It was found that stomata on illuminated leaves, both of Pelargoniumand wheat, opened much wider where the leaf surface was enclosedin a small volume of air, as in a normal porometer cup, thanelsewhere. This was shown for both species by the infiltrationmethod, and for Pelargonium by Lloyd's method and direct microscopicalobservation also. The effect was shown not to be due to pressure of the porometercup or glass plate on the leaf, or to temperature differences,nor directly to the lack of movement or high humidity of theenclosed air. A considerable body of data was collected which appeared tosupport the hypothesis that the wide opening was due to accumulationof some volatile substance produced by the leaf, but all theresults were also consistent with the view that it was causedby reduction in the carbon dioxide content of the enclosed airbelow the normal 0·03 per cent. owing to photosynthesis.Further crucial experiments with both the porometer and infiltrationmethods left virtually no doubt that the latter hypothesis wascorrect. This extreme sensitivity of stomata to carbon dioxide concentrationwithin the range 0·03 per cent. to zero is discussedin relation to their operation in nature, and a possible biologicaladvantage is suggested. The bearing of the effect upon porometer investigations is alsodiscussed and it is concluded that for all quantitative or semi-quantitativeexperimentation it is essential to use a cup detached betweenreadings, or at least swept with air such as surrounds the restof the leaf, and to have the upper leaf surface above the cuparea freely exposed or similarly swept. For qualitative investigationof the light response of stomata the traditional form of cupmay be used. The importance is stressed of allowing porometer readings toreach equilibrium under one set of conditions before changingto another, when investigating the ‘closing’ or‘opening’ effects of external factors. Several subsidiary effects, observed in the course of the investigation,are discussed; in particular an effect of humidity upon therate of response to other factors.  相似文献

At temperatures above about 17° C. inflorescence initiationin growing onion plants, as in stored sets, is suppressed whetherthe plants are kept in long or short days. Independently ofcurrent day-length and of previous day-length treatment, ifthe plants are sufficiently large initiation begins very shortlyafter the temperature falls below c. 15° C. Emerged infiorescencesappear some ten or so weeks later. Small plants are unable toinitiate inflores cences under any of the conditions tested,and actual size (perhaps leaf area) rather than leaf or nodenumber seems to be the important factor. Inflorescence emergenceis suppressed at high temperatures in short days or long days;in long days bulb formation also suppresses emergence at lowertemperatures. In long days at temperatures sufficiently lowfor bulbing to be delayed, however, emergence is accelerated.Plants which have produced bulbs in long days in the summershow a delay of inflorescence emergence in the following winter.  相似文献

An apparatus is described enabling light responses of wheatstomata to be followed by periodical porometer readings, betweenwhich the substomatal cavities can be swept with carbon dioxide-freeair forced in through the stomata. This is held to eliminatethe influence of changes in the carbon dioxide content of theintercellular space atmosphere brought about by photosynthesisand respiration in the mesophyll. Using this apparatus in anexperiment of ‘Latin square’ design with 6-foldreplication of three light treatments, a statistically significantresponse to light was found in a leaf area subjected to varyinglight intensities from 90 to 800 f.c. This response was reflectedin a similar significant effect, though of smaller magnitude,occurring in a similarly swept ‘control’ area 2cm. distant and maintained at a constant light intensity of270 f.c, the intervening portion of leaf being illuminated with800 f.c. throughout. It is argued that this transmission ofa light effect from one area to another does not occur via theintercellular spaces, nor by means of carbon dioxide gradientsfrom cell to cell. It is concluded from the data that thereis an indirect effect of light and perhaps also a direct effectupon the guard cells themselves; it is probable that neitherof the two effects concerned operates by reduction of the internalcarbon dioxide content in the guard cells.  相似文献

The shelly fauna of the lowest part of the Sælabonn Formation in the Hadeland district of the Oslo Region provides a rare insight into the shallow-water biota of the earliest Silurian and hence the start of biotic recovery after the end Ordovician extinction event. It is dominated by the brachiopods Dalmanella cf. pectinoides Bergström, Coolinia cf. columbana (Reed), Leptaena cf. haverfordensis Bancroft and Zygospiraella scotica (Salter) together with the trilobite Acernaspis elliptifrons (Esmark). The first three species in this unique association belong to eurytopic Ordovician survivor genera which were also present in the underlying unit in Hadeland and continued to thrive during the Silurian. Significantly, Zygospiraella and Acernaspis have no unequivocal Ordovician record but diversified rapidly and became common during the early Silurian (Rhuddanian) in many parts of the world. Moreover, Acernaspis and Zygospiraella were highly eurytopic, pioneer taxa that were among the first elements of the Rhuddanian shelly fauna to appear in many parts of the world especially around the margins of the remnant Iapetus Ocean, following the drowning of areas previously emergent during the late Ordovician sea-level lowstand. The Hadeland fauna provides evidence of a previously undocumented route (among several) by which life ultimately returned to the global diversity plateau established in the mid-Ordovician.  相似文献

1. Paramecium caudatum is sensitized to heat by sublethal dosages of x-rays. Thus if paramecia are irradiated, then exposed to a sublethal dosage of heat they are killed, but if the same heat exposure precedes the same dosage of radiations, they are not. 2. Sensitivity to both heat and x-rays is much greater in paramecia from the log growth phase than in those from the stationary phase of a culture. 3. Recovery from heat sensitization in animals from the stationary phase of a culture is slow, requiring several days. 4. Division is readily retarded and even temporarily inhibited by sublethal dosage of x-rays. Recovery of the division rate is fairly slow requiring several days. 5. Paramecia can be killed by a dosage of 1,200,000 r (of which about one-half reach the animal) units of x-radiation alone. Smaller dosages are not lethal if the paramecia are transferred to fresh medium immediately upon completion of irradiation. 6. The possibility of utilization of heat sensitization in treatment of malignant growths is discussed.  相似文献

Among the abundant plant microfossils obtained from the late Silurian Burgsvik Sandstone are spores and filaments whose morphology suggests a fungal origin. These include large multiseptate spores resembling conidia of present-day Fungi Imperfecti; ovate, reniform, rugulately ornamented unicellular spores; branched filaments with perforate septa; and filaments with flask-shaped appendages resembling phialides. We suggest that these microfossils represent the remains of the imperfect stages of terrestrial Ascomycetes, and provide evidence for an origin of this group at least contemporaneous with the earliest land plants. Larger, ovoid and cylindrical heterogeneous bodies composed of hyphal fragments resemble the fecal pellets of mycophagous microarthropods. The implications of these in terms of early terrestrial ecosystems are discussed.  相似文献
