A Study of wound reaction of the metaphloem of the stem by white-light,fluorescence, and electron microscopy provides evidence forthe structure of mature sieve elements in the intact plant.Starch grains usually are retained in plastids which are locatedagainst the lateral walls of sieve elements and concentratedat both ends of each cell. Slime plugs and dense connectingstrands in the sieve plates seem to result from reactions tocutting or penetration of the killing agent; after appropriatemethods of killing, the contents of a connecting strand maybe only slightly denser, if any, than the milieu on either sideof the sieve plate. A strange accumulation of slime, consistingof streamers directed toward the wound surface from each sieveplate, occurred in tissue boiled immediately after incisionof the phloem. Callose is present in sieve elements of intactplants when the tissue is killed within 4 seconds after injury.Callose is accumulated in response to wounding in added amounts,but only after 5 minutes or more and only within about 15 sieveelements from the wound. Quantities of callose sufficient forplugging the sieve plate accumulate after 30 minutes or more.Sieve-plate callose and deposits on the nearby lateral wallsproduce a cup-shaped mass which is called a cup deposit. 相似文献

Urbanization involves the conversion of natural habitats into human‐modified ecosystems and is known to reduce the diversity and abundance of indigenous plant and animal communities. Urbanization may lead to the extinction of indigenous species or facilitate the establishment of non‐indigenous communities in cities and towns. We analysed sighting records held in wildlife databases to infer the probability of persistence of reptiles and amphibians (‘herpetofauna’) within Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Throughout greater Melbourne, 81% (13) of the 16 frog species recorded had ≥95% probability of being extant in 2006, compared with 56% (22) of the 39 species of reptiles recorded. The number of frog species that had ≥95% probability of being extant in inner local government areas (LGAs) within 10 km of the centre of Melbourne was higher (86%) than in the outer LGAs (69%). Conversely, only 46% of reptile species had ≥95% probability of being extant in inner and outer LGAs. The proportion of reptile species with <50% probability of being extant in inner LGAs was higher than for frog species (25% and 7%, respectively), suggesting that reptiles have been negatively affected by urbanization to a much greater extent than frogs. Based on the probability of species being extant, frogs and reptiles exhibited variations in their response to urbanization between species that persisted (urban‐adapters) and species that did not (urban‐sensitive or urban‐avoiders). These differences in response were likely related to individual species' life‐history and their requirements for habitat, space and dispersal. To conserve herpetofauna in urban areas we need to maintain structural complexity in remnant habitat patches, and implement strategic policies and management actions that protect habitat remnants and habitat corridors. 相似文献

Abstract: The palaeoloricate ‘polyplacophorans’ are an extinct paraphyletic group of basal chiton‐like organisms known primarily from their fossilized valves. Their phylogenetic placement remains contentious, but they are likely to include both stem‐group Polyplacophora and stem‐group Aplacophora. Candidates for the latter position include ‘Helminthochiton’thraivensis from the Ordovician of Scotland, which we redescribe here through a combined optical and micro‐CT (XMT) restudy of the type material. The 11 specimens in the type series are all articulated, presenting partial or complete valve series as well as mouldic preservation of the girdle armature; they demonstrate a vermiform body plan. The valves are typically palaeoloricate in aspect, but differ in detail from all existing palaeoloricate genera; we hence erect Phthipodochiton gen. nov. to contain the species. The most notable feature of the fossils is the spicular girdle; this is impersistently preserved, but demonstrably wraps entirely around the ventral surface of the animal, implying that a ‘true’ (i.e. polyplacophoran like) foot was absent, although we do not exclude the possibility of a narrow solenogastre‐like median pedal groove having been present. Phthipodochiton thraivensis presents an apparent mosaic of aplacophoran and polyplacophoran features and as such will inform our understanding of the relationship between these groups of extant molluscs. An inference may also be drawn that at least some other palaeoloricates possessed an ‘armoured aplacophoran’ body plan, in contrast to the ‘limpet‐like’ body plan of extant Polyplacophora. 相似文献

Sporozoite extracts of E. vermiformis, E. stiedai, and E. tenella are rich in acid phosphatase activity. They contain specific enzyme activities equal to or greater than those reported for other highly virulent protozoan parasites. The absolute amount of enzyme activity per oocyst dramatically increases during sporulation of E. stiedai and E. vermiformis. Partial characterization of the acid phosphatase activity of E. vermiformis indicates that sporozoites account for greater than 92% of the total activity in sporubted oocysts, that the enzyme is resistant to inhibition by tartrate, and that it can be separated into two forms by anion exchange chroma-tography. 相似文献
