1. Algal-community metrics were calculated for periphyton samples collected from 976 streams and rivers by the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Programme during 1993–2001 to evaluate national and regional relations with water chemistry and to compare whether algal-metric values differ significantly among undeveloped and developed land-use classifications.
2. Algal metrics with significant positive correlations with nutrient concentrations included indicators of trophic condition, organic enrichment, salinity, motility and taxa richness. The relative abundance of nitrogen-fixing algae was negatively correlated with nitrogen concentrations, and the abundance of diatom species associated with high dissolved oxygen concentrations was negatively correlated with both nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Median algal-metric values and nutrient concentrations were significantly lower at undeveloped sites than those draining agricultural or urban catchments.
3. Total algal biovolume did not differ significantly among major river catchments or land-use classifications, and was only weakly correlated with nitrate (positive) and suspended-sediment (negative) concentrations. Estimates of periphyton chlorophyll a indicated an oligotrophic–mesotrophic boundary of about 21 mg m−2 and a mesotrophic–eutrophic boundary of about 55 mg m−2 based on upper and lower quartiles of the biovolume data distribution.
4. Although algal species tolerance to nutrient and organic enrichment is well documented, additional taxonomic and autecological research on sensitive, endemic algal species would further enhance water-quality assessments.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Growth and reproduction were measured for Daphnia pulex (Leydig) fed Scenedesmus obliquus (Turp.) Kutz. grown with nitrogen-sufficient and nitrogen-deficient media. The incorporation of carbon into the body of D. pulex was traced using 14C-labelled algae and biochemical fractionation.
2. Scenedesmus cultured on N-defkient media allocated more carbon to lipid and less to protein than when cultured on N-sufficient media.
3. In a short-term feeding experiment, Daphnia accumulated more lipid when fed N-deficient algal cells high in lipid content than when fed algae grown on N-sufficient media that were lower in lipid.
4. Animals grew faster and produced larger broods when fed algae grown on an N-sufficient medium over an 8-day period. Daphnids fed N-deficient algae had higher quantities of body lipid, suggesting it was not a lack of energy which limited their growth and reproduction.
5. Daphnia fed algae grown on N-deficient media allocated more lipid to eggs, and their offspring lived longer under starvation conditions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Crude homogenates of the ciliate protozoon, Tetrahymena thermophila, can hydrolyze the potent acetylcholinesterase inhibitors O, O-diisopropylphosphorofluoridate (DFP) and O-1,2,2-trimethylpropylmethylphosphonofluoride (soman). Characterization of the enzymatic activity of the homogenate has been performed. The DFPase operates over a pH range of 4 to 10 and an ionic range of 0–500 mM NaCl. Rate of reaction increases three-to four-fold from 25°C to 40°C and is still present at 55°C. These results indicate that the enzymatic activity operates over a broad range of environmental conditions, making it an attractive material for use in the detoxification and detection of organofluorophosphates. DFPases may be important in the metabolism of naturally occurring organophosphates.  相似文献

Discoveries of Late Triassic alatoform bivalves (family Wallowaconchidae) in Alaska and in south Asia and Arabia reveal a broad distribution for these tropical bivalves, overturning the concept of these bivalves being endemics of offshore island arc terranes in eastern Panthalassa. They occupied an area extending from central Tethys to the eastern Pacific margin of Panthalassa. The Tethyan wallowaconchids occur in nearshore environments on the north margin of Gondwana, indicating an environmental tolerance for continental shelf settings in addition to their primary occurrence on isolated oceanic islands. The new sites reveal a taxonomic diversity among wallowaconchids. Wallowaconchids present in India are conspecific with Wallowaconcha raylenea, the type species of Wallowaconcha, whereas wallowaconchids in Arabia are an undescribed taxon and wallowaconchids in south-central Alaska are small in size and a different undescribed taxon. All known wallowaconchids are of Norian age and they appear to be a wide-ranging component of Late Triassic tropical biotas.  相似文献

Abstract Urbanization profoundly alters the biota of areas that become cities and towns. Many species are introduced by humans while indigenous species often decline. Although these changes are well known, the long‐term ecological effects of new species and their interactions are seldom considered and rarely documented. This study examines changes in diversity and temporal availability of the food resources of Pteropus poliocephalus (Grey‐headed Flying‐fox) in the Melbourne region using a variety of historical and current data sources. Our results indicate that urbanization has influenced the distribution, abundance and ecology of P. poliocephalus through a dramatic increase in the quantity and temporal availability of food resources. Prior to European settlement, only 13 species recorded in the range‐wide diet of P. poliocephalus grew in the Melbourne area. Compilations of street‐tree databases indicate that an additional 87 species have been planted on Melbourne’s streets and that there are at least 315 500 trees that are able to provide food for P. poliocephalus. Phenology records indicate that street trees have lengthened the temporal availability of food for P. poliocephalus. A period of natural food scarcity between May and August has been ameliorated by street trees which have provided nectar and a previously absent fruit resource. These changes are likely to be a major factor contributing to the recent range expansion of P. poliocephalus and the establishment of a permanent camp in Melbourne.  相似文献

