This work demonstrates the significant differences in ethanol production of two henequen (Agave fourcroydes Lem) varieties. Yaax ki, or green henequen, surpasses Sac ki, or white henequen, in weight, sugar accumulation capability and ethanol production. The study was carried out with the ‘piña’ (stem and basal part of the leaves that remain attached to it after harvesting the leaves) of 5‐ and 9‐year‐old plants, cultivated in two localities of Yucatán, México. At 5 years of age, Yaax ki piñas are 33% larger than those of Sac ki, and at 9 years this difference can increase to 59%. Juice from 5‐year‐old piñas of Yaax ki contains 15.6% more reducing sugars, whereas in the must it can exceed 67%. Values obtained in the 9‐year‐old plants indicate that the Yaax ki variety accumulates 30.6% more reducing sugars than the Sac ki, whereas in the must the difference is in favor of Yaax ki is 21.7%. To produce 1 L of ethanol at 40% concentration by volume from 5‐year‐old plants, 48 kg of Sac ki piñas and 29 kg of Yaax ki are required, whereas with the 9‐year‐old plants, only 23 and 19 kg are needed, respectively.  相似文献

1. Specialisation in dispersal by alate aphids often imposes constraints on other functions, particularly a reduction in fecundity due to wing development. Short‐distance flight from patches of high population density to uninfested plants may provide temporary predator‐free space, compensating for low fecundity. However, this theoretical prediction has not been explored experimentally. 2. To test this hypothesis, a field cage experiment was conducted in which Aphis glycines populations initiated with controlled proportions of apterous and alate individuals were exposed to predation, while predator‐free space was accessible only through flight. It was predicted that an investment in alate individuals would benefit a population under predation, regardless of associated costs to fecundity. 3. As expected, a strong trade‐off was observed between fecundity and wing development. However, populations initiated with a fixed proportion of alate and apterous individuals showed no reductions in final population size compared with populations initiated with apterous individuals exclusively. Moreover, the initial presence of alate individuals in the populations increased aphid prevalence (i.e. proportion of plants colonised). Similarly, both increased population size and prevalence were observed when predator‐free space was accessible through flight, as opposed to when it was inaccessible. 4. These results show that despite high costs to fecundity, an investment in alate individuals is neither beneficial nor detrimental to population size when predator‐free space is accessible, but increases aphid prevalence. It is concluded that prevalence might provide an ecological advantage important enough to warrant the production of alate morphs under intense predation.  相似文献

Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae), the main vector of yellow fever and dengue viruses, was eradicated from Argentina between 1955 and 1963, but reinvaded the country in 1986. In Uruguay, the species was reintroduced in 1997. In this study we used highly polymorphic inter‐simple sequence repeats (ISSR) markers to analyse the genetic structure of Ae. aegypti populations from Uruguay and northeastern Argentina to identify possible colonization patterns of the vector. Overall genetic differentiation among populations was high (FST = 0.106) and showed no correlation with geographic distance, which is consistent with the short time since the reintroduction of the species in the area. Differentiation between pairs of Argentine populations (FST 0.072 to 0.221) was on average higher than between Uruguayan populations (FST?0.044 to 0.116). Bayesian estimation of population structure defined four genetic clusters and most populations were admixtures of two of them: Mercedes and Treinta y Tres (Uruguay) were mixtures of clusters 1 and 3; Salto (Uruguay) and Paraná (Argentina) of clusters 1 and 4; Fray Bentos (Uruguay) of clusters 2 and 3, and Gualeguaychú (Argentina) of clusters 2 and 3. Posadas and Buenos Aires in Argentina were fairly genetically homogeneous. Our results suggest that Ae. aegypti recolonized Uruguay from bordering cities in Argentina via bridges over the Uruguay River and also from Brazil.  相似文献

We investigated the local environmental controls on daily fluctuations of cumulative radial increment and cambial hydration of three dominant, evergreen tree species from montane, Coastal rainforests of Chiloé Island, Chile (42° 22′ S). During 2 years (1997–1998 and 1998–1999) we recorded hourly cumulative radial increments using electronic band dendrometers in the long‐lived conifer Fitzroya cupressoides (Cupressaceae), the evergreen broad‐leaved Nothofagus nitida (Nothofagaceae), and the narrow‐leaved conifer Podocarpus nubigena (Podocarpaceae). We also measured soil and cambial tissue hydration using capacitance sensors, together with air and soil temperature and rainfall during the period of the study. In addition, we collected cores of these tree species to evaluate how dendrometer measurements reflect annual tree ring width. One‐year long daily time series of cumulative radial increments suggests that radial growth of Fitzroya cupressoides was initiated slowly in early spring, with a maximum in early summer. Multiple regressions showed positive relations between daily precipitation and radial index (i.e. the difference in cumulative radial increment of two consecutive days) in the three species. According to path analysis there was a significant direct effect of changes in tree hydration on radial index of the three focal species. In emergent, pioneer species such as Nothofagus and Fitzroya, radial index was negatively affected by changes in maximum air temperature and photosynthetically active radiation, probably because of high evapotranspiration demand on warm sunny days. The shade‐tolerant species Podocarpus nubigena was positively affected by photosynthetically active radiation. Our diel scale findings support the use of tree ring widths for reconstructing past climate in these southern temperate forests and provide evidence that rainforest trees may be highly sensitive to future declines in rainfall and temperature increases during summer.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to quantify the phenotypic differences amongst the taxa included in Veronica subgenus Pentasepalae, represented in the western Mediterranean area. In combination with previously obtained data on genotypic differences, this enabled the recognition of eight taxonomic units. The delimitation of the boundaries among species and subspecies was mainly based on molecular data, whereas the best characters to discriminate taxa were selected after an accurate study of herbarium material and living populations. Such a selection was also supported by a detailed morphometric study of 30 quantitative leaf traits in 88 populations. Several morphological characters, including the length of the trichomes, length of the petiole and leaf division, were found to be robust, and could be useful in the identification of the taxa involved. As a conclusion, a key to the taxa is proposed, as well as a complete nomenclatural treatment for the group, which includes the typification of several names. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 159 , 68–87.  相似文献

