The outcome of mate choice depends on complex interactions between males and females both before and after copulation. Although the competition between males for access to mates and premating choice by females are relatively well understood, the nature of interactions between cryptic female choice and male sperm competition within the female reproductive tract is less clear. Understanding the complexity of postcopulatory sexual selection requires an understanding of how anatomy, physiology and behaviour mediate sperm transfer and storage within multiply mated females. Here we use a newly developed molecular technique to directly quantify mixed sperm stores in multiple mating females of the black field cricket, Teleogryllus commodus. In this species, female postcopulatory choice is easily observed and manipulated as females delay the removal of the spermatophore in favour of preferred males. Using twice‐mated females, we find that the proportion of sperm in the spermatheca attributed to the second male to mate with a female (S2) increases linearly with the time of spermatophore attachment. Moreover, we show that the insemination success of a male increases with its attractiveness and decreases with the size of the female. The effect of male attractiveness in this context suggests a previously unknown episode of mate choice in this species that reinforces the sexual selection imposed by premating choice and conflicts with the outcome of postmating male harassment. Our results provide some of the clearest evidence yet for how sperm transfer and displacement in multiply mated females can lead directly to cryptic female choice, and that three distinct periods of sexual selection operate in black field crickets.  相似文献

Recent Advances in Our Knowledge of the Myxozoa   总被引:20,自引:0,他引:20
In the last few years two factors have helped to significantly advance our understanding of the Myxozoa. First, the phenomenal increase in fin fish aquaculture in the 1990s has lead to the increased importance of these parasites; in turn this has lead to intensified research efforts, which have increased knowledge of the development, diagnosis. and pathogenesis of myxozoans. The hallmark discovery in the 1980s that the life cycle of Myxobolus cerebralis requires development of an actinosporean stage in the oligochaete. Tubifex tubifex, led to the elucidation of the life cycles of several other myxozoans. Also, the life cycle and taxonomy of the enigmatic PKX myxozoan has been resolved: it is the alternate stage of the unusual myxozoan, Tetracapsula bryosalmonae, from bryozoans. The 18S rDNA gene of many species has been sequenced, and here we add 22 new sequences to the data set. Phylogenetic analyses using all these sequences indicate that: 1) the Myxozoa are closely related to Cnidaria (also supported by morphological data); 2) marine taxa at the genus level branch separately from genera that usually infect freshwater fishes; 3) taxa cluster more by development and tissue location than by spore morphology; 4) the tetracapsulids branched off early in myxozoan evolution, perhaps reflected by their having bryozoan, rather than annelid hosts; 5) the morphology of actinosporeans offers little information for determining their myxosporean counterparts (assuming that they exist); and 6) the marine actinosporeans from Australia appear to form a clade within the platysporinid myxosporeans. Ribosomal DNA sequences have also enabled development of diagnostic tests for myxozoans. PCR and in situ hybridisation tests based on rDNA sequences have been developed for Myxobolus cerebralis, Ceratomyxa shasta, Kudoa spp., and Tetracapsula bryosalmonae (PKX). Lectin-based and antibody tests have also been developed for certain myxozoans, such as PKX and C. shasta. We also review important diseases caused by myxozoans, which are emerging or re-emerging. Epizootics of whirling disease in wild rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) have recently been reported throughout the Rocky Mountain states of the USA. With a dramatic increase in aquaculture of fishes using marine netpens, several marine myxozoans have been recognized or elevated in status as pathological agents. Kudoa thyrsites infections have caused severe post-harvest myoliquefaction in pen-reared Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), and Ceratomyxa spp., Sphaerospora spp., and Myxidium leei cause disease in pen-reared sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and sea bream species (family Sparidae) in Mediterranean countries.  相似文献

Sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus L.) grown at 30°C werecooled to 13°C in the light in atmospheric CO2 or low CO2,or in darkness. Photosynthetic rate at 30°C after coolingwhole plants in atmospheric CO2 for 12 h during a photoperiodwas significantly lower than at the start of the photoperiodcompared to plants cooled at low CO2, those cooled in the darkand those maintained at 30°C. Amounts of sucrose, hexosesand starch in leaves at 13°C increased throughout a 14 hphotoperiod to levels higher than in leaves at 30°C, whereamounts of sucrose and hexoses were stable or falling after4 h. Carbohydrate accumulation at 13°C during this photoperiodwas more than twice that at 30°C. After three photoperiodsand two dark periods at 13°C carbohydrate levels in leaveswere still as high as at the end of the first photoperiod, butless carbohydrate accumulated during the photoperiods than duringthe first photoperiod, and more was partitioned as starch. Amountsof soluble carbohydrate in roots were greater after 14 h at13°C than in roots of plants at 30°C. Loss of 14C fromleaves at 30°C as a proportion of 14CO2 fixed by them at30°C, decreased after exposure of plants to 13°C inthe light for 30 min prior to 14CO2feeding. Results indicatean effect of cold on the transport process that was light-dependent.It is inferred that the reduction in the proportion of 14C lostfrom leaves after 10 h cooling was due to reduced sink demand, whereas the rise in the proportion of 14C lost from leaves after24 h reflects reduced photosynthetic rate. The coincidence ofreduced photosynthetic rate with raised carbohydrate levelsin leaves maintained at 30°C throughout, whilst the restof the plant was cooled to 13°C in the light implies feedbackinhibition of photosynthesis. This may reduce the imbalancebetween source and sink in sunflower during the first days oflong-term cooling. Key words: Temperature, carbon export, carbohydrates, photosynthesis, sunflower  相似文献

To investigate climatic influence on floodplain trees, we analysed interannual correspondences between the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), river and groundwater hydrology, and growth and wood 13C discrimination (Δ13C) of narrowleaf cottonwoods (Populus angustifolia) in a semi‐arid prairie region. From the Rocky Mountain headwaters, river discharge (Q) was coordinated with the PDO (1910–2008: r2 = 0.46); this pattern extended to the prairie and was amplified by water withdrawal for irrigation. Floodplain groundwater depth was correlated with river stage (r2 = 0.96), and the cottonwood trunk basal area growth was coordinated with current‐ and prior‐year Q (1992–2008: r2 = 0.51), increasing in the mid‐1990s, and decreasing in 2000 and 2001. Annual Δ13C decreased during low‐flow years, especially in trees that were higher or further from the river, suggesting drought stress and stomatal closure, and male trees were more responsive than females (?0.86 versus ?0.43‰). With subsequently increased flows, Δ13C increased and growth recovered. This demonstrated the linkages between hydroclimatic variation and cottonwood ecophysiology, and we conclude that cottonwoods will be vulnerable to drought from declining river flows due to water withdrawal and climate change. Trees further from the river could be especially affected, leading to narrowing of floodplain forests along some rivers.  相似文献

Marshes worldwide are actively degrading in response to increased sea level rise rates and reduced sediment delivery, though the growth rate of vegetation plays a critical role in determining their stability. We have compiled 56 measurements of aboveground annual productivity for Spartina alterniflora , the dominant macrophyte in North American coastal wetlands. Our compilation indicates a significant latitudinal gradient in productivity, which we interpret to be determined primarily by temperature and/or the length of growing season. Simple linear regression yields a 27 g m−2 yr−1 increase in productivity with an increase of mean annual temperature by 1 °C. If temperatures warm 2–4 °C over the next century, then marsh productivity may increase by 10–40%, though physiological research suggests that increases in the north could potentially be offset by some decreases in the south. This increase in productivity is roughly equivalent to estimates of marsh lost due to future sea level change. If a warming-induced stimulation of vegetation growth will enhance vertical accretion and limit erosion, then the combined effects of global change may be to increase the total productivity and ecosystem services of tidal wetlands, at least in northern latitudes.  相似文献

Dependent offspring use specialized traits to attract parental care. In birds, this includes morphological ornaments (e.g. colourful plumage or mouthparts) that are associated with nestling condition and shape the allocation of parental care. Ornament expression often differs among broods, even after differences in individual condition are accounted for statistically. Understanding how this variation arises is important for understanding the information content of these signals, their functional importance, and their evolution. The present study used a cross‐fostering experiment to assess the relative contributions of parental effects to among‐brood differences in the mouth coloration of nestling house sparrows, specifically the carotenoid‐richness, overall brightness, and ultraviolet (UV) coloration of rictal flanges. The expression of carotenoid‐based coloration was explained by synchronous breeding, nest‐of‐rearing and nest‐of‐origin. Brightness and relative UV intensity, however, were explained only by synchronous breeding, and there was substantial unexplained variation in all three colour parameters. Among‐brood variation in mouth coloration, then, may primarily contain information about the environment in which offspring are reared. At the individual level, ontogenetic changes in the carotenoid‐richness and brightness of flanges positively reflected mass gain (a proxy for food intake). Larger and yellower chicks gained more mass, consistent with parental preferences for these traits. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 106 , 169–179.  相似文献

