Lapwing Vanellus vanellus is known to be declining throughout much of its UK breeding range. The ecological requirements of the species are well known and a variety of mechanisms exist which can be implemented to help recovery. Arable options within agri-environment schemes can be used to provide breeding habitat throughout the species' UK range, and targeted recovery projects have been shown to have the potential to deliver increases in breeding pairs at the local level. The farming community need to be made aware of the requirements of Lapwing if agriculture and conservation needs are to be integrated.  相似文献

Abstract.1. Communities of stem-boring insects attacking the grass Calamagrostis epigeios (L.) Roth were analysed from twenty-five pure stands of C. epigeios differing in area and isolation. Insect communities comprised nine phytophagous and eighteen entomophagous species. Most abundant herbivores (attacking > 1% of all shoots) were Tetramesa eximia (Giraud) (Hym. Eurytomidae), Eurytoma sp. (Hym. Eurytomidae), Lasioptera calamagrostidis (Rübs.) (Dipt. Cecidomyiidae), and Eriopeltis sp. (Hom. Pseudococcidae). About 28% of the twenty-seven species were monophagous, 61% oligophagous (restricted to Poaceae), and 11% polyphagous. Although herbivores generally attacked thick shoots, species-specific differences in the attacked mean diameter were found.2. The main purpose of this study was to analyse the relative effects of area, isolation and unpredictability of available food resources on the abundance of herbivores, parasitoids and resulting tritrophic effects. Variability of shoot abundance varied greatly between years, and even more between habitats within the same year. On average, shoot density per habitat increased or decreased 2.4-fold between succeeding years.3. Variability of grass shoot abundance was not related to habitat characteristics such as area, isolation, biomass, shoot density, changes in area or shoot density between years, or shoot features like internode number or diameter, but was negatively influenced by shading of trees. Similarly, habitat area or isolation did not correlate with other habitat features.4. Grass shoot abundance was the most important predictor of species abundance and attack rate of herbivores. In contrast to expectations, area and isolation of habitats did not explain differences in species richness, and only influenced abundance of three species. In addition, even the experimental removal of all grass shoots (and thereby, of all stem-boring insects) from five habitats in winter did not negatively influence colonization the following year. These results suggest a surprisingly high mobility of this rather specialized community of stem-boring insects that appeared to superimpose on area and isolation effects. Unpredictability of grass shoot abundance was presumably the main selection pressure for the obviously high dispersal abilities of the Calamagrostis insects.5. Per cent parasitism was mainly influenced by the percentage of attacked shoots. Parasitism of T. eximia by its major parasitoid also correlated with habitat connectivity, emphasizing the hypothesis that a continuum of habitats should be particularly favourable for the third trophic level.  相似文献

This paper presents the karyotype, DNA content and meiotic behaviourof five species ofViciafrom Argentina (V. macrogramineaBurk.,V.gramineaSM.,V. epetiolarisBurk.,V. pampicolaBurk. andV. nanaVog.).All the species have the same chromosome number and karyotypeformula (2n=14; 6m+4st+4t). Each species, however, displaysa characteristic number and position of the nucleolar organizerregion (NOR) and different sizes of the respective satellites,confirmed by Ag-NOR banding. Moreover, significant differenceswere found in the total chromosome volume (TCV) and DNA contentof the species. Positive correlations between DNA content andTCV, and between DNA content and type of life cycle were alsofound. TCV and DNA content are lower inV. nana(annual) and higherinV. macrograminea(biennial–perennial). The material displayedmarked karyotypic orthoselection, with similar karyotypes inall studied species, even when the overall chromosome size varied.Evolutionary changes in DNA amount are proportional to the relativelength of each chromosome arm, maintaining karyotypic uniformity.Significant differences were found between the meiotic behaviourofV. gramineaand that of the other species.V. gramineahas alower frequency of ring bivalents and chiasmata per cell, andalso has a lower interstitial chiasma frequency. Phylogenetic relationships among the apocritan wasps were investigated using comparative sequence data from the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene. The gene fragment contained three length polymorphic regions. Relationships that were not sensitive to the alignment procedure are discussed, but should be considered as preliminary only. Maximum parsimony analysis recovered the Evaniomorpha ( sensu Rasnitsyn, 1988) as a monophyletic group, with the pattern of relationships Ceraphronoidea + (Evanioidea + [Megalyroidea + Trigonalyoidea]). The Proctotrupomorpha ( sensu Rasnitsyn, 1988) were also recovered as a monophyletic group, while the Proctotrupoidea were recovered as paraphyletic. The Proctotrupoidea were only monophyletic if the Platygastroidea and Chalcidoidea were included (i.e. Proctotrupomorpha). Relationships of the Proctotrupomorpha that were supported by this analysis included Diapriidae + (Platygastroidea + Chalcidoidea), and the Vanhorniidae falling inside the Proctotrupidae. However, resolution of other relationships within the Proctotrupomorpha was less reliable, as indicated by low decay indices and low bootstrap proportions. Similarly, the placement of the Cynipoidea relative to the other apocritan lineages was also not recovered confidently.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The circadian flight activity of Aedes aegypti L. infected with the filarial parasite Brugia pahangi was recorded for 16 consecutive days using an acoustic actograph. The flight activity of uninfected control mosquitoes in a LD 12:12h regime rose to a maximum 3 days after bloodfeeding, then decreased slightly and remained steady for the duration of the experiment. The flight activity of parasitized mosquitoes was temporarily depressed for 2 days after feeding on a microfilariaemic cat; this was probably caused by the parasites migrating from the midgut to the flight muscles. As parasitic larvae grew within the flight muscles during days 3—6, the daily activity of all mosquitoes returned to control levels. On days 7—8 the activity of mosquitoes parasitized with thirteen or more larvae fell dramatically to approximately 10% of that of the controls; this change coincided with the emergence of the highly-active infective stage larvae from the flight muscles. The presence of fewer larvae did not impair flight. Because of their reduced flight capability, heavily-infected mosquitoes probably play little if any part in the transmission of filariasis.  相似文献

The activity and resting behaviour of resistant and susceptible Anopheles stephensi Liston were recorded in acoustic actograph chambers lined with residual deposits of malathion, dieldrin or gamma HCH. In gamma HCH-treated flight chambers, SS and RS mosquitoes became active only after picking up lethal doses of insecticide, which explains why few SS and RS mosquitoes survive release into gamma HCH-treated experimental huts. Similar results were obtained in flight chambers treated with dieldrin; however, more mosquitoes would be expected to survive dieldrin under field conditions because resistance to this insecticide is greater than to gamma HCH. Mosquitoes in contact with malathion showed a three-phase activity pattern: an initial active phase, an inactive phase, and hyper-activity/convulsions. Initial activity or irritability was especially pronounced in SS and RS but absent in RR mosquitoes. Whether or not irritability would protect RS mosquitoes from malathion would probably depend on the ratio of sprayed to unsprayed surfaces in treated huts.  相似文献
