Abstract. The feeding intervals of tsetse flies have been estimated from the nutritional state of flies caught in traps. However, such estimates have been disputed on the grounds that traps catch a biased, hungry sample of the flies which are seeking hosts and will feed. In this paper we present data on the nutritional state of tsetse flies caught approaching and feeding on oxen. Individual oxen were surrounded with an incomplete ring of electric nets which caught Glossina pallidipes Austen that were approaching, departing unfed and departing fed from an ox. Non-teneral males caught in this way were analysed for their fat and haematin contents. The feeding interval was estimated from a comparison of the frequency distributions of the pre- and post-feed haematin contents of the flies which fed. The former was not measured directly, and was deduced from the frequency distributions of the haematin contents of the male flies caught approaching and departing unfed from the oxen, since it is assumed that the departing unfed and fed flies together form a sample of the approaching flies. There was no difference between the frequency distributions of haematin contents of flies caught approaching and departing unfed, and therefore the pre-feed haematin contents of the males which fed should have the same frequency distribution. Comparison of this distribution with that of the post-feed haematin contents of the males which fed indicated that the majority of male G.pallidipes were returning to feed after digesting on average 1.4 log haematin units of the previous bloodmeal. From data published elsewhere, this corresponds to a mean feeding interval of 42-60h. There was a strong, linear, negative relationship between the fat contents of males and their probability of taking a bloodmeal, suggesting that fat content is important in determining the feeding behaviour of tsetse flies.  相似文献

1. The simultaneous effects of allelochemicals ingested by herbivorous insect prey and prey scarcity on the performance of a generalist insect predator were examined.
2. Fifth-instar predatory stinkbugs ( Podisus maculiventris : Pentatomidae) were fed caterpillars ( Manduca sexta : Sphingidae) in three prey scarcity treatments: every day (unlimited amount), one caterpillar every third day, one caterpillar every fifth day. The caterpillars were fed either a plain diet or a diet containing rutin, chlorogenic acid and tomatine, which are three of the major allelochemicals in tomato leaves ( Lycopersicon esculentum : Solanaceae), the preferred food of these caterpillars.
3. Food consumed, efficiency of conversion of ingested food to biomass (ECI), biomass gained, stadium duration and relative growth rate (RGR) of predators were negatively affected by prey scarcity. The allelochemicals negatively affected food consumed and ECI.
4. There were prey scarcity by allelochemical interactions for ECI, biomass gained and RGR. For ECI, the allelochemicals had a greater negative impact on the predatory stinkbugs when prey were scarce. When prey diet contained allelochemicals, biomass gained and RGR declined more steeply with increased prey scarcity. There was an allelochemical by predator gender interaction for biomass gained. Allelochemicals had no effect on biomass gained by female stinkbugs, whereas biomass gained declined more steeply with increased prey scarcity for male stinkbugs fed caterpillars containing allelochemicals than for males fed control caterpillars.  相似文献

Many studies, largely from cool‐temperate latitudes, have investigated the relationship between the timing of biological events and changes in climatic conditions during the past few decades. Relatively little is known about the response of plants and animals at lower latitudes. Here we show that the average first spring flight of 23 butterfly species in the Central Valley of California has advanced to an earlier date over the past 31 years. Among the species that have appeared significantly earlier, the average shift is 24 days. Climatic conditions (largely winter temperature and precipitation) are found to explain a large part of the variation in changing date of first flight. These results suggest a strong ecological influence of changing climatic conditions on a suite of animals from a mid‐latitude, Mediterranean climate.  相似文献

To investigate climatic influence on floodplain trees, we analysed interannual correspondences between the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), river and groundwater hydrology, and growth and wood 13C discrimination (Δ13C) of narrowleaf cottonwoods (Populus angustifolia) in a semi‐arid prairie region. From the Rocky Mountain headwaters, river discharge (Q) was coordinated with the PDO (1910–2008: r2 = 0.46); this pattern extended to the prairie and was amplified by water withdrawal for irrigation. Floodplain groundwater depth was correlated with river stage (r2 = 0.96), and the cottonwood trunk basal area growth was coordinated with current‐ and prior‐year Q (1992–2008: r2 = 0.51), increasing in the mid‐1990s, and decreasing in 2000 and 2001. Annual Δ13C decreased during low‐flow years, especially in trees that were higher or further from the river, suggesting drought stress and stomatal closure, and male trees were more responsive than females (?0.86 versus ?0.43‰). With subsequently increased flows, Δ13C increased and growth recovered. This demonstrated the linkages between hydroclimatic variation and cottonwood ecophysiology, and we conclude that cottonwoods will be vulnerable to drought from declining river flows due to water withdrawal and climate change. Trees further from the river could be especially affected, leading to narrowing of floodplain forests along some rivers.  相似文献

Burial is one of the major factors influencing plant ecology in deserts and coastal areas. Consequently, many studies have measured the responses of dune plants to sand burial. However, there remains little agreement about the mechanisms and characteristics constituting the burial response of plants. In particular, stimulation of growth has been reported as the most common plant burial response; however, stimulation has not been reported consistently among studies. Here, a literature survey showed that the depth of burial relative to the height of the plant determined whether the growth of a species was stimulated by burial. Growth stimulation was limited to shallow burial depths, while burial depths greater than the height of the plant consistently resulted in reduced growth. As studies used widely differing burial depths or units of growth measurement, the variation in reported stimulation of plant growth can be partly attributed to differences in experimental procedure. The stimulation of growth in many species was accompanied by an increase in photosynthesis over a limited period and by a shift in biomass allocation from root to shoot. Most plants demonstrated stimulated growth (up to 200%) in response to shallow burial indicating that some burial response mechanisms are general to many species. However, a few specialist dune species displayed a much greater ability to respond to burial (up to 700% stimulation of plant mass). Although allocation shifts and increased photosynthesis have been shown to be associated with dune plant burial response, there remains a need for field measurements that focus on the diversity of mechanisms underlying plant response to burial.  相似文献
