The annual killifish genus Austrolebias includes approximately 38 species distributed throughout the Paraná-Plata basin and Patos-Merín system. Within the Austrolebias adloffi species complex, the Uruguayan populations of Austrolebias charrua were considered as an intergradation between A. adloffi and Austrolebias viarius populations. Austrolebias charrua presents an intermediate phenotype between both taxa and high levels of morphological and chromatic variability. In the present study, we incorporate different methodological approaches (molecular, morphology, and gamete ultrastructure) to elucidate the pattern of differentiation among the parapatric taxa ( A. charrua , Austrolebias reicherti , A. viarius ) distributed in a Biosphere Reserve Site. Analyses of cytochrome b sequences show high values of DNA polymorphism, in particular for A. charrua. This is in accordance with both morphological and gametic variation. Using a statistical parsimony network based on these sequences and analysis of morphological data, past fragmentation and range expansion involving perhaps secondary contact between A. charrua and A. reicherti could be proposed. Coloration pattern and morphometric analyses showed an unexpected higher similarity between the most distantly-related taxa, A. viarius and A. charrua . This could be the result of retention of ancestral polymorphisms, especially in A. charrua populations from ponds of higher elevation, or to directional selection acting in similar ecological environments. Because these annual killifish species are considered endangered, our work reinforces the high priority need to include them in a conservation programme.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 98 , 620–635.  相似文献

Morphometric variation in the Robertsonian polymorphism zone of Barcelona of Mus musculus domesticus was studied by geometric morphometrics. This system is characterized by populations of reduced diploid number (2 n  = 27–39) surrounded by standard populations (2 n  = 40). We investigated the morphological variation in mice from this area, as well as the effect of geographical distance and karyotype on this variation. We also investigated the degree of co-variation between the two functional units of the mandible to explore the origin of this system (primary intergradation or secondary contact). The size and shape of the cranium, mandible and scapula were analysed for 226 specimens grouped by population, chromosome number and structural heterozygosity. Size was estimated as the centroid size, and shape was estimated after Procrustes superimposition. No significant differences in size between populations or chromosomal groups were detected. Diploid number, structural heterozygosity and local geographical isolation contributed to the differentiation in shape. Morphological differentiation between standard mice and Robertsonian specimens was observed, suggesting genetic isolation between these groups. Co-variation between the ascending ramus and alveolar region of the mandible was quantified by the trace correlation between landmark subsets of these modules. The trace values showed an ascending trend, correlated with the distance from the centre of the polymorphism area, a pattern consistent with a primary intergradation scenario.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 555–570.  相似文献

Two accessions of Brachiaria brizantha under cytological analysis showed 2 n  = 5x = 45 chromosomes. Pentaploidy probably resulted from natural hybridization between two species that were not closely related: an apomictic tetraploid male (2 n  = 4x = 36), and a sexual diploid female (2 n  = 2x = 18). The lack of affinity between genomes was clearly indicated by asynchrony during meiosis. The haploid genome ( n  = 9) showed unique behaviour, remaining univalent during prophase I and metaphase I, and undergoing sister-chromatid segregation and lagging at anaphase I. The laggard genome did not always reach the poles in time to be included in the telophase nucleus. However, when the inclusion was effective, this genome was distributed peripherally, changing the otherwise spherical nucleus shape. In the second division, the haploid genome behaved similarly, but as there was sister-chromatid segregation during the first division, the chromatids were slow to reach the poles, forming several micronuclei at telophase II. The two accessions were characterized as allo-autopentaploids, with the tetraploid genome (2 n  = 4x = 36) designated as B (from B. brizantha ) and the haploid genome as X, representing a species with a distinct genome having little affinity with the B genome. Thus, the hybrids' genome composition is represented by BBBBX. By comparing their meiotic behaviour with that observed in synthetic hybrids between B. brizantha and B. ruziziensis analysed previously, B. ruziziensis is the putative diploid sexual parent species in these pentaploid accessions.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London , Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 150 , 441–446.  相似文献

