Respiratory pathways in aged soybean seeds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Respiratory activities in soybean seeds (Glvcine max (L.) Merr. cv. Chippewa 64) have been examined in the first minutes after water imbibition and after three hours of imbibition, using either particles or intact axes. Cyanide and azide were utilized as inhibitors of the cytochrome oxidase pathway of respiration, and SHAM inhibitions were interpreted as effects on the alternative pathway, since in unaged axes inhibitions by SHAM were obtained only when respiratory activity had either been restricted with inhibitors of the cytochrome oxidase pathway or expanded by an uncoupler (CCCP). From the experiments with these inhibitors, it is suggested that unaged seeds utilize both respiration pathways in the cotyledon but only the cytochrome pathway in the axis. Accelerated aging causes a marked deterioration of respiration, especially that through the cytochrome pathway, and there is an associated engagement of the alternative pathway in the seed axis. It is suggested that the lowering of respiratory activity and the shift in respiratory pathways may play a major role in the decline of germinability and vigor.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Field experiments were conducted to examine the impact of grazing invertebrates on periphyton biomass in twenty-one pools across three northern California coastal streams (U.S.A.): Big Sulphur Creek, the Rice Fork of the Eel River, and Big Canyon Creek. Periphyton accrual on artificial substrate tiles was compared in each stream between two treatments: those elevated slightly above the stream bottom to reduce access by grazers (= platforms) and those placed directly on the stream bottom to allow access by grazers (=controls).
2. Crawling invertebrate grazers (cased caddisflies and snails) were numerically dominant in each stream (86% of all grazers in Big Sulphur Creek, 61% in the Rice Fork, 84% in Big Canyon Creek). Platforms effectively excluded crawling grazers, but were less effective in excluding swimming mayfly grazers (Baetidae).
3. Periphyton biomass (as AFDM) on tiles was significantly lower on controls compared to platforms for the Rice Fork, an open-canopy stream, and Big Sulphur Creek, a stream with a heterogeneous canopy. In contrast, no grazer impact was found for Big Canyon Creek, a densely shaded stream. Here, extremely low periphyton biomass occurred for both treatments throughout the 60 day study.
4. The influence of riparian canopy on periphyton growth (i.e. accrual on platforms), grazer impact on periphyton, and grazer abundance was examined for Big Sulphur Creek. As canopy increased (15–98% cover), periphyton biomass on platforms decreased. In contrast, canopy had little influence on periphyton accrual on controls; apparently, grazers could maintain low periphyton standing crops across the full range of canopy levels. The abundance of one grazer species, the caddisfly Gumaga nigricula , was highest in open, sunlit stream pools; abundance of two other prominent grazers, Helicopsyche borealis (Trichoptera) and Centroptilum convexum (Ephemeroptera), however, was unrelated to canopy.  相似文献

Cabbage whitefly, Aleyrodes proletella , was found for the first time in Australia in January 1997. It was found on Brassica oleracea gp Capitata, Sonchus oleraceus and Euphorbia peplus in South Australia at McLaren Vale, Adelaide, Virginia and Renmark, and in Victoria at Red Cliffs.  相似文献

Although predation of individual social insect workers has little effect on colony fitness, nest predation may be a significant selective agent because it can result in substantial loss of reproductive success. Surprisingly, the consequences of predation on social insect nests are poorly understood. In the present study, we investigate the factors that correlate with the probability of predation by echidnas, Tachyglossus aculeatus , on nests and colonies of the facultatively polydomous meat ant, Iridomyrmex purpureus. In particular, we investigate whether colony fragmentation provides a mechanism for reducing the costs of echidna predation. Over 2 years, 138 of the 140 colonies on our study site were depredated. Nest predation was most common in woodlands but with no obvious seasonal patterns. The probability of nest predation was positively correlated with the size of the nest, and negatively correlated with the density of surrounding nests. Although polydomous colonies are at a similar risk of predation by echidnas, the proportion of depredated nests is negatively correlated with the number of nests; thus, the probability that one or more nests avoid predation is increased with increasing nest numbers.
