Scabiosa caucasica has been found affected by a new species of Aphelenchoides , herein described and named A. blastophthorus. The symptoms of disease are destruction of the inflorescences and distortion of the leaves with reduction of the laminae. Similar symptoms were produced in scabious by experimental infestation. The nematode can infest teazle ( Dipsacus fullonum ), but has not been found naturally occurring on any host but scabious.  相似文献

This paper deals with the anatomy of two- and three-ovulatecone scales which are found occasionally in the cones of A.Bidwillii. The manner in which each ovule receives its vascularsupply from bundles lateral to the ovule is discussed, togetherwith a hypothetically primitive type of araucarian cone scalewith three ovules possibly resembling the fossil Schizolepis.The interpretation of the vascular system of the scales as givenin this paper is a correction of that presented in the firstpaper of this series by the same authors.  相似文献

When grown in an atmosphere saturated with tetrachloronitrobenzene (TCNB) vapour, Botrytis cinerea showed retarded germination and colony growth and its sporulation was completely suppressed. Retardation of growth was greater on dilute or acidified media and at lower temperatures.
Similar effects were shown by Bhizoctonia solani, Phytophthora parasitica, Mucor hiemalis and Trichoderma viride but none of these was as sensitive as Botrytis cinerea , especially as regards linear growth. Of two strains of Fusarium caeruleum , one was much more sensitive than the other, both in linear growth and sporulation. Pythium deBaryanum was unaffected in its growth rate.
TCNB, as a growth repressant, is fungistatic without being fungicidal.
With fungi which are sensitive, tetrachloronitrobenzene was more effective than the penta-derivative, except for Trichoderma viride where the converse applied.  相似文献

Here we present a phylogeny of beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera) based on DNA sequence data from eight nuclear genes, including six single‐copy nuclear protein‐coding genes, for 367 species representing 172 of 183 extant families. Our results refine existing knowledge of relationships among major groups of beetles. Strepsiptera was confirmed as sister to Coleoptera and each of the suborders of Coleoptera was recovered as monophyletic. Interrelationships among the suborders, namely Polyphaga (Adephaga (Archostemata, Myxophaga)), in our study differ from previous studies. Adephaga comprised two clades corresponding to Hydradephaga and Geadephaga. The series and superfamilies of Polyphaga were mostly monophyletic. The traditional Cucujoidea were recovered in three distantly related clades. Lymexyloidea was recovered within Tenebrionoidea. Several of the series and superfamilies of Polyphaga received moderate to maximal clade support in most analyses, for example Buprestoidea, Chrysomeloidea, Coccinelloidea, Cucujiformia, Curculionoidea, Dascilloidea, Elateroidea, Histeroidea and Hydrophiloidea. However, many of the relationships within Polyphaga lacked compatible resolution under maximum‐likelihood and Bayesian inference, and/or lacked consistently strong nodal support. Overall, we recovered slightly younger estimated divergence times than previous studies for most groups of beetles. The ordinal split between Coleoptera and Strepsiptera was estimated to have occurred in the Early Permian. Crown Coleoptera appeared in the Late Permian, and only one or two lineages survived the end‐Permian mass extinction, with stem group representatives of all four suborders appearing by the end of the Triassic. The basal split in Polyphaga was estimated to have occurred in the Triassic, with the stem groups of most series and superfamilies originating during the Triassic or Jurassic. Most extant families of beetles were estimated to have Cretaceous origins. Overall, Coleoptera experienced an increase in diversification rate compared to the rest of Neuropteroidea. Furthermore, 10 family‐level clades, all in suborder Polyphaga, were identified as having experienced significant increases in diversification rate. These include most beetle species with phytophagous habits, but also several groups not typically or primarily associated with plants. Most of these groups originated in the Cretaceous, which is also when a majority of the most species‐rich beetle families first appeared. An additional 12 clades showed evidence for significant decreases in diversification rate. These clades are species‐poor in the Modern fauna, but collectively exhibit diverse trophic habits. The apparent success of beetles, as measured by species numbers, may result from their associations with widespread and diverse substrates – especially plants, but also including fungi, wood and leaf litter – but what facilitated these associations in the first place or has allowed these associations to flourish likely varies within and between lineages. Our results provide a uniquely well‐resolved temporal and phylogenetic framework for studying patterns of innovation and diversification in Coleoptera, and a foundation for further sampling and resolution of the beetle tree of life.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the sexual stages of Plasmodium gallinaceum during gametogenesis, fertilization, and early zygote transformation is described. New observations are made regarding the parasitophorous vacuole (PV) of gametocytes and the process of emergence in male and female gametocytes. Whereas female gametocytes readily disrupted both the PV membrane and host cell plasmalemma during emergence, male gametocytes frequently failed to break down the plasmalemma of the host cell. New observations and hypotheses are presented on the behavior of the male gamete nucleus. Following fertilization, the male nucleus appears to travel through a channel of endoplasmic reticulum in the female gamete before fusing with the female nucleus at a region in which the nuclear envelope is thrown into extensive convoluted folds. Polarization of the zygote nucleus, in association with the appearance of a perinuclear spindle of cytoplasmic microtubules, preceded all other changes in the developing zygote. After nuclear polarization becomes apparent, electron-dense material is deposited beneath the zygote pellicle, and a canopy is formed which eventually extends over the entire apical end of the developing ookinete. As the apical end begins to extend outward, polar rings, micronemes, and subpellicular microtubules become visible in this portion and a “virus-like” inclusion known as a crystalloid is formed in the posterior portion of the zygote. When female gametes are prevented from being fertilized, the cytoplasm at 24 h after gametogenesis is devoid of most of those organelles found in the developing zygote or the mature ookinete. The cell is surrounded only by a single membrane. Although at various points beneath the membrane there are deposits of electron-dense material reminiscent of those deposited in the zygote, no further development of ookinete structures takes place in the unfertilized female gamete.  相似文献

