Analysis of the stem vasculature of the American climbing palm Desmoncus reveals structural features differing significantly from the Old World rattan genus Calamus . Desmoncus has a more directly continuous vascular system but nevertheless shows a vessel distribution that makes for high hydraulic resistance in the axial xylem. Desmoncus is like Calamus in having a single very wide metaxylem vessel in each central axial bundle and is also without direct vascular contact between protoxylem and metaxylem tracheary elements. However, in Desmoncus the stem vascular bundle system resembles that in tree palms (as has been described in the model palm Rhapis excelsa ) in having a continuing axial bundle that branches from each outgoing leaf trace together with a large number of bridge connections between leaf traces and peripheral axial bundles. Resistance to axial water transport is, however, evident in the narrowness of the continuing metaxylem elements in the peripheral stem vascular region. Desmoncus has scalariform perforation plates with few thickening bars in the metaxylem vessels, unlike the simple perforation plates found in Calamus . Thus, Desmoncus shows only limited convergence in stem vascular architecture toward the extreme modifications found in Calamus . This is not unexpected since it is clear that the climbing habit evolved independently in the two genera.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2003, 142 , 243−254.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Extracts of corpora cardiaca from two cockroaches, Nauphoeta cinerea Olivier and Leucophaea maderae F., from a cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus De Geer, from the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say, and from the sphinx moth, Sphinx ligustri L. were assayed for adipokinetic and hypertrehalosaemic activity, in acceptor locusts ( Locusta migratoria L.) and cockroaches ( Periplaneta americana L.) respectively. Both bioassays give positive results with all corpus cardiacum material tested except that from the sphinx moth; in this insect haemolymph lipid concentrations (but not those of the total carbohydrate) are, however, increased after injection of an extract of corpora cardiaca from the same species. A similar result is obtained when specimens of G. bimaculatus are injected with an extract of corpora cardiaca from G. bimaculatus. Biological activities of corpus cardiacum extracts from all species investigated can be resolved on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Gland extracts from the two cockroach species each show a single absorbance peak which has hypertrehalosaemic activity, but with a (common) retention time distinct from all previously described arthropod neuropeptides. The corpora cardiaca of G. bimaculatus contain also a novel adipokinetic factor with a retention time distinct from previously characterized arthropod hormones, as well as from the new cockroach factor described in this study. The two hypertrehalosaemic factors from the corpora cardiaca of the potato beetle coelute with the hypertrehalosaemic hormones I and II of the American cockroach. The active (adipokinetic) compound from glands of S. ligustri appears to coelute with locust adipokinetic hormone I.  相似文献

It is shown that the response of transpiration to light is different in species from Gramineae and Cyperaceae compared to species from other families. Blue light (380–500 nm) causes both a rapid response (rise time 2 min) and a slow response (rise time 5 to 10 min) in species from these two families but induces only a slow response in other families. Red light results only in a slow response in all plants investigated. It is hypothesized that the rapid response to blue light is due to the special anatomy and/or function of the so-called grass-like (graminaceous) stomata of plants belonging to Gramineae or Cyperaceae.  相似文献

The Aphnaeinae (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae) are a largely African subfamily of 278 described species that exhibit extraordinary life‐history variation. The larvae of these butterflies typically form mutualistic associations with ants, and feed on a wide variety of plants, including 23 families in 19 orders. However, at least one species in each of 9 of the 17 genera is aphytophagous, parasitically feeding on the eggs, brood or regurgitations of ants. This diversity in diet and type of symbiotic association makes the phylogenetic relations of the Aphnaeinae of particular interest. A phylogenetic hypothesis for the Aphnaeinae was inferred from 4.4 kb covering the mitochondrial marker COI and five nuclear markers (wg, H3, CAD, GAPDH and EF1α) for each of 79 ingroup taxa representing 15 of the 17 currently recognized genera, as well as three outgroup taxa. Maximum Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference analyses all support Heath's systematic revision of the clade based on morphological characters. Ancestral range inference suggests an African origin for the subfamily with a single dispersal into Asia. The common ancestor of the aphnaeines likely associated with myrmicine ants in the genus Crematogaster and plants of the order Fabales.  相似文献
