Agabus bipustulatus (Linnaeus) is one of the most common aquatic beetles in Europe. Two species have been traditionally recognized within the Palaearctic Agabus bipustulatus complex (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae) in Scandinavia: a lowland form A. bipustulatus and a high-altitude form A. solieri Aube. The specific status of solieri has been debated for more than a century but no quantitative investigation has been made to evaluate the status of this taxon. In this study we show that there is no clear-cut delimitation between the two forms, either morphological or genetic, across an altitudinal gradient in north Scandinavia. Morphological differences between 22 populations were analysed separately for each sex with both thin-plate splines relative warp analysis and 'classical-length' morphometries. Genetic variation at five polymorphic enzyme loci was analysed among seven populations. The morphological studies showed gradual variation correlated with altitude, in particular in the character that is traditionally used to separate solieri and bipustulatus , and in both the beetles' morphometric size and the lateral width of the metasternal plate, which is connected to flight capacity. The genetic study indicates that the a-Gpdh enzyme locus, which is involved in the transfer of energy to the flight muscles, is evidently subject to directional selection. Only minor population differences were observed without this system. Subdivision was found in some populations and was probably caused by migration from outside or within the local population. The overall conclusion is that there is no clear-cut species delimitation between A. bipustulatus and A. solieri in north Scandinavia. This indicates that A. solieri is a cold-adapted altitudinal form of the variable A. bipustulatus; additional support for this is the finding of solieri 'look alikes' in cold springs in areas normally inhabited by bipustulatus.  相似文献

Stable isotope composition of organisms from different trophic groups collected from a semi‐isolated wetland pool in the Ross River estuary, northern Australia, was analysed to determine if there was a consistent relationship between δ13C, δ15N and trophic level that could be used to assign trophic positions. A strong linear negative relationship between δ13C and δ15N was detected for the three trophic levels considered (primary producers, primary consumers and secondary consumers). This relationship was consistent among trophic levels, differing only in height, that is, on δ15N values, which indicate trophic positions. A difference of 3.6–3.8‰ between trophic levels was present, suggesting a δ15N fractionation of approximately 3.7‰, a value slightly higher than the commonly assumed δ15N fractionation of approximately 3.4‰. The relationship between δ13C and δ15N was similar for invertebrate and fish primary consumers, indicating similar δ15N trophic fractionation for both groups, meaning trophic positions and trophic length could be reliably calculated based on either invertebrates or fish.  相似文献

A recent study by Väli et al. (2008) highlights that microsatellites will often provide a poor prediction of the genome‐wide nucleotide diversity of wild populations, but does not fully explain why. To clarify and stress the importance of identity disequilibrium and marker variability for correlations between multilocus heterozygosity and genome‐wide genetic variability, we performed a simple simulation with different types of markers, corresponding to microsatellites and SNPs, in populations with different inbreeding history. The importance of identity disequilibrium was apparent for both markers and there was a clear impact of marker variability.  相似文献

The New World Junonia butterflies are a possible ring species with a circum‐Caribbean distribution. Previous reports suggest a steady transition between North and South American forms in Mesoamerica, but in Cuba the forms were thought to co‐exist without interbreeding representing the overlapping ends of the ring. Three criteria establish the existence of a ring species: a ring‐shaped geographic distribution, gene flow among intervening forms and genetic isolation in the region of range overlap. We evaluated mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I haplotypes in Junonia from nine species in the Western Hemisphere to test the Junonia ring species hypothesis. Junonia species are generally not monophyletic with respect to COI haplotypes, which are shared across species. However, two major COI haplotype groups exist. Group A predominates in South America, and Group B predominates in North and Central America. Therefore, COI haplotypes can be used to assess the degree of genetic influence a population receives from each continent. Junonia shows a ring‐shaped distribution around the Caribbean, and evidence is consistent with gene flow among forms of Junonia, including those from Mesoamerica. However, we detected no discontinuity in gene flow in Cuba or elsewhere in the Caribbean consistent with genetic isolation in the region of overlap. Although sampling is still very limited in the critical region, the only remaining possibility for a circum‐Caribbean discontinuity in gene flow is at the Isthmus of Panama, where there may be a transition from 98% Group B haplotypes in Costa Rica to 85–100% Group A haplotypes in South America.  相似文献

There are nine named species of buckeye butterflies (genus Junonia Hübner) in the Western Hemisphere. There is considerable geographic variation within Junonia species, and possible ongoing hybridization between species, suggesting that Junonia may be a ring species, but also making this a very difficult group to define taxonomically. We tried to determine whether two forms of Junonia from Argentina – conventionally referred to as Junonia genoveva hilaris C. & R. Felder, the light buckeye butterfly, and Junonia evarete flirtea (Fabricius), the dark buckeye butterfly – were genetically distinct species or simply colour forms of a single species using morphological characters, mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) DNA barcodes, nuclear wingless (wg) locus DNA sequences, and anonymous nuclear Randomly Amplified Fingerprints (RAF). Phylogenetic analysis of COI identified two distinct mitochondrial haplotypes that differ by about 4% sequence divergence; one confined to light‐coloured Junonia specimens and one shared between some light‐coloured Junonia and all of dark‐coloured Junonia specimens. Analysis of nuclear wingless sequences revealed 32 alleles among 22 Junonia specimens and showed significant genetic differentiation between light‐coloured and dark‐coloured Junonia. Analysis of RAF genotypes suggests that there are actually three genetically distinct Junonia populations in Argentina: two with light wing coloration, and one with dark wing coloration. Genetic evidence of recent hybridization among these populations was also observed, consistent with the ring species hypothesis. Careful comparisons of morphological characters between Argentinian Junonia and Junonia species from elsewhere in South America suggests that the two light‐coloured populations correspond to J. genoveva and either a genetically disparate population of the same species or an undescribed cryptic Junonia species, The dark‐coloured population may correspond to J. wahlbergi Brévignon. Our data suggest that COI DNA barcodes by themselves are not very useful for studying Junonia taxonomy, population structure or evolution.  相似文献

Abstract Species of didelphid marsupials (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) differ in their use of the forest strata, but it is not clear whether these differences are in fundamental or realized niches. The fundamental niche of seven species of didelphids (Caluromys philander, Didelphis aurita, Gracilinanus microtarsus, Marmosops incanus, Metachirus nudicaudatus, Micoureus demerarae, and Philander frenatus) was compared using their performance in arboreal walking. The association between performance and vertical use of the forest also was tested accounting for phylogenetic and allometric effects. Tests consisted of making the animal cross five 3 m long horizontal supports of different diameters, 1 m from the ground. The cycle of maximum speed was chosen to measure stride length, frequency and velocity. Arboreal species performed better than the terrestrial ones, but a major part of the variation in stride length (70.95%) and stride frequency (88.10%) was associated with body size. Part of the variation in stride length independent of body size (14.05%) was associated with the degree of vertical use of the forest, after phylogenetic effects were accounted for. Fundamental niches of six of the seven species were discriminated with the performance tests used. Discrepancies between the realized and fundamental niches can be inferred for two of these species, D. aurita and P. frenatus.  相似文献