Abstract: A specimen of Curculionidae (Curculioninae) is described as Arariperhinus monnei gen. et sp. nov. The specimen is preserved on a laminated limestone sample of the Crato Formation (Santana Group), Lower Cretaceous (Aptian–Albian), and was collected from a quarry near Nova Olinda, Chapada do Araripe, State of Ceará, Brazil. The genus is placed in the subfamily Curculioninae because of its strongly convex body and relatively slender rostrum, but mainly by its rounded eyes and lack of a prosternal sulcus and tibial spurs. The very prominent eyes in lateral view, a cylindrical rostrum and a straight posterior margin of ventrite II are strong indications that this fossil belongs to the tribe Anthonomini. However, the claws, which would resolve the exact placement of this fossil, are poorly preserved. Arariperhinus monnei gen. et sp. nov. is distinguishable by the combination of several characters and the first record of the family Curculionidae in the Santana Group; it is the oldest record of a member of the subfamily Curculioninae.  相似文献

1. The effect of habitat fragmentation on freshwater species has been addressed using brown trout Salmo trutta L. as a model species with a dendritic population structure. 2. Microsatellite loci were employed as molecular markers. Levels of gene flow and population subdivision were determined in more than 1200 brown trout individuals inhabiting four south European rivers with contrasting patterns of fragmentation, defined by the presence of barriers. 3. The genetic units in the four rivers were restricted by artificial barriers, and gene flow among samples within each river was associated with the level of fragmentation of the river. 4. Loss of genetic diversity and dislocation of the dendritic model have been detected in fragmented rivers. These results emphasise the importance of mitigating the impact of dams by constructing passages to restore gene flow along the river, for fish and other migratory species, as well as the need for caution in relation to stocking in isolated areas to avoid problems of inbreeding.  相似文献

Dendrobatid frogs have undergone an extensive systematic reorganization based on recent molecular findings. The present work describes karyotypes of the Brazilian species Adelphobates castaneoticus, A. quinquevittatus, Ameerega picta, A. galactonotus and Dendrobates tinctorius which were compared to each other and with previously described related species. All karyotypes consisted of 2n = 18 chromosomes, except for A. picta which had 2n = 24. The karyotypes of the Adelphobates and D. tinctorius species were highly similar to each other and to the other 2n = 18 previously studied species, revealing conserved karyotypic characteristics in both genera. In recent phylogenetic studies, all Adelphobates species were grouped in a clade separated from the Dendrobates species. Thus, we hypothesized that their common karyotypic traits may have a distinct origin by chromosome rearrangements and mutations. In A. picta, with 2n = 24, chromosome features of pairs from 1 to 8 are shared with other previously karyotyped species within this genus. Hence, the A. picta data reinforced that the C-banding pattern and the NOR location are species-specific traits in the genus Ameerega. Moreover, the Ameerega monophyletism proposed by previous phylogenetic studies indicates that the karyotypic differences among species in this genus result from a long divergence time.  相似文献

A total of 44 accessions of Brachiaria decumbens were analysed for chromosome count and meiotic behaviour in order to identify potential progenitors for crosses. Among them, 15 accessions presented 2n = 18; 27 accessions, 2n = 36; and 2 accessions, 2n = 45 chromosomes. Among the diploid accessions, the rate of meiotic abnormalities was low, ranging from 0.82% to 7.93%. In the 27 tetraploid accessions, the rate of meiotic abnormalities ranged from 18.41% to 65.83%. The most common meiotic abnormalities were related to irregular chromosome segregation, but chromosome stickiness and abnormal cytokinesis were observed in low frequency. All abnormalities can compromise pollen viability by generating unbalanced gametes. Based on the chromosome number and meiotic stability, the present study indicates the apomictic tetraploid accessions that can act as male genitor to produce interspecific hybrids with B. ruziziensis or intraspecific hybrids with recently artificially tetraploidized accessions.  相似文献

Sequence data for internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and partial external transcribed spacer (ETS) regions were combined in a phylogenetic analysis with previously obtained plastid DNA restriction site data to provide a comprehensive molecular phylogenetic hypothesis for derived members of subtribe Helianthinae. Analyses of the two molecular datasets provided conflicting evidence on relationships among some groups, supporting the hypothesis that hybridization has played a significant role in the divergence of the subtribe. A revised generic‐level classification is presented that divides the approximately 350 species of the subtribe among 21 genera. The paraphyletic Viguiera is narrowed to embrace only the type species, V. dentata. Four newly described genera, Dendroviguiera, Gonzalezia, Heiseria and Sidneya, are composed of species formerly included in Viguiera. Aldama is expanded to include 118 species extending from southwestern North America and Mexico to South America. This requires 116 new combinations, including 58 that were recently transferred into Rhysolepis, which is a synonym of Aldama, based on molecular phylogenetic results. One species of Viguiera is transferred to Tithonia, and two combinations in Hymenostephium are validated. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 167 , 311–331.  相似文献