Recent developments in the field of neurosurgery, specifically those dealing with the modification of mood and affect as part of psychiatric disease, have led some researchers to discuss the ethical implications of surgery to alter personality and personal identity. As knowledge and technology advance, discussions of surgery to alter undesirable traits, or possibly the enhancement of normal traits, will play an increasingly larger role in the ethical literature. So far, identity and enhancement have yet to be explored in a neurosurgical context, despite the fact that 1) neurological disease and treatment both potentially alter identity, and 2) that neurosurgeons will likely be the purveyors of future enhancement implantable technology. Here, we use interviews with neurosurgical patients to shed light on the ethical issues and challenges that surround identity and enhancement in neurosurgery. The results provide insight into how patients approach their identity prior to potentially identity-altering procedures and what future ethical challenges lay ahead for clinicians and researchers in the field of neurotherapeutics.  相似文献

Abstract. Field trials were undertaken to determine the effect of close proximity of humans to livestock on the human biting rates exhibited by various anophelines. The results indicate that proximity to cattle and to goats increases the subject's chances of being bitten by anophelines. Man-biting by Anopheles stephensi rose by 38% (8–68% CI) in the presence of a cow, and by 50% (16–84% CI) in the presence of two goats. Other species exhibited similar trends. These findings explain the results of an earlier trial which revealed that malaria prevalence was higher amongst families that kept cattle than those that did not.
The findings are discussed in relation to existing information regarding the host preferences of local anophelines and classic theories regarding zooprophylaxis. Our findings suggest that animals are only likely to have a worthwhile prophylactic affect when the vector is zoophilic, and then only when the animals are deployed to form a barrier between that vector and man. In situations where deployment of livestock to form a zoobarrier is impractical, the livestock should be located as far from man as possible.  相似文献

Abstract.  Insects, particularly phloem-feeding Sternorrhyncha, are known to produce sugars in their honeydew (excreta) that are not found in their host plants. Of these, Bemisia tabaci , the sweet potato whitefly, is the only insect known to produce trehalulose [α- d -glucose (1,1) d -fructose] as a major component of its honeydew. The present study aims to determine whether trehalulose is comparable to sucrose as a nutrient source for three whitefly parasitoids ( Encarsia formosa , Encarsia pergandiella and Eretmocerus eremicus ). In addition, the study also examines trehalulose feeding effects on longevity for a parasitoid of muscoid Diptera, Nasonia vitripennis . Parasitoids are provided diets of either sucrose or trehalulose in varying concentrations (from 0.1% to 70%) or a water control. Sucrose and trehalulose are not significantly different in affecting survival when compared at the same concentration. This was true for all Bemisia parasitoids and N. vitripennis. Certain specific diets are significantly different in pairwise combination tests. There is a significant effect of species, diet type and the interaction of these two factors on the longevity of the three different Bemisia parasitoid species; however, within species, there is no significant increase in longevity observed for either carbohydrate diet. This result contrasts with expectations for the effects of host-modified carbohydrates on longevity. The implications are that, although carbohydrate feeding is essential for these parasitoids, these host-provided sources of carbohydrates are equally capable of extending longevity.  相似文献

Capacitance monitoring is commonly used as an efficient means to generate growth curves of bacterial pathogens. However, the use of capacitance monitoring with Campylobacter spp. was previously determined to be difficult due to the complexity of the required media. We investigated capacitance monitoring using a simplified medium for the efficient and reproducible construction of growth curves for Campylobacter spp . It was determined that Campylobacter spp. should initially be propagated on Mueller Hinton plates in a microaerobic atmosphere (5% O2, 10% CO2, 85% N2) at 37C for 24 h, followed by transfer to Mueller Hinton biphasic cultures for 6 h at 37C in a microaerobic atmosphere. Serial dilutions of the Campylobacter spp. cultures should be used for inoculation of Bactometer wells that contain 1 mL Mueller Hinton broth supplemented with 0.1 M sodium pyruvate for the completion of Campylobacter spp. growth curves with the Bactometer.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS


Growth rates can vary greatly among Campylobacter isolates; therefore, the rapid and reproducible methods described will prove useful in studies where the generation of growth curves is critical for subsequent experimental analyses.  相似文献

We address the generic limits of Gnidia (Thymelaeaceae) through a phylogenetic analysis of nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and plastid rbcL, trnL intron and trnL‐F intergenic spacer regions. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference were used to produce trees and assess internal support. The most significant conclusion drawn from the molecular analysis is that Gnidia is polyphyletic as currently circumscribed, comprising at least four distinct lineages that are each related to other genera within Thymelaeoideae. Gnidia pinifolia and G. racemosa are members of a clade within which Struthiola is embedded; a second group of species allies with Drapetes as sister to Passerina; and a third lineage corresponds to the previously recognized genus Lasiosiphon. The remaining species of Gnidia included in this study are allied with the Australian genus Pimelea.
