Neotropical monkeys of the genera Cacajao, Chiropotes, and Pithecia (Pitheciidae) are considered to be highly arboreal, spending most of their time feeding and traveling in the upper canopy. Until now, the use of terrestrial substrates has not been analyzed in detail in this group. Here, we review the frequency of terrestrial use among pitheciin taxa to determine the ecological and social conditions that might lead to such behavior. We collated published and unpublished data from 14 taxa in the three genera. Data were gleaned from 53 published studies (including five on multiple pitheciin genera) and personal communications of unpublished data distributed across 31 localities. Terrestrial activity was reported in 61% of Pithecia field studies (11 of 18), in 34% of Chiropotes studies (10 of 29), and 36% of Cacajao studies (4 of 11). Within Pithecia, terrestrial behavior was more frequently reported in smaller species (e.g. P. pithecia) that are vertical clingers and leapers and make extensive use of the understory than in in the larger bodied canopy dwellers of the western Amazon (e.g. P. irrorata). Terrestrial behavior in Pithecia also occurred more frequently and lasted longer than in Cacajao or Chiropotes. An apparent association was found between flooded habitats and terrestrial activity and there is evidence of the development of a “local pattern” of terrestrial use in some populations. Seasonal fruit availability also may stimulate terrestrial behavior. Individuals also descended to the ground when visiting mineral licks, escaping predators, and responding to accidents such as a dropped infant. We describe a biogeographic pattern in which mammalian body size extremes scale with landmass area. The relationship between
the largest and the smallest mammal species found on different landbridge islands, mountaintops and continents shows that
the size of the largest species increases, while that of the smallest species decreases, with increase in the area of the
landmass. We offer two possible explanations: (1) that the pattern is the result of sampling artefacts, which we call the
‘statistical artefact hypothesis’, or (2) that the pattern is the result of processes related to the way body size affects
the number of individuals that a particular species can pack in a given area, which we call the ‘area-scaling hypothesis’.
Our results point out that the pattern is not a statistical artefact resulting from random sampling, but can be explained
by considering the scaling of individual space requirements and its effect on population survival on landmasses of different
area.

Metriorhynchids were a peculiar group of fully marine Mesozoic crocodylomorphs, some of which reached large body size and were probably apex predators. The estimation of their total body length in the past has proven problematic. Rigorous size estimation was provided using five complete metriorhynchid specimens, by means of regression equations derived from basicranial and femoral length against total body length. The use of the Alligator femoral regression equation as a proxy to estimate metriorhynchid total body length led to a slight underestimation, whereas cranial regression equations of extant genera resulted in an overestimation of body length. Therefore, the scaling of crania and femora to total body length of metriorhynchids is noticeably different from that of extant crocodylians, indicating that extant crocodylians are not ideal proxies for size reconstruction of extinct taxa that deviate from their semi‐aquatic morphotype. The lack of a correlation between maximum, minimum, or the range of generic body lengths with species richness demonstrates that species diversification is driven by factors other than just variation in body size. Maximum likelihood modelling also found no evidence for directionality in body size evolution. A Study of wound reaction of the metaphloem of the stem by white-light,fluorescence, and electron microscopy provides evidence forthe structure of mature sieve elements in the intact plant.Starch grains usually are retained in plastids which are locatedagainst the lateral walls of sieve elements and concentratedat both ends of each cell. Slime plugs and dense connectingstrands in the sieve plates seem to result from reactions tocutting or penetration of the killing agent; after appropriatemethods of killing, the contents of a connecting strand maybe only slightly denser, if any, than the milieu on either sideof the sieve plate. A strange accumulation of slime, consistingof streamers directed toward the wound surface from each sieveplate, occurred in tissue boiled immediately after incisionof the phloem. Callose is present in sieve elements of intactplants when the tissue is killed within 4 seconds after injury.Callose is accumulated in response to wounding in added amounts,but only after 5 minutes or more and only within about 15 sieveelements from the wound.
