The relative importance of explant type, genotype and growthregulator regime in the determination of shoot regenerationfrequencies from complex explants of Brassica napus L. has beenevaluated. Cotyledon, hypocotyl and stem sections taken fromone spring (Westar) and three winter (Ariana, Cobra, Libravo)varieties of B. napus were cultured on three different growthregulator regimes, 0.5 mg dm–3 NAA + 2.0mg dm–3BAP, 0.5 mg dm–3 NAA + 4.0mg dm–3 BAP and 1.0mgdm–3 NAA + 4.0mg dm–3 BAP. The most significanteffects on shoot regeneration were due to explant type and variety.The regeneration from stem segments was not only two to threetimes higher than from hypocotyls or cotyledons, in all varieties,but the response was also more uniform across the varieties.The explant effect accounted for 44–95% of the regenerationresponse. In contrast, the contribution of growth regulatorregime was negligible. Although the growth regulator regimeas an independent effect was unimportant, regeneration fromboth Ariana and Libravo was significantly affected by the interactionof genotype with growth regulator regime. The importance ofboth the high shoot regeneration frequency from stem segmentsand the relative uniformity of response across the four testedgenotypes is discussed with respect to the potential benefitsof using this explant source in Agrobacterium-based transformationexperiments. An analysis of the brain of Chameleon has given evidence of a number of modifications in the general plan of the reptilian nervous system. The telencephalon shows a reduced olfactory mechanism and suggests the presence of the true motor cortex. The ventral peduncle of the lateral forebrain bundle is unusually large with the majority of its fibres terminating in two new nuclear masses in the hypothalamus, the nucleus entopeduncularis, and a few in the nucleus ruber. A high degree of effective response to optic stimuli is indicated by the extensive correlation between the optic tectum and the nuclear masses of the midbrain and the diencephalon. The wide range of eye movements is probably correlated with the development of the basal optic root ganglion and its numerous secondary connections and the elaborate relationship of the geniculate complex. The usually highly developed tecto-bulbar system is partly replaced by a large tegmento-bulbar system that relays the tectal impulses caudally. An interesting mesencephalic nucleus is a large nucleus profundus mesencephali that receives a great variety of impulses and appears to be an important correlation center. Ascending visceral mechanisms were described bringing the hypothalamus into relationship with the lower centers. The great excursion of the tongue is associated with a highly differentiated hypoglossal nucleus. Components of the medial lemniscus from the spinal cord and the medulla to the vicinity of the thalamus were demonstrated.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Roads can affect the persistence of wildlife populations, through posing mortality risks and acting as barriers. In many countries, transportation agencies attempt to counterbalance these negative impacts. Road mortality is a major threat for European wildcats (Felis silvestris); therefore, we tested the effectiveness of a newly developed wildcat-specific fence in preventing wildcat mortality along a new motorway. We hypothesized that such a fenced motorway would at the same time be a significant barrier to wildcats and may at worst result in 2 isolated populations. We used radiotracking data of 12 wildcats, resulting in 13,000 fixes, to investigate individual movement behavior during and after construction of a new motorway in southwestern Germany. The motorway was fenced with the wildcat-specific fence and included crossing structures, not especially constructed for wildlife. Additionally we collected road kills on stretches of the same motorway with various types of fencing. A rate of 0.4 wildcat kills/km/year on the motorway, which was traveled by 10,000 vehicles/day and fenced with a regular wildlife fence, was reduced by 83% on stretches with wildcat-specific fencing. Of the available crossing structures, wildcats preferred open-span viaducts. Road underpasses were used but hold a mortality risk themselves. As opposed to our expectations, the fenced motorway (fenced with wildcat fence) posed only a moderate barrier to wildcats. Individuals were hindered in their daily routine and some stopped crossing completely but others continued crossing regularly. The adaptation of spatial and temporal behavior to traffic volume and location of crossing structures has an energetic cost. Hence, we suggest that only a small number of major roads can be tolerated within a wildcat's home range. To meet the demands of the European Habitats Directive, we recommend installing the wildcat fence in wildcat core areas along motorways to reduce wildcat mortality. We suggest that fences should incorporate safe crossing structures every 1.5-2.5 km. Our findings in terms of fencing design and crossing structures can be used by transportation agencies for an effective reduction of road mortality and barrier effect for carnivores.  相似文献

