Aspects of life-history, oviposition and microdistribution within beds of Ranunculus penicillatus var. calcareus (R. W. Butcher) C.D.K. Cook are considered. Brachycentrus subnubilus Curtis has one generation each year, with five larval instars. Larvae favour sites beneath the weedbeds for most of the year, migrating to more exposed areas in the spring to pupate. Pupation, emergence, oviposition and eclosion are completed in just over two months. Eggs are usually laid on submerged marginal vegetation but any semi-submerged object may be utilized. Larvae appear to disperse mainly as first instars; in this they are likely to be seriously affected by weedcutting activities. Initial development is rapid to fourth instar. Larvae overwinter as fifth instars. Sex ratios show a predominance of males. 相似文献

Although calcium supplements are widely used in the treatment of osteoporosis, their beneficial effect is not conclusively established. We now report some effects of a calcium supplement (1 g/day) given for 6 to 12 weeks to 15 postmenopausal osteoporotic women. The mean fasting urinary hydroxyproline/creatinine ratio decreased from 0.021 +/- 0.002 to 0.015 +/- 0.001 (P less than 0.0025), indicating a significant reduction in bone resorption. The mean plasma alkaline phosphatase fell from 123 +/- 5 U/l to 104 +/- 3.1 U/l (P less than 0.01), probably representing some secondary reduction in bone formation following the inhibition of bone resorption. These results support the concept that calcium supplementation is useful in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. 相似文献

32 West African dwarf goats were exposed in respiration chambers to temperature treatments of 20, 25, 30, 35, 35, 35, 30, 25, 20°C. Each treatment lasted three days. 16 goats were kept in individual pens (I); the others in two group pens of eight animals each (G). During each treatment, heat production and activity were recorded continuously over 48 hours. In addition, feed and water intake, rectal temperature, skin temperature and respiratory rate were measured during each treatment.Compared to 20°C, at 35°C rectal temperature increased from 39.0°C to 39.9°C, respiratory rate from 30 to 260 times. min–1 and skin temperature from 37.1°C to 39.5°C. Hay intake decreased by 40%; concentrates (30 g. kg–0.75. d–1) were always completely consumed. Heat production was higher for the G animals at 20°C and higher for the I animals at 35°C. These differences in heat production between the two groups were reflected in differences in rectal and skin temperature and in respiratory rate but only very slightly in differences in hay intake.Tissue insulation was 0.014 K. m2. W–1 at 30°C and 35°C and 0.022 K. m2. W–1 at 20°C.It is concluded that the reactions of these dwarf goats to high ambient temperatures are not different in principle from those of other domestic ruminants and that they do not exhibit a specific suitability or unsuitability for ambient temperatures as prevailing in West Africa. 相似文献

The kinetic behavior and spectroscopic characteristics of the nucleotide site(s) of lipoamide dehydrogenase have been investigated. Both subunits of the dimeric enzyme interact with NAD+. The binding of NAD+ is associated with a negative trough around 420-450 nm and a positive peak at 507 nm of the difference spectrum. The transhydrogenation between NADH and thionicotinamide nucleotide or acetylpyridine nucleotide is shown to proceed via a Ping Pong or an ordered Bi Bi mechanism, respectively, at pH above 7.0. Lowering pH or acetamidation lose the spectral characteristic of the positive peak of the enzyme-NAD+ complex with a concurrent change in the kinetic mechanism in the NADH+-acetylpyridine nucleotide transhydrogenation. 相似文献

The authors report retrospective data on analysis of amniotic fluid DFTN markers (AFP and AChE) from 306 cases. Data were obtained from 261 amniocentesis done because there was a recurrence risk of DFTN and from 45 amniocentesis done because an anomaly as DFTN was diagnosed with ultrasonography. Results first show that the risk of recurrence is 3.03% in Rh?ne-Alpes area. In utero exposure to valproate appears as new indication for amniocentesis, in view of the possible association between Spina-Bifida and prenatal-valproate exposure (1/8 in the study). In contrast to anencephaly, Spina Bifida can be difficult to diagnose with ultrasonography before 20 weeks and require amniocentesis with AFP and AChE study. 相似文献

The response of tumours to hyperthermia was tested by giving graded heat treatments and assessing local control at 90 days. Mice were divided into three groups which were pre-treated for 3 days in ambient temperatures of 4, 21 or 35 degrees C. This enabled the mean tumour resting temperature to be varied by up to 11 degrees C, before subsequent heat treatment. For the heat treatments, the tumours were clamped in order to eliminate blood flow, resulting in uniform temperature distributions and hence more uniform thermal sensitivity. TCD50 values were used to construct Arrhenius plots. For all three pre-treatment temperatures, these plots demonstrated a factor of 1.6 increase in heating time per degree Celsius reduction in heating temperature. However, tumours kept in a 4 degrees C environment before treatment were more thermally sensitive than those kept in 21 degrees C conditions, while those in a 35 degrees C environment were more resistant. Pretreatment at 4 degrees C was equivalent to an increase of either 0.5 degree C in heating temperature or 28 per cent in heating time, compared with pre-treatment at 21 degrees C. Pre-treatment at 35 degrees C was equivalent to a reduction of either 0.6 degree C in heating temperature or 25 per cent in heating time. These data indicate that the pre-treatment tumour temperature is an important parameter, but the effect of heat treatment is more closely related to absolute heating temperature rather than to the increase in temperature above the normal resting level. 相似文献

The mechanism by which acidophilic bacteria generate and maintain their cytoplasmic pH close to neutrality was investigated. For this purpose we determined the components of proton motive force in the eubacterium Bacillus acidocaldarius and the archaebacterium Thermoplasma acidophilum. After correction for probe binding, the proton motive force of untreated cells was 190 to 240 mV between external pH 2 and 4. Anoxia diminished total proton motive force and the transmembrane pH difference by 60 to 80 mV. The protonophore 2,4-dinitrophenol abolished the total proton motive force almost completely and diminished the transmembrane pH difference by at least two units. However, even after correction for probe binding, protonophore-treated cells maintained a pH difference of approximately one unit. 相似文献

Hooks of the flagella of Salmonella typhimurium were purified from an flaL mutant. Hook-associated proteins, namely HAP1, HAP2, and HAP3, were separated from them, and the antibody against each HAP was prepared. By immunoelectron microscopic observation, these three kinds of antiHAP antibodies were found to bind on the distal ends of hooks of filamentless mutants consistently with their composition of HAPs. The antiHAP2 antibody bound to the very tops of the claw-shaped ends of the hooks which contain all three HAPS. The antibodies against HAP1 and HAP3 bound to the basal areas and the middle areas, respectively, of the claw-shaped ends. The order of disassembly of the component proteins by heat treatment of the hook structure from the filamentless mutants was (HAP2, HAP3) greater than HAP1 greater than hook protein. These observations were consistent with our layered structure model: HAP1, HAP3, and HAP2 are assembled at the distal end of the hook in this sequence. All three HAPs were detected in the hook-filament complexes prepared from a flagellate strain. When the hook-filament structure was treated with antibody against HAP1 and with the anti-rabbit immunoglobulin G antibody, the antibody aggregate was observed in the region corresponding to the boundary between filament and hook. This observation strongly suggests that HAP1 is the protein connecting filament with hook. The locations of HAP2 and HAP3 in the hook-filament structure were not clarified with the same procedure. 相似文献
