The relationship between uptake by barley roots and translocationto shoots has been examined under different conditions for sixherbicides and a systemic fungicide (four triazines, diuron,2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and ethirimol). For all thesecompounds a large proportion of the material taken up by rootsdoes not appear to move readily to the shoots. Elution withwater of the roots of intact plants which had previously beenplaced in labelled solutions of these compounds enabled thematerial released to be separated into three fractions differingin their rates of diffusion out of the roots. There was reasonablygood correlation between the concentration of the most readilydiffusible fraction in the roots and the concentration in thetranspiration stream. The results obtained were consistent withthe postulate that lipophilic compounds can diffuse into thevacuoles of the cortical cells where they are available fortransport to the shoots, whereas for lipophobic compounds materialreaching the shoots originates largely from the free space inthe roots.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The apicoplast is a relict plastid found in many medically important apicomplexan parasites, such as Plasmodium and Toxoplasma. Phylogenetic analysis and the presence of four bounding membranes indicate that the apicoplast arose from a secondary endosymbiosis. Here we review what has been discovered about the complex journey proteins take to reach compartments of the apicoplast. The targeting sequences for luminal proteins are well‐defined, but those routing proteins to other compartments are only beginning to be studied. Recent work suggests that the trafficking mechanisms involve a variety of molecules of different phylogenetic origins. We highlight some remaining questions regarding protein trafficking to this divergent organelle.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Plants may benefit from both chemical resistance traits and the presence of predators of herbivores. In past studies, the interaction between resistance and predators varies from complementary to antagonistic among different systems. However, this interaction has primarily been quantified by effects on predator abundance or vigor, not effects on plant fitness. 2. In this study, the combined effects of chemical resistance and predators on plant fitness were examined using soybeans (Glycine max), herbivorous Mexican bean beetles (Epilachna varivestis), and predaceous spined soldier bugs (Podisus maculiventris). Mexican bean beetles were reared in field cages in the presence or absence of spined soldier bugs on soybeans with or without strong constitutive chemical resistance. 3. Spined soldier bugs were more likely to feed on Mexican bean beetles that fed on susceptible than on resistant plants. 4. Susceptible plants with predators produced significantly more seeds than those without predators, while resistant plants did not produce significantly different numbers of seeds based on the presence or absence of predators. 5. Selection for the production of some types of chemical resistance in plants would thus be expected to be stronger with lower predation rates. 6. These results also suggest predator introductions would be more effective on plants without a strong constitutive chemical resistance to herbivores.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Superimposed upon seasonal changes in morphology,physiology and behavior, are facultative responses to unpredictableevents known as labile (i.e., short-lived) perturbation factors(LPFs). These responses include behavioral and physiologicalchanges that enhance survival and collectively make up the "emergency"life history stage. There is considerable evidence that glucocorticosteroids,and other hormones in the hypothalamo—pituitary—adrenal(HPA) cascade, initiate and orchestrate the emergency life historystage within minutes to hours. This stage has a number of sub—stagesthat promote survival and avoid potential deleterious effectsof stress that may result from chronically elevated levels ofcirculating glucocorticosteroids over days and weeks. Thesesub—stages may include: redirection of behavior from anormal life history stage to increased foraging, irruptivetypemigration during the day, enhanced restfulness at night, andelevated gluconeogenesis. Once the perturbation passes, glucocorticosteroidsmay also promote recovery. Additional evidence from birds indicatesthat glucocorticosteroid responses to a standardized capture,handling and restraint protocol are modulated both on seasonaland individual levels. Field work reveals that these changesin responsiveness to LPFs have ecological bases, such as reproductivestate, body condition etc., that in turn indicate differenthormonal control mechanisms in the HPA cascade.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Published and unpublished data on the cultivation of P. carinii were reviewed by a panel of investigators convened by the National Institutes of Health. Although several cell culture systems allow propagation of P. carinii for a limited time with modest rates of replication, these have not proved adequate for isolation of P. carinii in sufficient quantity to explore important basic biological investigation. Attempts at cell-free culture have yielded only transient proliferation. Because much of the unsuccessful work on cultivation of the organism has been unpublished, the panel agreed that these data may be useful to other investigators in designing experimental strategies for cultivation. Therefore, the purpose of this report is to make available this information to researchers, lest others unknowingly repeat unsuccessful methods. It is hoped that by documenting the history and the complexities of Pneumocystis culture, renewed interest and efforts will be directed toward this fundamental scientific challenge.  相似文献

A total of 77 strains of Gram negative anaerobes belonging to the genus Bacteroides and isolated from 60 subcutaneous abscesses and 10 cases of pyothorax in cats, have been examined morphologically and biochemically. Colony pigmentation, gas chromatography and biochemical analysis placed them into two major categories-those which produced pigmented colonies (Group 1) and those which failed to produce pigmented colonies after 14 d on laked blood agar (Group 2). All 29 strains in Group 1 produced acetic, propionic, isobutyric, butyric, isovaleric and succinic acids but failed to ferment carbohydrates, and were classified as B. asaccharolyticus. All organisms in Group 2 produced acetic, propionic, isobutyric, isovaleric and succinic acids and were divided into four categories based on indole production and bile tolerance. Designation to species was then decided on the basis of phenylacetic acid production and sugar fermentation tests. This sequence of analysis of results enabled confident speciation of some groups of these organisms despite some biochemical variation of the cat strains when compared to human type strains.  相似文献
