A Comparison Between Melanotic and Amelanotic Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells In Vitro Concerning the Effects of L-Dopa and Oxygen on Cell Cycle

Melanin precursors and free radicals, cytotoxic substances, are produced during melanin synthesis by tyrosinase. We compared these cytotoxic effects of L-dopa and oxygen on the cell cycle of melanotic retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells with amelanotic RPE cells because of the differences of tyrosinase activities between melanotic and amelanotic RPE cells. Flow cytometric DNA analysis of RPE cells exposed to L-dopa (100 μM and 250 μM) were conducted at several oxygen concentrations (20%, 10%, and 5%). The dose-dependent effect of L-dopa to arrest the cell cycle (the S phase) was more pronounced in melanotic than in amelanotic RPE cells, and oxygen caused arrest in the G₁ phase.     

Change in Molecular Size of Cellulose during Regeneration of Cell Wall on Carrot Protoplasts

Protoplasts isolated from carrot cells were cultured in a chemically defined medium. The majority of them regenerated cell wall and underwent cell division. Cellulose synthesis started without a noticeable lag but the rate of deposition was very low during the initial stage. The degree of polymerization of cellulose was determined by viscosity measurement of the nitrated product. The cellulose formed in the early stage of the wall regeneration consisted mainly of low molecular weight glucan chains. Change in the average molecular weight of cellulose was found during the growth cycle of carrot cells in normal suspension culture.     

Seasonal variation in embryonic diapause of the striped ground cricket, Allonemobius fasciatus

ABSTRACT. The incidence and intensity of embryonic diapause in the striped ground cricket, Allonemobius fasciatus DeGeer (Gryllidae), is influenced by the date of oviposition and the incubation temperature. At 20C, embryos develop normally until the end of the appendage-formation stage when diapause occurs. The intensity of 'winter' diapause at this stage is greatest in eggs laid early in the season. Incubation at higher temperature induces a different and earlier 'summer' diapause. The higher the temperature the earlier the stage at which this developmental suppression is imposed. At 27 and 30C, some individuals develop without any interruption and hatch within 20 days. The proportion of these fast-developing eggs is low in summer but increases towards the end of the laying season. In nature, this species is univoltine and precocious hatching before winter is unlikely.
When embryos diapausing at an early stage at 27C are transferred to low temperatures, they resume development and enter winter diapause. The time required to reach the winter-diapause stage after transfer is inversely related to the temperature (30-30C). At 30C, sunmer diapause is neither induced nor maintained.     

Evolutionary Relationship between Diapause and Cold Hardiness in the House Spider,Achaearanea tepidariorum (Araneae: Theridiidae)

The relationship between diapause and cold hardiness of the house spider, Achaearanea tepidariorum, differed geographically. In a cool-temperate population, enhanced chilling tolerance and supercooling ability were observed in diapause individuals, whereas a subtropical population showed only chilling tolerance. Because this spider is considered to be of tropical origin, it would follow that the ancestral diapause of this spider was equipped with chilling tolerance, but not with an increased supercooling ability. It seems that the ability to lower the supercooling point evolved through natural selection in the course of expansion of this species to the northern climates. Copyright 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd. A new species of Pulvinaria (Homoptera: Coccidae) and a new locality record of Pulvinaria neocellulosa

A new soft scale insect of the tribe Pulvinariini, Pulvinaria hakonensis sp. nov., is described from Japan based on several adult females. The lectotype of Pulvinaria neocellulosa Takahashi, 1940 is designated and the species is redescribed and recorded from Japan for the first time.     

一亚热带蜚蠊(Periplaneta japanna)两地理种群间相异的光周期反应模式

为弄清光周期对一种亚热带蜚蠊(Periplaneta japanna)若虫发育的控制机理,检测了光周期对冲绳(26°N)和八丈岛(33°N)两个地理种群若虫发育的影响。结果表明,光周期显著影响两地理种群的若虫发育,然而,冲绳和八丈岛种群间显示不同的光周期反应模式。冲绳种群在长日条件下(LD16∶8h)若虫发育显著快于中间日长(LD14∶10h)和短日条件下(LD12∶12h)的若虫发育,孵化后60d或120d将若虫自LD16∶8h向LD12∶12h转移,若虫发育受到抑制,而自LD12∶12h向LD16∶8h转移,则促进若虫发育。八丈岛种群的若虫在短日条件下发育最快,其次是中间日长,长日条件下若虫发育最慢,孵化后60d或120d将若虫自LD16∶8h向LD12∶12h转移抑制若虫发育,反方向转移的若虫快速发育。两地理种群间不同的光周期反应模式可以认为是趋异进化的结果。     

Electrophoretic variants of serum transferrin in wild pig populations of Japan

Variants of serum transferrin in Japanese wild pig, Sus scrofa leucomystax, and Ryukyu wild pig, S.s. riukiuanus, of Japan were investigated by using starch gel electrophoresis. Five phenotypes, TfB, BC, C, CX and X, were observed, of which two, TfCX and X, are new variants. Comparison of gene frequency estimates which were calculated for each population showed remarkable geographic differences among several populations of these two subspecies.
