Two steganacarid species, Steganacarus ( Steganacarus ) tenerifensis and S . ( S .) carlosi , the first endemic to Tenerife and the second to La Gomera and Tenerife, were found to have such wide morphological variability as to cast doubt on their specific limits. Cluster analysis and MDS ordering were used to quantify morphological variation, and biochemical procedures were used to assess genetic variation in the two entities. The results revealed disagreement between the morphological and genetic data as reported in previous studies on steganacarid mites. Morphological traits were highly heterogeneous in the Canary island populations and genetic structure was homogeneous with very low heterozygosity. The separation of the two Canary island species, not to mention the phenotypes close to carlosi , is difficult to justify due to their very high genetic identity. The presence of morphological intermediates suggests the same conclusion. However, the sympatry of some phenotypes and previous data on this animal group are a source of doubt and suggest that further investigations are needed before conclusions can be reached in this regard. Correlations between morphological differentiation and known palaeogeographic events are suggested in the light of the possible evolutionary history of the steganacarid mites on the Canary islands. 相似文献

The species related to Vriesea paraibica (Bromeliaceae, Tillandsioideae) have controversial taxonomic limits. For several decades, this group has been identified in herbarium collections as V. × morreniana, an artificial hybrid that does not grow in natural habitats. The aim of this study was to assess the morphological variation in the V. paraibica complex through morphometric analyses of natural populations. Two sets of analyses were performed: the first involved six natural populations (G1) and the second was carried out on taxa that emerged from the first analysis, but using material from herbarium collections (G2). Univariate ANOVA was used, as well as discriminant analysis of 16 morphometric variables in G1 and 18 in G2. The results of the analyses of the two groups were similar and led to the selection of diagnostic traits of four species. Lengths of the lower and median floral bracts were significant for the separation of red and yellow floral bracts. Vriesea paraibica and V. interrogatoria have red bracts; these two species are differentiated by the widths of the lower and median portions of the inflorescence and by scape length. These structures are larger in the former and smaller in the latter. Global amphibian declines are linked with the presence of specific, highly virulent genotypes of the emerging fungal disease chytridiomycosis caused by Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) known as the global panzootic lineage (Bd‐GPL). The global trade in amphibians for human consumption is suspected to have facilitated emergence of the disease, but evidence to support this is largely lacking. Here, we investigated the role the Lithobates catesbeianus (North American bullfrog) trade in spreading Bd genotypes by comparing strains associated with L. catesbeianus to a global panel using 36 sequenced loci from multiple chromosomal regions. Most bullfrogs were infected with Bd‐GPL genotypes, but we also detected novel, highly divergent Bd genotypes (Bd‐Brazil) from a live bullfrog in a US market and from native Brazilian anurans in the Atlantic Forest where bullfrogs are widely farmed. Sexual reproduction was also detected for the first time in Bd in the form of a hybrid genotype between the Bd‐GPL and Bd‐Brazil lineages in the Atlantic Forest. Despite the demonstration that ribosomal RNA types in Bd fail to undergo concerted evolution (over 20 sequence types may be found in a single strain), the Bd‐GPL and Bd‐Brazil lineages form largely separate clusters of related internal transcribed spacer (ITS) RNA sequences. Using ITS sequences, we then demonstrate the presence of Bd‐Brazil in Japan, primarily on invasive L. catesbeianus. The finding that Bd is capable of sexual reproduction between panzootic and endemic genotypes emphasizes the risk of international wildlife trade as a source of additional Bd epizootics owing to hybridization. 相似文献

Pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) provide an important model for biomedical research on human disease and for studying the evolution of primate behavior. The genetic structure of captive populations of pigtailed macaques is not as well described as that of captive rhesus (M. mulatta) or cynomolgus (M. fascicularis) macaques. The Washington National Primate Research Center houses the largest captive colony of pigtailed macaques located in several different housing facilities. Based on genotypes of 18 microsatellite (short tandem repeat [STR]) loci, these pigtailed macaques are more genetically diverse than captive rhesus macaques and exhibit relatively low levels of inbreeding. Colony genetic management facilitates the maintenance of genetic variability without compromising production goals of a breeding facility. The periodic introduction of new founders from specific sources to separate housing facilities at different times influenced the colony's genetic structure over time and space markedly but did not alter its genetic diversity significantly. Changes in genetic structure over time were predominantly due to the inclusion of animals from the Yerkes National Primate Research Center in the original colony and after 2005. Strategies to equalize founder representation in the colony have maximized the representation of the founders’ genomes in the extant population. Were exchange of animals among the facilities increased, further differentiation could be avoided. The use of highly differentiated animals may confound interpretations of phenotypic differences due to the inflation of the genetic contribution to phenotypic variance of heritable traits. Am. J. ABSTRACT. To develop molecular markers for lower trypanosmatids, we have examined the mini-exon gene repeats of 17 isolates that were classified as Crithidia by traditional methods. Representative repeats were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and the amplification products were cloned and used as hybridization probes against genomic DNA. Six hybridization groups of Crithidia were defined on the basis of the DNA blotting experiments. The three endosymbiont-bearing species ( C. deanei, C. desouzai and C. oncopelti ) and C. acanthocephali each belonged to single-member hybridization groups, while the C. fasciculata group contained additional named and undesignated species. The Crithidia lucilae thermophila probe hybridized to multiple undesignated isolates. The DNA sequence of the cloned products revealed that the specificity of the hybridization probes was due to substantial differences in the intron and the non-transcribed spacer regions. Grain of op-2 Maya have a higher total protein content in bothendosperm and germ than normal maize. In large grain, differencesin total grain protein are due mainly to the endosperm whilein small grain, differences are due to the germ, particularlythe scutellum which is larger in op-2 kernels. Reserve proteincomposition was distinct: op-2 endosperms showed an increasein the proportions of albumins, globulins, and the glutelinG3 fraction which was accompanied by a marked decrease in zeincontent in comparison with normal endosperms. During endosperm depletion there was a net increase in the salt-solublefraction prior to day 3 from imbibition; glutelins and zeinhowever decreased throughout, the former being degraded at initiallyfaster rates. In general, regardless of protein composition,the most abundant fraction was utilized most rapidly. Water uptake during imbibition was greater in op-2 grain, thoughno differences in axis growth in terms of dry weight or laminaarea were apparent at the end of reserve degradation. The ability of 13 strains of Salmonella , representing 12 serotypes, to grow in a tryptone-yeast extract-glucose medium, acidified with HC1 to pH values between 3.80 and 5.60 at intervals of 0.20 units, has been investigated. During incubation at 30°C, growth occurred at minimum pH values of 3.8–4.0 in 1–3 d. At 20°C, growth occurred at minimum pH values of 3.8–4.2 in 3–5 d.
