1. Birds are considered to be the primary selective agents for warning colouration in butterflies, and select for aposematic mimicry by learning to avoid brightly coloured prey after unpleasant experiences. It has long been thought that bright colouration plays an important role in promoting the avoidance of distasteful prey by birds. 2. The hypothesis that warning colouration facilitates memorability and promotes predator avoidance was tested by means of a field experiment using distasteful model butterflies. Artificial butterflies with a Heliconius colour pattern unknown to local birds were generated using bird vision models, either coloured or achromatic, and hung in tree branches in a tropical forest. Two sequential trials were conducted at each site to test avoidance by naïve and experienced predators. 3. There was a significant reduction in predation in the second trial. Also, coloured models were attacked less than achromatic models. Specifically, coloured butterflies were attacked significantly less in the second trial, but there was no significant decrease in predation on achromatic models. 4. The present results imply an important role for colour in enhancing aversion of aposematic butterflies. It has also been demonstrated that previous experience of distasteful prey can lead to enhanced avoidance in subsequent trials, supporting mimicry theory. 相似文献

Experiments are reported on the spatial distributions of isotopiccarbon within the mesophyll of detached leaves of the C3 plantVicia faba L. fed 14CO2 at different light intensities. Eachleaf was isolated in a cuvette and ten artificial stomata providedspatial continuity between the ambient atmosphere (0.030.05%v/v CO2) and the mesophyll from the abaxial leaf side. Paradermalleaf layers exhibited spatial profiles of radioactivity whichvaried with the intensity of incident light in 2 min exposures.At low light, when biochemical kinetics should limit CO2 uptake,sections through palisade cells contained most radioactivity.As the light intensity was increased to approximately 20% offull sunlight, peak radioactivity was observed in the spongycells near the geometric mid-plane of the mesophyll. The resultsindicate that diffusion of carbon dioxide within the mesophyllregulated the relative photosynthetic activity of the palisadeand spongy cells at incident photosynthetically active lightintensities as little as 110 µE m2 s1 whenCO2 entered only through the lower leaf surface. European field experiments have demonstrated Miscanthus can produce some of the highest energy yields per hectare of all potential energy crops. Previous modelling studies using MISCANMOD have calculated the potential energy yield for the EU27 from mean historical climate data (1960–1990). In this paper, we have built on the previous studies by further developing a new Miscanthus crop growth model MISCANFOR in order to analyse (i) interannual variation in yields for past and future climates, (ii) genotype-specific parameters on yield in Europe. Under recent climatic conditions (1960–1990) we show that 10% of arable land could produce 1709 PJ and mitigate 30 Tg of carbon dioxide-carbon (CO2 -C) equivalent greenhouse gasses (GHGs) compared with EU27 primary energy consumption of 65 598 PJ, emitting 1048 Tg of CO2 -C equivalent GHGs in 2005. If we continue to use the clone Miscanthus × giganteus , MISCANFOR shows that, as climate change reduces in-season water availability, energy production and carbon mitigation could fall 80% by 2080 for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change A2 scenario. However, because Miscanthus is found in a huge range of climates in Asia, we propose that new hybrids will incorporate genes conferring superior drought and frost tolerance. Using parameters from characterized germplasm, we calculate energy production could increase from present levels by 88% (to 2360 PJ) and mitigate 42 Tg of CO2 -C equivalent using 10% arable land for the 2080 mid-range A2 scenario.
