The predatory behaviour of 31 species of Myrmarachne , ant-like salticids, was studied in the laboratory and the field. The ant-like morphology and locomotion of these spiders appears to function primarily in Batesian mimicry. No evidence was found of Myrmarachne feeding on ants. However, predatory sequences were found to differ considerably from those typical of salticids. Instead of stalking and leaping on prey, Myrmarachne lunged at prey from close range. Myrmarachne used its legs I to tap prey before lunging, another unusual behaviour for a salticid. Myrmarachne fed on a wide range of arthropod prey in nature and the laboratory, but appears to be especially efficient at catching moths. Also, Myrmarachne tends to open up, or enter into, other spiders' nests and eat other spiders' eggs. Myrmarachne males were less efficient than females, in laboratory tests, at catching various types of arthropod prey, but they appear to be as efficient as females at oophagy. Myrmarachne tend to use webs of other spiders as nest sites, but no evidence was found of Myrmarachne preying on spiders in webs. It appears that the unusual features of Myrmarachne's predatory and nesting behaviour are important in enabling these spiders to preserve their ant-like appearance.  相似文献

  • 1 An experiment was conducted to investigate potential impacts of food limitation and copepod predation on juvenile survival of Chaoborus purtctipennis. We tested the hypotheses that: (i) juvenile survival of Chaoborus is influenced more by copepod predation than by starvation in a productive environment, and (ii) food limitation and predation interact to affect survival.
  • 2 Effects of food concentration (approximately 800, 1400 and 2300 microzooplankton 1-?1) and predator density (0, 1 and 2 Mesocydops edax 1-?1) on Chaoborus development and survival were evaluated using a 3 × 3 factorial design. Jars containing lake water, the appropriate food and predator treatments, and two Chaoborus (<12h old) were rotated on a plankton wheel at 25°C. Survival and developmental stage were monitored daily until all individuals had either died or moulted to instar II.
  • 3 Predation by Mesocydops was the major source of mortality, causing 87.5% of Chaoborus deaths over all treatments. Chaoborus mortality was significantly higher in treatments with Mesocydops (67–100%) than in predator-free treatment (0–13%).
  • 4 Development time was significantly longer in the low-density food treatment than in the highest food treatment.
  • 5 No significant interaction between food limitation and predation was detected.
  • 6 These results suggest that predation by copepods may limit recruitment of juvenile Chaoborus in productive lakes.

Four plant species (Zea mays, Lolium italicum, Phaseolus vulgaris,and Pisum sativum) were grown either with full nutrient supplyor with calcium, potassium, or nitrogen deficiency. After 4–6weeks the shoots were analysed for their content of K+, Ca2+,Mg2+, and Na+, of total anions, and of organic acids. The qualitativepattern of organic acid components, characteristic of each species,remained, with few exceptions, unchanged by deficiency treatments.Striking differences were detected in the total acid contentand in the quantities of the respective main organic acid components,especially in potassium-deficient plants. These changes showedstrong correlations with alterations of cation excess and demonstratethat aconitate in Zea mays, malonate in Phaseolus vulgaris,and citrate in Pisum sativum contribute to charge balance.  相似文献

Genetic variability among root voles (Microtus oeconomus [Pallas, 1776]) originating from two distantly separate regions of Norway (Valdres and Finnmark) was studied by DNA fingerprinting using the probes 33.15, 33.6 and M13. All three probes revealed polymorphic, although relatively simple, patterns. DNA fingerprint banding patterns were clearly diagnostic of the animals' region of origin. Notably, Valdres animals display a high molecular-weight cluster of bands not found in Finnmark, reflective of the isolation, and possibly an indication of separate colonization events, of the two groups. On the local level in Finnmark, bands associating with a specific trap site were observed in trappings on consecutive years. Comparisons of Finnmark animals taken at three trap sites at approximately 10 km intervals show a gradient of genetic similarity. Captive bred siblings were also compared, yielding average values significantly higher than those seen from same-site comparisons. We suggest that the sensitivity provided by DNA fingerprinting with multi-locus minisatellite probes is appropriate for population genetic studies in M. oeconomus. Also, because band-sharing correlates to spacing in M. oeconomus, we propose that DNA fingerprinting may be used to study dispersal, recruitment and other population processes in this and possibly other rodent species.  相似文献