The effects of environmental change on fecundity and mortality rates of ancient populations are likely to have influenced extinction patterns and biogeographical range shifts. To test for a relationship between environmental change and palaeodemographical change, the mortality profiles of late Pleistocene muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) from north Florida were compared with recent populations of the same species to assess the effect of the Pleistocene–Holocene transition on the demographics of this species, as well as a potential role in the extirpation of O. zibethicus in Florida during the Pleistocene–Holocene transition. At the older locality (Latvis‐Simpson: approximately 32 14C Ky BP), there is strong sedimentological evidence for late summer or autumn seasonal deposition. Most of the individuals in the youngest cohort were adults approximately 7 or 8 months old at death, suggesting that the breeding season had occurred in the fall or winter. This breeding schedule is similar to recent southern populations where breeding is most intense in the fall and winter, and unlike northern populations where breeding occurs in the spring. The inferred breeding seasonality is consistent with other evidence suggesting that the south‐east was warm and equable in the late Pleistocene. At the younger locality (Sloth Hole: approximately 12 14C Ky BP) muskrats exhibit faster dental wear and lower life expectancy, suggesting harsher conditions near the time of extirpation. Cooler temperatures, aridity, water table fluctuation, and human presence all comprise potential factors leading to a lower life expectancy during this time interval. The fossil record shows a potential for investigating links between climate change and the demographics of palaeopopulations. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 106 , 41–56.  相似文献

Although temperate cave‐adapted fauna may evolve as a result of climatic change, tropical cave dwellers probably colonize caves through adaptive shifts to exploit new resources. The founding populations may have traits that make colonization of underground spaces even more likely. To investigate the process of cave adaptation and the number of times that flightlessness has evolved in a group of reportedly flightless Hawaiian cave moths, we tested the flight ability of 54 Schrankia individuals from seven caves on two islands. Several caves on one island were sampled because separate caves could have been colonized by underground connections after flightlessness had already evolved. A phylogeny based on approximately 1500 bp of mtDNA and nDNA showed that Schrankia howarthi sp. nov. invaded caves on two islands, Maui and Hawaii. Cave‐adapted adults are not consistently flightless but instead are polymorphic for flight ability. Although the new species appears well suited to underground living, some individuals were found living above ground as well. These individuals, which are capable of flight, suggest that this normally cave‐limited species is able to colonize other, geographically separated caves via above‐ground dispersal. This is the first example of an apparently cave‐adapted species that occurs in caves on two separate Hawaiian islands. A revision of the other Hawaiian Schrankia is presented, revealing that Schrankia simplex, Schrankia oxygramma, Schrankia sarothrura, and Schrankia arrhecta are all junior synonyms of Schrankia altivolans. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 156 , 114–139.  相似文献

One key environmental risk associated with the release of novel disease‐resistant plants is the potential for non‐target host populations to acquire resistance genes and undergo enemy release, leading to damage to associated native plant populations in high conservation‐value ecosystems. Unfortunately, the dynamics of most natural pathosystems are poorly understood, and risk assessment of disease‐resistant plants remains a challenge. Here we describe the first stage of a multi‐tiered risk assessment strategy aimed at quantifying potential ecological release in a model pathosystem (the weedy pasture species Trifolium repens infected with Clover yellow vein virus; ClYVV) in order to assess the level of risk posed by genetically modified and conventionally bred disease‐resistant host genotypes to non‐target plant communities in south‐eastern Australia. Glasshouse inoculation and growth experiments using 14 ClYVV isolates and 20 wild T. repens lines collected from high conservation‐value montane grassland and woodland communities show that viral infection reduces the survival and growth of host plants by on average 10–50%. However, T. repens lines exhibited variable levels of resistance and tolerance to virus infection and ClYVV isolates differed in infectivity and aggressiveness, with grassland isolates having a greater pathogenic effect on associated host plants than woodland isolates. We conclude that ClYVV potentially plays an important role in limiting the size of T. repens populations in some at‐risk non‐target ecosystems and that second‐tier field experiments are required to adequately quantify the risk associated with the commercial release of V‐R T. repens genotypes in Australia.  相似文献
