Fruit and leaf shoot of litchi (Litchi chinensis) infestation by naturally occurring populations of the fruit bprer, Conopomorpha sinensis larvae and C. sinensis parasitization rates were determined in litchi orchards in northern Thailand at high (ca. 1 400 m ASL) and low (ca. 800 m ASL) elevations with different, non-overlapping fruiting seasons. In addition, spray applications of Bacillus thuringiensis var. aizawai, the natural compound spinosad and the chemical pesticide imidacloprid were conducted in the field to test the effects of these agents on C. sinensis fruit infestation rate. Fruit infestation rate and fruit growth, studied in a low elevation orchard, were sigmoidal and showed a highly significant positive correlation (P ≤ 0.01). Leaf shoot infestation rate in the low elevation orchard decreased in the course of the fruiting season (March until May), but increased in the high elevation orchard, where no fruits were present within the same period of time. Together, these results indicate that females of C. sinensis clearly prefer fruits over shoots for oviposition. If no fruits are available, which was the case in the high elevation orchard during that time, they are constrained to lay their eggs on shoots. The parasitization rate of C. sinensis larvae in untreated fruits was 54.3%. The parasitoid species were Chelonus chailini (90.8%) and Phanerotoma sp. (9.2%). In the leaf shoots, C. sinensis was found to be parasitized by Phanerotoma sp. and Apanteles briareus. The applications of the different active agents had no significant effect on C. sinensis fruit infestation compared to the untreated control. Besides the cryptic life of the larvae, this is most probably explained by the fact that C. sinensis has several generations during the fruiting season. Because of the high parasitization rates recorded, an alternative and more effective control measure than the application of pesticides might be the augmentative release of parasitoids.  相似文献

In understanding how visual signals function, quantifying the components of those patterns is vital. With the ever-increasing power and availability of digital photography, many studies are utilizing this technique to study the content of animal colour signals. Digital photography has many advantages over other techniques, such as spectrometry, for measuring chromatic information, particularly in terms of the speed of data acquisition and its relatively cheap cost. Not only do digital photographs provide a method of quantifying the chromatic and achromatic content of spatially complex markings, but also they can be incorporated into powerful models of animal vision. Unfortunately, many studies utilizing digital photography appear to be unaware of several crucial issues involved in the acquisition of images, notably the nonlinearity of many cameras' responses to light intensity, and biases in a camera's processing of the images towards particular wavebands. In the present study, we set out step-by-step guidelines for the use of digital photography to obtain accurate data, either independent of any particular visual system (such as reflection values), or for particular models of nonhuman visual processing (such as that of a passerine bird). These guidelines include how to: (1) linearize the camera's response to changes in light intensity; (2) equalize the different colour channels to obtain reflectance information; and (3) produce a mapping from camera colour space to that of another colour space (such as photon catches for the cone types of a specific animal species).  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 90 , 211–237.  相似文献

We tested for genetic differentiation between populations of Rhagoletis alternata Fall. (Diptera: Tephritidae) on three different host species. We collected larvae from three rose species of the section Caninae ( Rosa canina L., Rosa corymbifera Borkh . , and Rosa rubiginosa L.) from 15 sites across Germany, where the three roses occurred together. Additionally, we sampled three sites in Switzerland. Roses differ in morphology (e.g. leaf glands) as well as phenology. We were able to score nine allozyme loci (five polymorphic). Populations from the three hosts did not differ in genetic variability. We found significant genetic differentiation between populations from different host species. However, the differentiation was very low (0.9%). Hence, we found no indication for host races. Furthermore, surprisingly little geographical structure of genetic differentiation was found between populations of this fruit fly across central Europe. We offer three mutually non-exclusive explanations for these findings. First, gene flow between populations of Rh. alternata is high. Second, the pattern of genetic differentiation is based on a recent expansion of the distributional range . 1. We studied the diet of the invasive round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) on a diel basis in the Flint River, a warmwater stream in Michigan, U.S.A. Diet and available prey samples were collected seven times over a 24 h period in four consecutive months. The section of river studied lacked zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha), the primary prey of adult round gobies elsewhere in the Great Lakes region. 2. Diet changed on a diel basis with hydropsychid caddisfly and chironomid larvae predominating during the day, chironomid pupae dominating in the evening and heptageniid mayflies dominating at night. Simultaneous study of macroinvertebrate drift suggested that caddisfly and chironomid larvae were most likely picked from submerged rocks, chironomid pupae were most likely taken during their emergent ascent and mayflies were either captured from the drift or picked from rocks. 3. The Flint River lacks a diverse darter (Family: Percidae) and sculpin (Family: Cottidae) fauna and it appears that the round goby has occupied a generalised darter/sculpin niche. Our results indicate that round gobies have the potential to invade successfully riverine systems, particularly those lacking a diverse benthic fish assemblage.  相似文献