1. The relative importance of contemporary and historical processes is a fundamental question in understanding patterns of biodiversity. We tested the hypothesis that species‐sorting into different habitats (limnocrenes, rheocrenes, helocrenes), rather than history, would account for the greatest variation in macroinvertebrate diversity in desert artesian springs of The Bonneville Basin, U.S.A. These springs were isolated at the valley scale c. 9000 years ago by aridity and high salinity. Thus, the valley scale will account for the greatest variation in community composition if history and dispersal limitation are important, whereas niche‐based sorting processes will be most important if habitat accounts for the greatest variation in community composition. 2. We identified 302 taxa from 280 sites and used a partial redundancy analysis, additive partitioning and classification strength (CS) to partition the variability in diversity among the springs. The valley scale accounted for more variation in community composition in limnocrene habitats (32.5%) than all other spatial and environmental variables combined. Valleys also accounted for 58% (additive partitioning) and 83% (CS) of the regional variation in diversity in analyses that included all three habitat types. That is, the average community similarity was 25% across the region, but increased to 41% within valleys. By contrast, habitat filtering did not account for significant variation in community composition in any of the analyses. Our study is one of the few suggesting the over‐riding importance of neutral processes in determining patterns of diversity (history and dispersal limitation). 3. The ‘expansion’ hypothesis suggests that the youthful age of a region, combined with slow dispersal by a fauna dominated by generalists, will maximise the imprint of history. These communities appear to exist in a pre‐equilibrial state, where the maximum carrying capacity has not been reached and niche space is plentiful. With time, we predict that local richness will increase while β‐diversity decreases as species expand their distribution across the region. Consequently, the importance of niche‐based processes may increase with time as the imprint of history fades.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The association of the sepiolid squid Euprymna scolopeswith its marine luminous bacterial symbiont Vibrio fischeriis an emerging model system to study the initiation and developmentof bacterial symbioses in higher animals, in particular theinfluence of bacteria on the ontogenic development of symbiotic-specifichost tissues. Experiments comparing the development of juvenilesquid infected with symbiotic V. fischeri with that of uninfectedjuveniles suggest postembryonic development of the light organrequires cell-cell interactions with the bacterial symbionts.The presence of symbiotic bacteria induces specific morphologicalchanges by affecting such fundamental processes as cell deathand cell differentiation. The surface of the juvenile organis largely composed of ciliated cells that appear to facilitateinfection of the light organ. These cells begin to undergo celldeath within hours of infection with symbiotic V. fischeri.Within three days the epithelial cells that form the bacteriacontainingcrypts of the light organ increase in size; these cells do notappear mitotically active, and may represent a terminally differentiatedstate. The light organs of uninfected juvenile E. scolopes,however, do not exhibit any of these early postembryonic developmentalevents but remain in a state of arrested morphogenesis.  相似文献

The cytoskeleton of Toxoplasma gondii was studied by electron microscopy using 1) whole mounts of detergent-extracted parasites and 2) thin sections of routine preparations, tannic acid-stained organisms, and detergent-extracted parasites. In whole mounts, the spiral arrangement of the 22 pellicular microtubules closely corresponded to the pattern of surface ridges seen previously by scanning electron microscopy and reflected the torsion of the parasite body during locomotion. The microtubules had free posterior ends and were anchored anteriorly in the polar ring, presumed to be a microtubule organizing center (MTOC). The insertions of the microtubules were supported by blunt projections of the polar ring, forming a cogwheel pattern in transverse view. The internal microtubules had 13 protofilaments and were twice the length of the conoid. They extended through the conoid and ended at the anterior preconoidal ring, presumably a second MTOC. The subunits of the conoid were arranged in a counterclockwise spiral when traced from base to tip, as were the pellicular microtubules. We postulate that as the conoid moves, the polar ring complex moves along the spiral pathway of the conoid subunits. Retraction of the conoid would then rotate the polar ring, producing the torsion of the body we observed by SEM.  相似文献
