Like many fishes on coral reefs, the false clown anemonefish, Amphiprion ocellaris, has a life history with two different phases: adults are strongly site attached, whereas larvae are planktonic. Therefore, the larvae have the potential to disperse, but the degree of dispersal potential depends primarily on the period of the larval stage, which is only 8–12 days in A. ocellaris. In this study, we investigated the genetic population structure and gene flow in A. ocellaris across the Indo‐Malay Archipelago by analysing a fragment of the mitochondrial control region. Population genetic analysis, using amova , revealed a significant and high overall ΦST‐value of 0.241 (P < 0.001), clearly showing limited gene flow. Haplotype network analysis detected eight distinct clades corresponding mainly to different geographical areas, which were most probably separated during sea level low stands in the Pleistocene. The distribution of the clades among the different populations indicated slow partial re‐mixing mainly in the central region of the archipelago. Major surface currents seem to facilitate larval dispersal, indicated by higher connectivity along major surface currents in the region (e.g. Indonesian Throughflow). Four main groups were found by the hierarchical amova within the archipelago. These different genetic lineages should be managed and protected as separate ornamental fishery stocks and resource contributing to the genetic diversity of the area. Regarding the high diversity and the differentiation among areas within the Indo‐Malay Archipelago of A. ocellaris populations, the centre‐of‐origin theory is supported to be the main mechanism by which the high biodiversity evolved in this area.  相似文献

In order to study the genetic diversity and structure in the population of Vitellaria paradoxa, we characterized eight polymorphic microsatellite loci. Primers to amplify these loci were tested on 169 individual trees representing a sample of the population of shea tree in Mali. The loci were all polymorphic with a number of alleles between three to nine and with observed level of heterozygosity ranging from 0.035 to 0.507. These markers will be useful for genetic and ecological studies of this species.  相似文献

Predation is a major cause of nest failure in many bird species. High levels of nest loss may be a consequence of habitat fragmentation, leading to increased amounts of edge habitat. Yet the evidence for generally high nest predation rates along edges in fragmented landscapes is ambiguous. Using real nests of Reed Buntings Emberiza schoeniclus in which artificial Reed Bunting and real Japanese Quail Coturnix japonica eggs were placed, we experimentally tested for edge effects on nest predation in highly fragmented reed Phragmites sp. habitats in the Swiss lowlands. We also examined seasonal patterns of predation and the impacts of nest visits by observers. We found evidence for an edge effect at the water-sided reed edge, with nests located closer to the water being more likely to be predated than those further away. Predation probability increased from early to late season, suggesting that nest predation may be density dependent. Probability of nest predation was only weakly influenced by whether or not a nest was visited. Our results suggest that the intensive reed management currently applied in Swiss nature reserves may result in unnaturally high levels of nest losses in the Reed Bunting, because reed bands are not wide enough to allow nest placement at a safe distance from reed edges.  相似文献

In the temperate north-western Mediterranean Sea, large-scale disease outbreaks in benthic invertebrate species have recently occurred during climatic anomalies characterized by elevated seawater temperatures. One of the most affected species was the red gorgonian Paramuricea clavata , a key species of highly diverse communities dwelling in dim-lit habitats in the Mediterranean. From diseased P. clavata colonies, we isolated culturable bacteria associated to tissue lesions in order to investigate their potential as pathogens. Inoculation of four bacterial isolates onto healthy P. clavata in aquaria caused disease signs similar to those observed during the 2003 mortality event. The infection process was dependent on elevated seawater temperatures, in a range of values consistent with recordings performed in the field during the climatic anomalies. Among the four isolates, we identified a Vibrio coralliilyticus strain that showed virulence to P. clavata . This strain was re-isolated from diseased colonies during the experimentations. V. coralliilyticus has been previously identified as a thermodependent pathogen of a tropical coral species, emphasizing a causal role of this infectious agent in the P. clavata disease. Taking into consideration predicted global warming over the coming decades, a better understanding of the factors and mechanisms that affect the disease process will be of critical importance in predicting future threats to temperate gorgonians communities in the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