Abstract Testosterone underlies the expression of most secondary sexual traits, playing a key role in sexual selection. However, high levels might be associated with physiological costs, such as immunosuppression. Immunostimulant carotenoids underpin the expression of many red‐yellow ornaments, but are regulated by testosterone and constrained by parasites. We manipulated testosterone and nematode burdens in red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) in two populations to tease apart their effects on carotenoid levels, ornament size and colouration in three time‐step periods. We found no evidence for interactive effects of testosterone and parasites on ornament size and colouration. We showed that ornament colouration was testosterone‐driven. However, parasites decreased comb size with a time delay and testosterone increased carotenoid levels in one of the populations. This suggests that environmental context plays a key role in determining how individuals resolve the trade‐off between allocating carotenoids for ornamental coloration or for self‐maintenance needs. Our study advocates that adequately testing the mechanisms behind the production or maintenance of secondary sexual characters has to take into account the dynamics of sexual trait expression and their environmental context.  相似文献

Vertebrates commonly use carotenoid‐based traits as social signals. These can reliably advertise current nutritional status and health because carotenoids must be acquired through the diet and their allocation to ornaments is traded‐off against other self‐maintenance needs. We propose that the coloration more generally reveals an individual’s ability to cope with stressful conditions. We tested this idea by manipulating the nematode parasite infection in free‐living red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) and examining the effects on body mass, carotenoid‐based coloration of a main social signal and the amount of corticosterone deposited in feathers grown during the experiment. We show that parasites increase stress and reduce carotenoid‐based coloration, and that the impact of parasites on coloration was associated with changes in corticosterone, more than changes in body mass. Carotenoid‐based coloration appears linked to physiological stress and could therefore reveal an individual’s ability to cope with stressors.  相似文献

In this paper we propose an explanation for (a) the predominanceof male care in fishes, and (b) the phylogenies and transitionsthat occur among care states. We also provide a general evolutionarymodel for studying the conditions under which parental careevolves. Our conclusions are as follows: (i) Parental care hasonly one benefit, the increased survivorship of young. It may,however, have three costs: a "mating cost," an "adult survivorshipcost," and a "future fertility cost." (ii) On average, malesand females will derive the same benefit from care. They probablyalso pay the same adult survivorship cost. However, their matingcost and future fertility costs may differ, (iii) A mating costusually applies only to males. However, this cost may be reducedby male territoriality and, in some situations, be entirelyremoved. Under this condition, natural selection on presentreproductive success is equivalent for males and females, (iv)When fecundity accelerates with body size in females, whilemale mating success follows a linear relationship with bodysize, future fertility costs of parental care are greater forfemales than males. Although further tests are needed, a preliminaryanalysis suggests this often may be the case in fishes. Thus,the predominance of male parental care in fishes is not explainedby males deriving greater benefits from care, but by males payingsmaller future costs. Males thus accrue a greater net fitnessadvantage from parental care (see expressions [6] and [12]).(v) The evolution of biparental care from uniparental male caremay occur because male care selects for larger egg sizes andincreased embryo investment by females. This increases the benefitto the female of parental care, (vi) By contrast, uniparentalfemale care may originate from biparental care when males areselected to desert. This occurs when female care creates a matingcost to males. In some cases male desertion may "lock" femalesinto uniparental care. However, in many other cases femalesmay be selected to desert, giving rise to "no care." (vii) Theorigin of uniparental female care from no care is rare in externallyfertilizing fishes. This is because the benefits of care rarelyoutweigh a female's future fertility costs (expression [9]).For internally fertilizing species, however, the benefit ofcare is high whereas the cost is probably low. Most of thesespecies have evolved embryo retention, (viii) When parentalcare begins with male care and moves to biparental care, ouranalysis suggests that care evolution will include cyclicaldynamics. Parental care in some fishes may thus be seen as transitionaland changing through evolutionary time rather than as an evolutionarilystable state. In theory, "no care" may be a phylogeneticallyadvanced state.  相似文献

Twenty‐three isolates of the widely distributed marine bacteria Alteromonas macleodii have been analysed by multilocus sequence analysis combined with phylogenetic and multivariate statistical analyses. The strains originated from the Pacific Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, English Channel, Black Sea and Thailand. Using the nucleotide sequences of nine loci for each of the 23 isolates, a robust identification was achieved of different clades within the single species. Strains generally clustered with the depth in the water column from which the isolate originated. Strains also showed more recombination with isolates from the same vicinity, suggesting that genetic exchange plays a role in diversification of planktonic marine prokaryotes. This study thus shows for the first time for a large set of isolates of a species of planktonic marine prokaryotes that multilocus sequence analysis overcomes the problems associated with the analysis of individual marker genes or presence of extensive recombination events. It can thus achieve intraspecific identification to the level of genotypes and, by comparison with relevant environmental data, ecotypes.  相似文献