Abstract: A review on the Oligocene and Miocene stalked barnacles of the Paratethys Sea is presented. The fauna comprises two lepadiform and eight scalpelliform species. Only two species are known from Oligocene deposits, four are documented from Lower Miocene formations, and another four species occur in the Middle Miocene. Only one Oligocene and one Miocene species occur in two different Paratethyan basins in roughly coeval environments, and only a single Middle Miocene species is also known from the adjacent Mediterranean Sea. This low degree of biogeographical similarity is probably a result from the still low number of publications dealing with this group. Stalked barnacles are often indicating bathyal or at least deep sublittoral environments. Especially, the abundance of the benthic deep‐water lepadiform Poecilasma in evaporitic deposits of the Middle Miocene Badenian Salinity Crisis may serve as new evidence for a deeper marine depositional environment. Scalpellum paratethyianum sp. nov. and Lepas sattmanni sp. nov. are described as new species; Arcoscalpellum renevieri (Mayer and Gümbel in Gümbel, 1861) is introduced as new combination.  相似文献

Three field experiments were made to determine the effectiveness of small-plot trials in detecting differences between potato cultivars/clones in their tolerance of damage by potato cyst-nematodes. A nematicide (aldicarb) was applied at three rates to decrease nematode damage. The largest rate of aldicarb increased tuber yields most but the relationship between yield response and nematicide rate was not linear. The yield increases of the cultivars and clones differed, indicating that they have different degrees of tolerance of potato cyst nematodes. The results were analysed in several ways and the untreated yield as a proportion of the treated provided the best means of expressing and comparing tolerance; but whichever method was used the tolerance rankings of the cultivars and clones were similar. At two sites infested with Globodera rostochiensis, the rankings of the 10 cultivars and clones were similar but at a third site, heavily infested with G. pallida, they were different. Aldicarb decreased the nematode population density after harvest at the G. pallida site but was less effective at the G. rostochiensis sites, which were less heavily infested. Growing resistant or partially resistant potatoes usually prevented nematode increase, and the more resistant cultivars and clones decreased population densities markedly.  相似文献

1. The patterns of multiple paternity among the progeny of females are key properties of genetic mating systems. Female multiple mating should evolve due to direct or indirect benefits, but it may also partly be driven by the encounter rate with different potential mates. 2. In this study this hypothesis was experimentally tested in the European earwig (Forficula auricularia L.) by establishing experimental mating groups that differed in the number of males and females (i.e. density). The number of sires and mean sibling relatedness in each clutch were estimated using microsatellite‐based paternity analysis. 3. As predicted, the mean number of sires per clutch was significantly increased, and sibling relatedness decreased, in the higher density treatment where more potential male mates were available. This change was less than proportional to the number of males in the mating groups, indicating that mechanisms limiting multiple paternity in large mating groups were involved. There were no significant relationships between female reproductive success or male siring success with morphology (body size, weight, and forceps size). 4. The present results show that multiple paternity in F. auricularia clutches is partly determined by the availability of male mates and suggest that this effect is modulated by mechanisms in males and/or females that limit multiple paternity.  相似文献

Reuter, M., Piller, W.E., Harzhauser, M., Kroh, A., Rögl, F. & ?ori?, S. 2010: The Quilon Limestone, Kerala Basin, India: an archive for Miocene Indo‐Pacific seagrass beds. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 76–86. The facies of the fossiliferous Quilon Limestone in SW India is described for the first time in detail at the Padappakkara‐type locality. Facies (fossiliferous, micrite‐rich, bioturbated sediment with intercalated sand pockets) and faunal composition (epiphytic foraminifers, seagrass feeding Smaragdia gastropods, bioimmuration of celleporiform bryozoan colonies) indicate a seagrass environment. The large discoidal archaiasin foraminifer Pseudotaberina malabarica, in particular, is considered as a proxy for seagrass communities. Recent seagrasses have their centre of generic richness in the Indo‐Pacific where they cover wide areas in the tidal and shallow sub‐tidal zones. However, their geological record is only fragmentary and their palaeobiogeographic distribution has a big stratigraphical gap in the Miocene Western Indo‐Pacific region. The described nannoplankton flora and planktonic foraminifers from the Quilon Formation demonstrate that the deposition of the studied seagrass bed occurred in nannoplankton biozone NN3. This timing suggests formation during the closure of the Tethyan Seaway. The Quilon Limestone is thus an early Western Indo‐Pacific seagrass bed and an important step in reconstructing the history of seagrass communities. □Quilon Formation, Pseudotaberina malabarica, seagrass facies, Burdigalian, Indo‐Pacific.  相似文献
