Freshwater snails in the genus Biomphalaria transmit Schistosoma mansoni in Africa, South America and the Caribbean region. Although considerable attention has been given to the identification of species, little is known of evolutionary relationships among the species. A phylogenetic analysis of 25 populations representing 11 species was performed on 25 enzyme loci examined using starch gel electrophoresis. A phylogenetic analysis of the individual populations produced 60 trees of equal length. The 60 trees have a consistency index value of 75.9% and a retention index value of 76.5%. The phylogenetic analysis provided strong support for the monophyly of Biomphalaria with either 14 or 15 synapomorphies uniting all of the species included and separating them from the outgroup, two species of Helisoma. Four nominal species represented by multiple populations formed monophyletic groups. Populations of B. sudanica, B. choanomphala, and B. alexandrina were interspersed. Ten arrangements were obtained for the populations of these three species. A variety of ingroup taxa were used to root the trees, and all provided support for the use of Helisoma species as an outgroup. In all of the trees obtained, the African species together formed a monophyletic group. In none of the trees obtained did the neotropical species form a monophyletic group. A constrained analysis requiring the monophyly of the neotropical species as well as the African species resulted in 90 trees just two steps longer than the shortest trees. Analysis of the species from either hemisphere alone resulted in decreased resolution, as measured by an increase in the number of trees obtained. This finding suggests that further comparisons of species from the two hemispheres will be of considerable value. Finally, two species which are resistant to infection with S. mansoni were included among the eleven studied. Neither of these species formed the sister group to all of the other species included, indicating that susceptibility is the plesiomorphic state, and that resistance is derived. Similarly, in none of the trees obtained did the two resistant species fall out as sister taxa, indicating that resistance arose independently twice.  相似文献

1. Reduction in diversity of both freshwater aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems has been attributed to salinity increase and such increases are a symptom of changes to land use. Hydrological alteration to ground and surface water are likely to be associated with salinity increase and its influence on biodiversity. However the combined effects of salinity and hydrology on aquatic biodiversity have not been elucidated fully in either field or experimental situations. 2. The effect of salinity and water regime on the biota in sediments from seven wetlands from inland south‐eastern Australia was tested experimentally using germination of aquatic plant seeds (five salinity and two water levels) and emergence of zooplankton eggs (five salinity levels). Salinity levels were <300, 1000, 2000, 3000, 5000 mg L?1 and water regimes were damp (waterlogged) and submerged. 3. Aquatic plant germination and zooplankton hatching was not consistent for all seven wetland sediments. Four of the wetland sediments, Narran Lakes, Gwydir Wetlands, Macquarie Marshes and Billybung Lagoon showed similar responses to salinity and water regime but the other three wetland sediments from Lake Cowal, Great Cumbung Swamp and Darling Anabranch did not. 4. As salinity increased above 1000 mg L?1 there was a decrease in the species richness and the abundance of biota germinating or hatching from sediment from four of the wetlands. 5. Salinity had a particularly strong effect in reducing germination from sediments in damp conditions when compared to the flooded conditions. In parallel, salts accumulated in the sediment in damp conditions but did not in flooded conditions. 6. There is potential for increasing salinity in freshwater rivers and wetlands to decrease the species richness of aquatic communities and thus of the wetland community as a whole, resulting in loss of wetland biodiversity. This reduction in diversity varies between wetlands and is at least partly related to hydrology. For aquatic plants the reduction in diversity will be more marked for plants germinating from seed banks at the edges of wetlands where plants are not completely submerged than for the same seed bank germinating in submerged conditions.  相似文献

1. Allochthonous organic matter, in the form of senesced leaves, is a major source of carbon supporting detrital food webs. While studies have documented the role of bacteria and fungi in the decomposition of leaf litter, little information is available regarding the role of protists in the decomposition process. 2. We tested the hypothesis that the presence of stream‐dwelling bacterivorous protists leads to an increased rate of leaf decomposition through grazing pressure on bacteria. We isolated live protists from decomposing leaves collected in a stream in Northern Virginia, U.S.A. (Goose Creek) and established laboratory cultures of common bacterivorous protists. 3. Recently senesced leaves from the field were used in laboratory microcosm experiments to determine if the rate of litter decomposition differed between four treatments: bacteria only, bacteria + flagellates, bacteria + flagellates + ciliates, autoclaved stream water (control). We determined the dry weight of leaf remaining, bacterial abundance, flagellate abundance and ciliate abundance for each replicate on days 0, 7, 14, 30, 60 and 120. 4. The rate of leaf decomposition was significantly higher in treatments with protists than without and bacterial abundance declined in protist treatments compared with bacteria only treatment. Weight loss in the presence of flagellates was three to four times higher when protists were present compared with treatments with bacteria alone. These results provide experimental evidence that protists could play a significant role in the detrital processes of streams.  相似文献