Most tropical regions are facing historical difficulties of generating biologically reconstructed long‐term climate records. Dendrochronology (tree‐ring studies) is a powerful tool to develop high‐resolution and exactly dated proxies for climate reconstruction. Owing to the seasonal variation in rainfall we expected the formation of annual tree rings in the wood of tropical West African tree species. In the central‐western part of Benin (upper Ouémé catchment, UOC) and in northeastern Ivory Coast (Comoé National Park, CNP) we investigated the relationship between climate (precipitation, sea surface temperature (SST)) and tree rings and show their potential for climate reconstruction. Wood samples of almost 200 trees belonging to six species in the UOC and CNP served to develop climate‐sensitive ring‐width chronologies using standard dendrochronological techniques. The relationship between local precipitation, monthly SST anomalies in the Gulf of Guinea, El Niño‐ Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and ring‐width indices was performed by simple regression analyses, two sample tests and cross‐spectral analysis. A low‐pass filter was used to highlight the decadal variability in rainfall of the UOC site. All tree species showed significant relationships with annual precipitation proving the existence of annual tree rings. ENSO signals could not be detected in the ring‐width patterns. For legume tree species at the UOC site significant relationships could be found between SST anomalies in the Gulf of Guinea indicating correlations at periods of 5.1–4.1 and 2.3 years. Our findings accurately show the relationship between tree growth, local precipitation and SST anomalies in the Gulf of Guinea possibly associated with worldwide SST patterns. A master chronology enabled the reconstruction of the annual precipitation in the UOC to the year 1840. Time series analysis suggest increasing arid conditions during the last 160 years which may have large impacts on the hydrological cycles and consequently on the ecosystem dynamics and the development of socio‐economic cultures and sectors in the Guinea‐Congolian/Sudanian region.  相似文献

Patterns of violence and the type and distribution of resulting injuries are highly culturally specific. In this study, skeletal data from a historic cemetery (St. Martin's, England) are combined with contemporary sources and modern clinical data to enable the patterning of violence-related injuries to be interpreted. Particular consideration was given to the possibility of a relationship between commonly occurring types of violence and those that are popular in sport. Phillip Walker (1997) suggested that the growth of fist fighting in the early-20th-century United States was stimulated by the rising popularity of boxing. At St. Martin's, a pattern of injuries consistent with fighting in a style specific to boxing is evident, suggesting that developing boxing styles were influential in 18th- and 19th-century Britain as the accepted way of settling interpersonal disputes. This research underlines the importance of interpreting skeletal data in their specific cultural context to gain the maximum information on patterns of behavior.  相似文献

Solution culture experiments with spring wheat (Triticum aestivumcv. Neepawa) showed that the critical phosphorus concentrationin the shoot (CPC) was lower when root temperatures were optimalfor growth. Root temperatures of 10, 15, 20 and 25°C wereused, the optimal was 25°C. The plants were sampled at definedstages, either at 4·0 g fr. wt. or with 6 mature leavesand the phosphorus (P) status of the plants at the samplingtime was evaluated by observing the responses of other plantsto an additional supply of P. These two precautions were criticalto the interpretation of the data and may explain the discrepancyin the literature about the relationship between plant growthrate and the CPC. The effects of sulphite ion () and sulphate ion () on both the activation and the catalytic activities of ribulose- 1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase (EC 4.1.1.39 [EC] )were studied and compared to those of other effectors of theenzyme, particularly inorganic phosphate (P1). The activationby CO2 and Mg2+ of a slow activating form of the carboxylasein the presence of the two anions produced high specific activitieswith significant lower concentrations of CO2 than normally required.This was due to stabilization of the ternary complex betweenthe enzyme, CO2 and Mg2+. With a rapidly activating speciesof enzyme, and caused only a small increase in activation with subsaturating CO2. , and P1, with saturatingconcentrations of CO2 also enhanced the catalytic activity abovethat achieved with CO2 and Mg2+ alone; P1 was the most effectiveof the anions, producing a 50% increase in the specific activity,both with the slow and rapidly activating species. and were potent inhibitors of the carboxylase and oxygenase reactions of the enzyme. was a non-competitive inhibitor with respect to CO2, and competitive/mixedwith respect to ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate. The time courseof the carboxylase and oxygenase reactions in the presence of were biphasic with inhibition apparent only in the second phase.