Many of the flowers produeed bv a plant fail to mature seeds despite effective pollination. The role of inflorescence architecture governing patterns of abortion in plants has been underestimated. 1 he inflorescence of Echium vulgare L. comprises a raceme bearing lateral inflorescences, each of which is cymosc. Within each cyme, there is a correlation between the proximity of a flower to the main axis and its order of flowering; and (lie probability of it maturing seeds. These findings appear to result from a decrease in the availability of maternal resources as the flowering period progresses. No relationship could be shown between the position of the cyme on the main inflorescence and the number of seeds set per flower although position was correlated with the length of the cyme, the number of (lowers and the length of the subtending bract. The mctamcric units of E. vulgare appear to function largely independently in their assimilation of resources. Larger cymes not only bear more flowers, but also draw on a larger area of photosynthetic tissue for resources. This hypothesis is supported by the removal of the bract or of part of the cyme at the onset of flowering; cymes without bracts mature fewer ovules than controls while decapitated cymes mature a greater proportion of ovules.  相似文献

Hermaphrodite freshwater snails offer the opportunity to study the evolution of selling and outcrossing. Laboratory studies using genetic markers have shown that selling is possible in all species investigated, although outcrossing seems to be favoured in most. Predominance of outcrossing is promoted by sperm storing for up to several months. Studies using electrophoretic markers also suggest that outcrossing is the main breeding system in natural populations. However, heterozygote deficiencies found in some populations could indicate (partial) selfing. The evolution of self-fertilization and cross-fertilization is driven by numerous forces. Inbreeding depression is thought to select for outcrossing, and has been experimentally investigated in hermaphrodite freshwater snails. Other traits have evolved that prevent selfing. On the other hand, selfing could be selected under low density, or to preserve local adaptation, or when aphallic individuals occur within populations.  相似文献

The protoprotein aequorin was used in order to monitor Ca2+ transients in conditions where progesterone induced maturation was reversibly inhibited. Propionate but not isethionate Cl-free medium impaired both meiosis reinitiation and the Ca2+ transient, unless oocytes were returned to normal Cl-containing medium. Similar results were obtained with the protein synthesis inhibitor cycloheximide. In both cases, the incidence of germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) and the time schedule relating it to the Ca2+ surge appeared not very different from that found from control oocytes. The evidence suggests that both treatments act on the initial step by which progesterone triggers the intracellular Ca2+ release needed for maturation promoting factor (MPF) elaboration. No definitive conclusion can be reached however from these experiments concerning the need for protein synthesis during meiosis reinitiation.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 The solitary parasitoid Anagrus delicatus attacks hosts (plant-hopper eggs) that exist in distinct batches and that are readily detectable to the foraging parasitoid. However, Anagrus delicatus attacks only a small fraction of the available hosts within a batch of eggs and then disperses (Cronin & Strong, 1993a). Here we address the question: Why is A.delicatus abandoning seemingly high quality patches?
  • 2 A parasitoid with an imperfect ability to discriminate between unparasitized hosts and hosts that it has attacked earlier within the same patch experiences a risk of self-superparasitism when attacking multiple hosts within a single patch. Self-superparasitism can incur costs in the form of lost time and eggs. Early patch leaving can be favoured as a means of avoiding the costs of self-superparasitism.
  • 3 A simple static model demonstrates that patch leaving is favoured by low costs of travelling to a new patch, high error rates in discriminating previously self-parasitized hosts, and high levels of parasitism in the currently occupied patch.
  • 4 A more detailed dynamic state variable model, parameterized for A.delicatus, demonstrates that this parasitoid's seemingly enigmatic behaviour can be explained under our hypothesis. In order for this to be the case, we predicted that A.delicatus cannot recognize previously parasitized hosts. Subsequent to our prediction, Cronin & Strong (1993b) demonstrated that experienced A.delicatus do not avoid ovipositing in previously self-parasitized hosts.
  • 5 Optimal patch leaving rules can be highly sensitive to even very low host discrimination error rates, which may be widespread among parasitoids.