The morphology and anatomy of pollen presenters, styles andpollen of species ofBanksia, Dryandra, Hakea, IsopogonandMacadamiawerestudied. Serial sections of pistils and SEM images of pollenwere quantified to determine whether the low fertility observedin the Proteaceae has a structural basis. Pollen access to thestigma was investigated. There were three types of stigmaticcavity. A groove in which the stigmatic papillae were enclosedwas present inDryandra, BanksiaandHakea. Macadamiahad a groovewith protruding papillae, andIsopogonhad a tube which enclosedthe papillae. Anatomical studies showed the pollen presenterto be structurally complex but overall to have similar internalanatomy across the species studied. The species could be groupedaccording to presence or absence of transfer tissue and presenceor absence of sclerenchyma, but these groups were not mutuallyexclusive. In the pistil there were three structural filtersto pollen tube passage. The first was at the stigma, where pollengrain access could be limited by the diameter or length of thestigmatic groove or the capacity of the pollination chamberin relation to pollen volume. ABSTRACT

The acoustically complex predator-elicited calls of the Florida scrub jay Aphelocoma c. coerulescens were classified operationally by a new procedure, dichotomous sorting. Vocalizations were tape-recorded in the field during natural and experimental encounters between scrub jays and several types of live and mounted predators. Six continuous, independent variables of frequency and duration were measured in 539 randomly selected calls. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was used to identify the variables that contributed the most variation to a given data set. Univariate frequency-of-occurrence histograms and bivariate scatter plots were used to locate distributional breaks or separations that established dichotomous subdivisions of the data set. The analytical steps were repeated on each subsequent subset of calls. Some variables that appeared graded by visual inspection were distinctly discontinuous and defined call types. Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) was used to confirm the PCA-based approach and to explore unresolved variation in heterogeneous categories. These steps produced specific criteria to classify 12 call types and subtypes that included several Inflected types that rose and fell in frequency, Steep and Low calls that only rose in frequency over time, and Flat call types that did not change in frequency over time. The criteria can be applied much like a dichotomous key to classify other scrub jay call data sets, and the methodological strategy is widely applicable to acoustical communication systems in general.  相似文献

Two strains of Dunaliella, one halotolerant and one halophilic,were grown in batch culture at NaCl concentrations varying from500 mol m–3 to 3000 mol m–3. Measurements were madeof the following solutes: glycerol, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Cl,phosphate in the cells of logarithmic and of stationary-phasecultures. The method used was to separate the cells from thebulk of the medium by differential density centrifugation. Soluteconcentrations were calculated using Blue Dextran as a markerfor extracellular space. It was found that in log-phase cells,glycerol accounted for one-half to two-thirds of the total cellsolute concentration, the remainder being largely accountedfor by Na+ and Cl. In the stationary phase glycerol felland Na+, plus Cl, rose. Light intensity was found toaffect cell volume and solute content. The means whereby soluteconcentrations are controlled is discussed. Twelve isolates of Dunaliella with average cell volumes rangingfrom 50 to 1400x10–18 m3 were grown in batch culture at0.5 M or 2.0 M NaCl. Glycerol and ions (Na+, K+, Mg2+, CI,phosphate) were measured in log-phase cultures. The contentsof Mg2+, K+ and phosphate per cell were found to be a functionof cell-volume. Cell glycerol, Na+ and Cl were functionsof cell-volume and of the NaCl concentration in the medium.Solute concentrations were calculated from the measured cell-volumesand from the 3H2O content of pellets corrected for intercellularspace using Blue Dextran. Cell glycerol was found to accountfor about one-half of the expected osmolarity, the remainderbeing largely accounted for by Na+ and CI.
