Goniozus nephantidis females during dyadic resource contests, with release more common during more aggressive interactions. Chemical tagging with deuterium further shows that the volatile is released by the loser of an agonistic interaction and not the winner. The impact of sublethal heat on photosynthetic performance, photosynthetic pigments and free radical scavenging activity was examined in three high mountain species, Rhododendron ferrugineum, Senecio incanus and Ranunculus glacialis using controlled in situ applications of heat stress, both in darkness and under natural solar irradiation. Heat treatments applied in the dark reversibly reduced photosynthetic performance and the maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), which remained impeded for several days when plants were exposed to natural light conditions subsequently to the heat treatment. In contrast, plants exposed to heat stress under natural irradiation were able to tolerate and recover from heat stress more readily. The critical temperature threshold for chlorophyll fluorescence was higher under illumination (Tc) than in the dark (Tc). Heat stress caused a significant de‐epoxidation of the xanthophyll cycle pigments both in the light and in the dark conditions. Total free radical scavenging activity was highest when heat stress was applied in the dark. This study demonstrates that, in the European Alps, heat waves can temporarily have a negative impact on photosynthesis and, importantly, that results obtained from experiments performed in darkness and/or on detached plant material may not reliably predict the impact of heat stress under field conditions.  相似文献

In an earlier study, we found that rice (Oryza sativa) grown in nutrient solution well‐supplied with Zn preferentially took up light 64Zn over 66Zn, probably as a result of kinetic fractionation in membrane transport processes. Here, we measure isotope fractionation by rice in a submerged Zn‐deficient soil with and without Zn fertilizer. We grew the same genotype as in the nutrient solution study plus low‐Zn tolerant and intolerant lines from a recombinant inbred population. In contrast to the nutrient solution, in soil with Zn fertilizer we found little or heavy isotopic enrichment in the plants relative to plant‐available Zn in the soil, and in soil without Zn fertilizer we found consistently heavy enrichment, particularly in the low‐Zn tolerant line. These observations are only explicable by complexation of Zn by a complexing agent released from the roots and uptake of the complexed Zn by specific root transporters. We show with a mathematical model that, for realistic rates of secretion of the phytosiderophore deoxymugineic acid (DMA) by rice, and realistic parameters for the Zn‐solubilizing effect of DMA in soil, solubilization and uptake by this mechanism is necessary and sufficient to account for the measured Zn uptake and the differences between genotypes.  相似文献

1. Our aim was to analyse the impact of zooplankton dynamics on the relative importance of two mechanisms contributing to the loss of phosphorus (P) from the epilimnion of stratified lakes: net population incorporation into zooplankton biomass and P sedimentation. 2. We established enclosures without Daphnia (control), with a growing Daphnia population (treatment D) and with a high, stable Daphnia population (treatment D+). The P incorporated in zooplankton biomass and sedimented was measured at short intervals over a period of 17 days. 3. In both Daphnia treatments, sedimentation increased and the P content of sedimented matter was higher than in the control and highest in D+. The P loss by sedimentation between day 3 and 17 was generally high (>25%, >1.8% day?1) with particularly high values in D+ (~60%, 4.3% day?1). Phosphorus sedimentation was higher in the zooplankton treatments, although the contribution of exuviae and dead Daphnia was minor. Faecal material was probably a major component of sedimentation. 4. By contrast, the amount of P in zooplankton (mainly Daphnia) biomass increased in D but remained constant in D+. Phosphorus loss owing to net population incorporation was generally low and ranged up to 6.5% (0.5% day?1) in treatment D. A positive relationship between Daphnia dry mass and P sedimentation, as well as P incorporation, was found. 5. Sedimentation is evidently an important cause of P loss from the epilimnion where Daphnia is abundant. By contrast, P incorporation into Daphnia biomass may only become an important loss factor when the population is growing.  相似文献

1. Sampling of lake fish assemblages is a challenging task in fish science, and the information obtained strongly depends on the choice of sampling gear. The use of more than one sampling technique is generally preferred in order to achieve a comprehensive view on fish assemblage structure. Therefore, the knowledge of whether catches between fishing gears are comparable is crucial. 2. We compared catches in benthic multi‐mesh gillnets with fish biomass estimates obtained by vertical hydroacoustics in 18 European lakes strongly varying in morphometry and trophic status. Separate analyses were conducted for different depth strata and for several fish length thresholds to account for depth‐ and size‐selective gillnet catches. 3. Gillnet catches and hydroacoustically obtained fish biomass estimates were significantly correlated. The strength of correlations was independent of the fish length thresholds applied, but varied across different depth strata of the lakes, with the strongest correlations occurring in the shallow strata. 4. The results support the applicability of vertical hydroacoustics for the quantification of fish biomass in stratified lakes. Survey designs combining hydroacoustics with limited gillnetting at sampling dates shortly one after the other, the latter for the purpose of inventory sampling only, are a cost‐effective strategy for sampling fish assemblages in lakes. However, gillnet sampling does not provide reliable fish density estimates in very deep lakes with separate, pelagic‐dwelling fish assemblages.  相似文献

Land use is a critical factor in the global carbon cycle, but land‐use effects on carbon fluxes are poorly understood in many regions. One such region is Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, where land‐use intensity decreased substantially after the collapse of socialism, and farmland abandonment and forest expansion have been widespread. Our goal was to examine how land‐use trends affected net carbon fluxes in western Ukraine (57 000 km2) and to assess the region's future carbon sequestration potential. Using satellite‐based forest disturbance and farmland abandonment rates from 1988 to 2007, historic forest resource statistics, and a carbon bookkeeping model, we reconstructed carbon fluxes from land use in the 20th century and assessed potential future carbon fluxes until 2100 for a range of forest expansion and logging scenarios. Our results suggested that the low‐point in forest cover occurred in the 1920s. Forest expansion between 1930 and 1970 turned the region from a carbon source to a sink, despite intensive logging during socialism. The collapse of the Soviet Union created a vast, but currently largely untapped carbon sequestration potential (up to~150 Tg C in our study region). Future forest expansion will likely maintain or even increase the region's current sink strength of 1.48 Tg C yr?1. This may offer substantial opportunities for offsetting industrial carbon emissions and for rural development in regions with otherwise diminishing income opportunities. Throughout Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, millions of hectares of farmland were abandoned after the collapse of socialism; thus similar reforestation opportunities may exist in other parts of this region.  相似文献
