Age-related differences in foraging efficiency and behaviour were investigated in a population of colour-ringed Silvereyes Zosterops lateralis . First-year birds were less efficient foragers than older birds with second-year birds being intermediate. First- and second-year birds had lower success rates than older birds overall, and for most capture techniques and substrates. First-year birds never attempted breeding while about half of the second-year birds and all of the older birds did. Both learning and selection effects may have been involved in causing the age-related differences in foraging behaviour. Foraging skills appear to improve during the first 2 years of life and selection could remove the least efficient foragers from the population in winter when food is short. That second-year birds, some of which had already attempted breeding, were not significantly more efficient foragers than first-year birds suggests that reproduction is not delayed until adult levels of foraging efficiency have been attained.  相似文献

The evolution of borings has shown that the morphology of borings is a function of both the borer and its substrate. This study investigated the effect of bryozoan internal skeletal morphology on the dimensions and distribution of borings. One hundred and forty-three trepostome colonies from the Middle and Upper Ordovician strata of northern Estonia were examined. Of these, 80% were matrix entombed, longitudinally sectioned ramose and hemispherical colonies, and 20% were matrix-free hemispherical colonies that allowed examination of the colony surfaces. Seventy-one percent of the ramose colonies were bored, whereas 88% of the hemispherical colonies were bored. On average, only 8% of colony surface areas were bored out. Borings were more randomly oriented in the hemispherical colonies. In contrast in the ramose colonies, the borings tended to more restricted to the thin-walled endozone and thus parallel to the branch axis. This is interpreted to be a function of the thick-walled exozones controlling to some extent where the borer could bore. Based on morphology, the borings in the hemispherical colonies are referred to Trypanites and those in the ramose colonies to Sanctum . Sanctum is revised to include two possible openings and to recognize that boring shapes were inherently constrained by the thick-walled exozones of the host bryozoan colonies. Both trace fossils were probably produced by a boring polychaete that used the tubes as domiciles.  相似文献

Abstract Mensurative experiments investigated the effects of different observers on estimates of the density of shoots of two species of seagrass: Posidonia australis Hook and Zostera capricorni Aschers. Balanced programmes of sampling were used to examine variation in counts of seagrass shoots attributable to different observers, sizes of quadrats, depths and locations within large beds of each species of seagrass. A separate experiment examined differences between novice observers and a more experienced observer, when an ‘optimal’ size of sampling unit was used. Estimated densities of Zostera shoots varied inconsistently among observers, quadrats, depths and locations. Differences between observers were not affected by the size of quadrat used to count Posidonia shoots, but varied between locations in the seagrass bed. Experience had only a minor impact on biases. Only two of 12 novices produced counts that were different from the experienced observer. These results emphasize the importance of considering both accuracy and precision in the design of field studies of seagrasses.  相似文献

Alpine treelines are temperature‐limited vegetation boundaries. Understanding the effects of elevated [CO2] and warming on CO2 and H2O gas exchange may help predict responses of treelines to global change. We measured needle gas exchange of Larix decidua Mill. and Pinus mugo ssp. uncinata DC trees after 9 years of free air CO2 enrichment (575 µmol mol?1) and 4 years of soil warming (+4 °C) and analysed δ13C and δ18O values of needles and tree rings. Tree needles under elevated [CO2] showed neither nitrogen limitation nor end‐product inhibition, and no down‐regulation of maximal photosynthetic rate (Amax) was found. Both tree species showed increased net photosynthetic rates (An) under elevated [CO2] (L. decidua: +39%; P. mugo: +35%). Stomatal conductance (gH2O) was insensitive to changes in [CO2], thus transpiration rates remained unchanged and intrinsic water‐use efficiency (iWUE) increased due to higher An. Soil warming affected neither An nor gH2O. Unresponsiveness of gH2O to [CO2] and warming was confirmed by δ18O needle and tree ring values. Consequently, under sufficient water supply, elevated [CO2] induced sustained enhancement in An and lead to increased C inputs into this ecosystem, while soil warming hardly affected gas exchange of L. decidua and P. mugo at the alpine treeline.  相似文献

Bruniaceae are a small family subendemic to the Cape Floristic Region. Flowers are actinomorphic, choripetalous, pentamerous and tetracyclic. The petals show diverse adaxial swellings, which have been quoted as an example of diplophylly. Developmental studies confirm the true choripetaly of the flowers, thus pointing to an affinity to the Apiales within the euasterids II. They reject, however, the hypothesis of diplophylly as the petal swellings grow out rather late and are not vascularized. According to the position, size and shape of the swellings, six petal types are distinguished, which in part have phylogenetic information. Nectaries occur on the upper part of the ovary. Nectar is exuded through modified stomata serving as secretory channels. A mathematical model of Ihe human upper limb was developed based on high-resolution medical images of the muscles and bones obtained from the Visible Human Male ( HM) project. Three-dimensional surfaces of the muscles and bones were reconstructed from Computed Tomography (CT) images and Color Cryosection images obtained from the VHM cadaver. Thirteen degrees of freedom were used to describe the orientations of seven bones in the model: clavicle, scapula, humerus, radius, ulna, carpal bones, and hand. All of the major articulations from the shoulder girdle down to the wrist were included in the model. The model was actuated by 42 muscle bundles, which represented the actions of 26 muscle groups in the upper limb. The paths of the muscles were modeled using a new approach called the Obstacle-set Method (33) The calculated paths of the muscles were verified by comparing the muscle moment arms computed in the model with the results of anatomical studies reported in the literature, In-vivo measurements of maximum isometric muscle torques developed at the shoulder, elbow, and wrist were also used to estimate the architectural properties of each musculotendon actuator in the model. The entire musculoskeletal model can be reconstructed using the data given in this paper, along with information presented in a companion paper which defines the kinematic structure of the model (26)  相似文献

Association studies utilize the action of recombination over numerous generations to identify loci that underlie quantitative traits. We use a candidate‐gene association approach, segregation analyses and analyses of local linkage disequilibrium (LD) to evaluate the potentially causal effects of molecular variation at PIF4 (PHYTOCROME INTERACTING FACTOR 4) on ecologically important traits in Arabidopsis thaliana. A preliminary analysis of sequence diversity in 14 natural genotypes revealed one intermediate‐frequency replacement polymorphism at PIF4. A sample of 161 natural accessions was genotyped at PIF4 and screened for average length of early internodes, inflorescence length, days to flowering and flowering interval (days between bolting and flowering) under high‐ and low‐density environments to test for genotype‐phenotype associations. PIF4 was associated with early internode lengths, while the PIF4× treatment interaction was associated with flowering interval in the panel of 161 accessions. Further, in a set of recombinant inbred lines that segregate for the PIF4 polymorphism, nucleotide substitutions at PIF4 co‐segregated with early internode lengths, days to flowering and fruit set, suggesting that cryptic population structure in the association‐mapping panel and attendant LD with a physically distant locus do not account for the observed association. Finally, in a panel of pseudochromosomes from 20 re‐sequenced genotypes, LD appeared to decay rapidly in the immediate vicinity of PIF4, suggesting that flanking loci contribute little to the observed association. In sum, the results suggest that PIF4 causally affects early internode lengths on the primary inflorescence, potentially via effects on reproductive timing and that these traits in turn affect fitness.  相似文献
