Cichowolski, M., Pazos, P.J., Tunik, M.A. & Aguirre‐Urreta, M.B. 2011: An exceptional storm accumulation of nautilids in the Lower Cretaceous of the Neuquén Basin, Argentina. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 121–138. An exceptional accumulation of nautilid shells of the species Cymatoceras perstriatum (Steuer) is reported and described in the Lower Cretaceous Agrio Formation of the Neuquén Basin (west‐central Argentina). The bed represents a storm deposit in a shallow‐water environment within the mid‐ramp. The evidences of a storm‐related origin of the bed come from the petrographic analysis and taphonomic features of the shells, specially the sedimentary infill pattern. The shells are dispersed in patches within the stratum, without any orientation relative to the bedding plane. It is proposed that the shells were floating after the death of the animals, although most of them have an almost complete living chamber. The presence of some heavily encrusted shells suggests that there is a mixing of specimens with different drift times. A variety of factors related to the origin of such high number of nautilid shells are discussed, including a transgressive stand system tract, the possible existence of a gregarious behaviour, changes in salinity and wind directions. □Lower Cretaceous, Nautilids, Neuquén Basin, shell accumulation, storm deposit.  相似文献

1. Prior to pupation, lepidopteran larvae enter a wandering phase lasting up to 30 h before choosing a pupation site. Because stillness is important for concealment, this behaviour calls for an adaptive explanation. 2. The explanation most likely relates to the need to find a suitable pupation substrate, especially in terms of shelter from predation, and given that many predators and parasitoids use host plants as prey‐location cues, mortality probably decreases with distance from the host plant. Hence, remaining on the host includes a long‐term risk, while moving away from the host introduces an increased risk during locomotion. 3. Bivoltine species that overwinter in the pupal stage produce two kinds of pupae; non‐diapausing pupae from which adults emerge after 1–2 weeks, or diapausing pupae that overwinter with adults emerging after 8–10 months. 4. Given the hypothesis of distance‐from‐host‐plant‐related predation, this should select for phenotypic plasticity with larvae in the diapausing generation having a longer wandering phase than larvae under direct development, if there is a trade‐off between mortality during the wandering phase and accumulated mortality during winter. 5. Here this prediction is tested by studying the duration of the wandering period in larvae of the partially bivoltine swallowtail butterfly, Papilio machaon, under both developmental pathways. 6. The results are in agreement with the predictions and show that the larval wandering phase is approximately twice as long under diapause development. The authors suggest that the longer duration of the wandering phase in the diapause generation is a general phenomenon in Lepidoptera.  相似文献

1. The alternative state theory claims that shallow lakes may have either clear water, and be dominated by submerged macrophytes, or turbid water and be dominated by phytoplankton. Most evidence for this theory comes from studies in temperate or boreal regions of Europe. Because of differences in the strength of trophic interactions, such as in the pressure of zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton, this influential theory might not apply elsewhere. 2. Here, we test the theory for South American lakes, combining field data and Landsat satellite data. We studied the frequency distribution of primary producers and water transparency, looking for potential bimodality separating clear and turbid lakes. A bimodal distribution might be observed if there are indeed alternative states, although would not itself be sufficient evidence for the theory. Possible shifts between alternative states were analysed by comparing satellite data from 1987 to 2005. 3. In our field data, there was a bimodal pattern in phytoplankton abundance and possibly in the abundance of submerged macrophytes, but not in water transparency. Analyses of the larger satellite data set revealed bimodality in lake transparency in 2005, but less so in 1987. In 1987, the lakes were generally clearer, and the transition to higher turbidity was more gradual than in 2005. The stronger bimodality in the more recent data, and the overall lower transparency, could have been caused by an increase in fertiliser use and subsequent eutrophication but also by differences in hydrology. Further, 1987 was much wetter than 2005, which could have caused dilution of suspended particles, leading to clearer water. 4. While a bimodal distribution in the abundance of primary producers and water clarity is not decisive evidence for or against the theory of alternative states, our data clearly fail to refute it.  相似文献

We used radiotelemetric data and behavioural observations to characterize seasonal (mating versus post‐mating seasons) and sexual variation in movement patterns, as well as to examine some of the ecological factors contributing to the evolution of the mating system in a venomous predator from the Mojave Desert of North America, the speckled rattlesnake, Crotalus mitchellii. Mating occurs in spring from late April to early June, shortly after emergence from hibernation, when snakes are predictably aggregated around the dens. Males and females travelled further per unit time in the mating season compared to the post‐mating season. Males also travelled longer distances per unit time than females in the mating and post‐mating seasons, and males with larger home ranges during the mating season had more potential mating partners. The results obtained suggest that males actively locate females during the mating season, and that the drastic increase in distance travelled by males during the mating season may be caused by strong male–male competition for access to females, probably because of the limited availability of sexually receptive females. Furthermore, males fight for access to females, and males of larger size are more likely to acquire females. Therefore, sexual selection apparently acts on two different male phenotypic traits: investment in mate‐searching activities and male body size. The present study demonstrates that combining quantitative spatial analyses and behavioural observations in an explicit temporal context can significantly advance our understanding of the ecology and evolution of organismal mating systems. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 103 , 681–695.  相似文献

Vizcaíno, S.F., Blanco, R.E., Bender, J.B. & Milne, N. 2010: Proportions and function of the limbs of glyptodonts. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 93–101. This study examines the limb bone proportions and strength of glyptodonts (Xenarthra, Cingulata). Two methods are used to estimate the body mass and location of the centre of gravity of the articulated specimens. These estimates, together with measurements of the femur and humerus, are used to calculate strength indicators (SI). The other long bones of the limbs are used to calculate limb proportion indices that give an indication of digging ability, speed, and limb dominance in armadillos, the glyptodonts’ living closest relatives. The results show that regardless of how the body mass and centre of gravity are calculated, the majority of the glyptodont’s weight is borne by the hindlimbs. The SI calculations show that femora are sturdy enough to bear these loads. The fact that the femora have higher SI than the humerii indicates that sometimes the hindlimbs are required to bear an even greater proportion of the body weight, possibly when rising to a bipedal posture or pivoting on their hindlimbs to deliver a blow with their armoured tail. The analysis of limb proportions indicates that both the hindlimb and the forelimb have proportions that correlate strongly with body mass. This outcome supports the other results, but also shows that forelimbs must be also involved in manoeuvring the glyptodont body. □Glyptodonts, Mammalia, Xenarthra, limbs, strength indicators.  相似文献

Fractions of humic acids (HA-K+) of molecular mass between 500 and 300 000 and exceeding 300 000 showed a very high nitrite depleting ability, whereas the fraction of HA-K+ with molecular mass lower than 500 had little or no such effect. Autoclaving HA-K+ (121 °C, 20 min) decreased the nitrite-depleting ability to about a half. This observation correlates with the results of mutagenic studies in Arabidopsis thaliana, demonstrating the inhibitory effect of HA-K+ and its fractions on the formation of mutagenic N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) from the nitrosation mixture of N-methylurea and nitrite. Nonfractionated HA-K+ had no inhibitory effect towards the mutagenic activity of preformed direct acting MNU or towards the activation of the promutagen N-nitrosodimethylamine to a mutagenic product.  相似文献
