Increased body size in Brachyteles has been regarded as an important evolutionary adaptation that allowed a greater reliance on leaves compared to other more frugivorous Atelidae, but its association with muriqui positional behavior and substrate use is still unknown. Here, we present original data on the feeding and resting postures of the northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) and evaluate predictions about the relationships between body size, postural behavior, and substrate use derived from previously published data for other atelids (e.g. Alouatta, Ateles, and Lagothrix). The study was undertaken from August 2002 to July 2003 on a large group of well‐habituated muriquis inhabiting the Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural – Felíciano Miguel Abdala in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Consistent with our predictions, we found that B. hypoxanthus was highly suspensory during postural feeding (60.9%) and commonly used tail–hind limb suspension/horizontal tripod (38.0%) or tail–forelimb/hind limb suspension (21.4%). However, although tail‐suspensory postures permitted the muriquis to use the terminal canopy and small‐sized substrates, these areas were also accessed via tail‐assisted above‐branch postural behaviors involving multiple substrates. Unexpectedly, tail‐suspensory postures were found to be frequently associated with large substrates, tree trunks, and the understory. We suggest that Brachyteles’ ability to access food resources from all areas of a feeding tree and from tree crowns at different canopy levels may account for their ability to efficiently exploit food resources in seasonal disturbed forest fragments of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest today. Birds in the northern hemisphere usually increase mass reserves in response to seasonal low temperatures and shorter day length that increase foraging unpredictability and so starvation risk. In the lowland tropics, relatively low temperatures and short day lengths are absent and so the risk of starvation may be reduced, leading to much smaller seasonal effects on mass. Nevertheless, other factors such as high temperatures and water and food availability may vary greatly between tropical wet and dry seasons, leading to variable starvation risk and seasonal mass effects. Using data collected from 47 species of birds caught over a 10‐year period in a tropical savannah region in West Africa we tested for seasonal variation in mass in response to a predictable, strongly seasonal tropical climate. Many species (91%) showed seasonal variation in mass, and this was often in a clear annual pattern that was constant across the years. Many species (89%) varied their mass in response to seasonally predictable rainfall. Annual variation in mass was also important (45% of species). Relatively few species (13%) had a seasonal pattern of mass variation that varied between years. Feeding guild or migratory status was not found to affect seasonal or annual mass variation. Seasonal mass change was on average 8.1% across the 21 species with a very large sample size and was comparable with both northern and southern temperate species. Our study showed that biologically significant consistent seasonal mass variation is common in tropical savannah bird species, and this is most likely in response to changing resource availability brought about by seasonal rainfall and the interrupted foraging response due to the constraints of breeding.  相似文献

Social Transformation and Its Human Costs in the Prehispanic U.S. Southwest   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
ABSTRACT  Change is inevitable, but some changes and transformations are more dramatic and fraught with suffering than others. Resilience theory suggests the concept of a "rigidity trap" as an explanation for these differences. In rigidity traps, a high degree of connectivity and the suppression of innovation prolong an increasingly rigid state, with the result that the eventual transformation is harsh. Three archaeological cases from the U.S. Southwest (Mimbres, Mesa Verde, and Hohokam) and new methods for assessing transformations and rigidity are used to evaluate this concept. They reveal the expected association between the severity of transformation and degree of rigidity, suggesting that a rigidity trap contributed to the Hohokam decline, which included significant human suffering. Possible causes of rigidity, with implications for today's world, are explored.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Since the 1940s, eastern spotted skunks (Spilogale putorius) have declined dramatically throughout the Midwest. One hypothesis for the decline is the loss of suitable habitat, although little is known about the ecological requirements of this species. To elucidate seasonal home range and habitat selection by eastern spotted skunks, we conducted telemetry-based field work in the Ouachita Mountains of western Arkansas, USA. During 2 years of field work, we collected day- and nighttime radiolocations for 33 eastern spotted skunks. We used kernel-based utilization distributions, volume of intersection indices, and weighted compositional analysis to evaluate seasonal home range dynamics and habitat selection. Although we found moderate adult male site fidelity, there were large seasonal differences in home range size, with ranges of between 76 ha and 175 ha (± 22–62 SE) during summer, fall, and winter, and home ranges of 866 ha (± 235 SE) during spring. Male home range increases in the spring were likely caused by questing behavior in search of reproductive females. Females maintained home ranges of 54 ha to 135 ha (± 7–30 SE) and moderate site fidelity during all seasons. During each season, we observed selection of young shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata) and hardwood stands over other available cover types, likely due to a preference for a dense, complex understory and a closed canopy overstory to reduce predation risk. Most habitats in the study region were managed for an herbaceous understory and an older, more open canopy, in part to benefit red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis) populations. Thus, if simultaneous management for these 2 vertebrates is a goal, a balance of early and late successional habitat should be reached.  相似文献

What and how do maggots smell?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The olfactory response of maggots (the larvae of cyclorrhaphous flies) and its neuroanatomical basis have been a subject for scientific investigation since the 17th century, preoccupying both fundamental and applied scientists. Despite its apparently arcane nature, the subject raises a series of major neurobiological problems, in particular, the relationship between the number of odours that can be detected and the apparently simple systems of detection and processing available to larvae. Molecular biological techniques in both neuroanatomy and cell biology have made it possible to begin to resolve some of these problems, if data from a wide range of studies are integrated. Four sectors of research on a large number of species are reviewed: the behaviour involved in the olfactory response, the wide range of odours that can be detected, the neuroanatomical basis of olfaction in cyclorrhaphous larvae and the number of receptors involved in detecting these odours. Finally, a neuroanatomical model of olfactory processing is presented, together with perspectives for future research, emphasising the importance of studying the ecology of the species under investigation.  相似文献

Greenhouse and field experiments showed that sharp eyespot disease can reduce establishment in wheat seedlings. Increasing disease severity caused a decrease in height and dry weight of surviving seedlings. Infection by the pathogen caused a reduction in tillering. Experiments also showed that a high incidence of disease can cause a reduction in the yield of grain of mature plants, but the disease level necessary for such effects is far higher than that usually encountered in the field. Survey work in the East of Scotland in 1963-65 showed a high percentage of crops infected with the disease. But even in 1964, a year of comparatively high disease incidence, there were few crops with a level of infection as high as that shown to affect yield.  相似文献

The key for the other two species was most likelysoil water availability, especially during the seedling stageforA. deserti. The wetter soil conditions on 20° north-facingslopes at 820 m apparently led to individual plants ofP. rigidathatwere twice as large as on south-facing slopes. Balancing selection is one mechanism that may explain why diversity is maintained in wild populations. However, relatively few examples of genes showing evidence of balancing selection have been identified, particularly in plants. In this issue, Reininga et al . (2009) present three Arabidopsis loci that show strong evidence of balancing selection. The loci, discovered using a genome-scanning approach, encode proteins with diverse predicted functions: starch synthesis and control of gene expression. These three genes were identified by scanning only a small fraction of the Arabidopsis genome, suggesting that balancing selection may be more prevalent than previously known.  相似文献