The understanding of mimicry has relied on a strong biosystematic framework ever since early naturalists first recognized this textbook example of natural selection. We follow in this tradition, applying new biosystematics information to resolve problems in an especially difficult genus of tropical butterflies. Mechanitis species are important components of Neotropical mimetic communities. However, their colour pattern variability has presented challenges for systematists, and has made it difficult to study the very mimicry they so nicely illustrate. The South American Mechanitis mazaeus and relatives have remained particularly intractable. Recent systematists have recognized one highly polytypic species, whereas earlier work recognized the melanic Andean foothill races as a distinct species: Mechanitis messenoides. Recent molecular evidence suggests M. mazaeus and M. messenoides are genetically well differentiated, but evidence of morphological and ecological differences indicative of separate species was still lacking. Thus, it remains to be conclusively demonstrated whether this is an extreme case of a polymorphic mimetic species, or whether distinct co‐mimetic lineages are involved. Here we provide evidence that M. mazaeus and M. messenoides are ecologically distinct and identify consistent morphological differences in both adult and immature stages. These ecological and morphological differences are correlated with mitochondrial sequence data. In spite of some overlap in almost all traits, wing shape, adult colour pattern, and larval colour pattern differ between the two species, in addition to clutch size and larval host use in local sympatry. Although three well‐differentiated mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups were identified within these two species, one for M. mazaeus and two within M. messenoides, no morphological or ecological differences were found between two mtDNA haplogroups, both of which appear to belong to M. messenoides. We conclude that M. mazaeus and M. messenoides are distinct although highly polymorphic species, each with multiple sympatric co‐mimetic forms, and suggest that further work is needed to clarify the identity of other phenotypes and subspecies of Mechanitis. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 106 , 540–560.  相似文献

The correct identification of colony boundaries is an essential prerequisite for empirical studies of ant behaviour and evolution. Ant colonies function at various organizational levels, and these boundaries may be difficult to assess. Moreover, new complexity can be generated through the presence of spatially discrete subgroups within a more or less genetically homogeneous colony, a situation called polydomy. A colony is polydomous only if individuals (workers and brood) of its constituent nests function as a social and cooperative unit and are regularly interchanged among nests. This condition was previously called polycalic, and the term polydomy was used in a broader sense for a group of daughter nests of the same mother colony (implying limited female dispersal), without regard to whether these different nests continued to exchange individuals. We think that this distinction between ‘polycaly’ and ‘polydomy’ concerns two disparate concepts. We thus prefer the narrower definition of polydomy, which groups individuals that interact socially. Does this new level of organization affect the way in which natural selection acts on social traits? Here, after examining the history of terms, we review all ant species that have been described as expressing polydomous structures. We show that there is no particular syndrome of traits predictably associated with polydomy. We detail the existing theoretical predictions and empirical results on the ecology of polydomy, and the impact of polydomy on social evolution and investment strategies, while carefully distinguishing monogynous from polygynous species. In 2009 the WPA President established a Task Force that was to examine available evidence about the stigmatization of psychiatry and psychiatrists and to make recommendations about action that national psychiatric societies and psychiatrists as professionals could do to reduce or prevent the stigmatization of their discipline as well as to prevent its nefarious consequences. This paper presents a summary of the Task Force’s findings and recommendations. The Task Force reviewed the literature concerning the image of psychiatry and psychiatrists in the media and the opinions about psychiatry and psychiatrists of the general public, of students of medicine, of health professionals other than psychiatrists and of persons with mental illness and their families. It also reviewed the evidence about the interventions that have been undertaken to combat stigma and consequent discrimination and made a series of recommendations to the national psychiatric societies and to individual psychiatrists. The Task Force laid emphasis on the formulation of best practices of psychiatry and their application in health services and on the revision of curricula for the training of health personnel. It also recommended that national psychiatric societies establish links with other professional associations, with organizations of patients and their relatives and with the media in order to approach the problems of stigma on a broad front. The Task Force also underlined the role that psychiatrists can play in the prevention of stigmatization of psychiatry, stressing the need to develop a respectful relationship with patients, to strictly observe ethical rules in the practice of psychiatry and to maintain professional competence.  相似文献

In the past, practice in mental health was guided by the belief that individuals with serious mental illnesses do not recover. The course of their illness was either seen pessimistically, as deteriorative, or optimistically, as a maintenance course. Research over the past thirty to forty years has indicted that belief and shown that a vision of recovery can be achieved for many individuals. People with serious mental illnesses have themselves published accounts of their own recovery as well as advocated for the development of recovery promoting services. In North America and other regions, policies have been developed to make recovery the guiding vision of services. Today, particularly in the United States, much effort is going into the transformation of services and systems to achieve recovery outcomes. Despite these trends, the idea of recovery remains controversial and, some say, even illusory. This article clarifies the meaning of the term "recovery", reviews the research and first person accounts providing a rationale for recovery, and sets out implications for developing recovery oriented services.  相似文献

Soluble proteins from three strains of the blue-green alga Spirulina were compared by antigen-antibody crossed electrophoresis. The three algal strains were shown to contain at least two immunologically identical proteins. Differences between all three strains were found among proteins with low electrophoretic mobility. Antigen-antibody crossed electro-phoresis is a very sensitive method and could be used as a complement to morphology and other characteristics when comparing different algal strains.  相似文献
