Ovarian activity and estrous behaviour were monitored through milk progesterone determinations and twice daily visual observations in 70 crossbred Brown Swiss x Nellore cows following natural service. Whole milk samples were collected on the day of estrus (Day 1), Day 11, and every 5 d thereafter until the next estrus or pregnancy confirmation. Seventy percent of the cows behaved as expected, i.e. they showed a 19-to 25-d interval between estrus and the next ovulation, or they became pregnant. Estrous cycles of regular length (18 to 24 d) were found in 54% of the cases. Prolonged luteal phases (interval from estrus to next ovulation > 28 d) were found in 15.7% of cows. Short estrous cycles (interestrous interval < 18 d) were found in 7.1% of the cases. Periods of acyclicity (basal progesterone levels for periods >/= 15 d) were found in 5.8% of the cases, and one cow exhibited estrus while pregnant and had a high progesterone concentration. Cows with a prolonged luteal phase and those with a short estrous cycle had an interval between ovulations of 35.0 +/- 6.7 d (x +/- SD) and 9.6 +/- 3.1 d, respectively. Signs of estrus were not detected in 33.3% of the ovulations confirmed by progesterone determinations. Low conception rates, failures in estrus detection and a high frequency of abnormal postbreeding luteal phases were found.  相似文献

The phenomenon of inbreeding depression is well documented and behavioral adaptations for inbreeding avoidance have been described. However, there is debate over whether inbreeding depression is always an important selective force on behavior. Here, we summarize recent evidence for inbreeding depression under natural conditions, review inbreeding avoidance mechanisms, and discuss how these are influenced by social structure. Seven detector packages consisting of plastic nuclear track detectors, nuclear emulsions and thermoluminescence dosimeters were exposed in different locations inside BIORACK during the IML2 mission. The detectors supplement each other in their registration characteristics and cover well the different contributions of the space radiations to the dose. In this report, results are given on total dose measurements, cosmic ray flux and neutron dose. Total doses differ by up to a factor of 1.5 and heavy ion fluxes by more than a factor of 6 in the different locations. The results are compared with those of previous missions. The mission equivalent dose for the astronauts was calculated from the measurements to be 3.8 mSv.  相似文献

The gravitational pressure model is based on studies of tension and compression of the plasma membrane against the extracellular matrix. Even in the absence of the classical Ti plasmid-encoded cytokinin biosynthetic genes ipt and tzs, Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains still release significant amounts of the cytokinin isopentenyladenine (iP) into the culture medium (R.W. Kaiss-Chapman and R.O. Morris [1977] Biochem Biophys Res Commun 76: 453-459). A potential source of the iP is isopentenylated transfer RNA (tRNA), which, in turn, is synthesized by the activity of tRNA:isopentenyltransferase encoded by the bacterial miaA gene. To determine whether secreted iP had its origin in isopentenylated tRNA, a miaA- deletion/insertion mutant was prepared and reconstructed in Agrobacterium tumefaciens in vivo. The mutant no longer possessed tRNA:isopentenylation activity and no longer released iP into the extracellular medium. Transfer RNA therefore makes a small but significant contribution to the total amount of cytokinin normally secreted by Agrobacterium strains. tRNA-mediated synthesis may also account for cytokinin production by other plant-associated bacteria, such as Rhizobia, that have been reported to secrete similarly low levels of nonhydroxylated cytokinins.  相似文献

The effect of short-term nitrate application (10 mM, 0-4 d) on nitrogenase (N2ase) activity, antioxidant defenses, and related parameters was investigated in pea (Pisum sativum L. cv Frilene) nodules. The response of nodules to nitrate comprised two stages. In the first stage (0-2 d), there were major decreases in N2ase activity and N2ase-linked respiration and concomitant increases in carbon cost of N2ase and oxygen diffusion resistance of nodules. There was no apparent oxidative damage, and the decline in N2ase activity was, to a certain extent, reversible. The second stage (>2 d) was typical of a senescent, essentially irreversible process. It was characterized by moderate increases in oxidized proteins and catalytic Fe and by major decreases in antioxidant enzymes and metabolites. The restriction in oxygen supply to bacteroids may explain the initial decline in N2ase activity. The decrease in antioxidant protection is not involved in this process and is not specifically caused by nitrate, since it also occurs with drought stress. However, comparison of nitrate- and drought-induced senescence shows an important difference: there is no lipid degradation or lipid peroxide accumulation with nitrate, indicating that lipid peroxidation is not necessarily involved in nodule senescence.  相似文献
