As a result of support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, schistosomiasis and intestinal or soil-transmitted helminth infections have been the subject of national control programmes in three Eastern and Southern African countries: Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania and Zambia. Here, we review the significant progress made in their control efforts and highlight the different approaches being adopted to ensure programme effectiveness and sustainability. Although a positive start has been made to reduce morbidity resulting from schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminth infections in these countries, it is imperative that support is identified to sustain the programmes until these infections are no longer a public health problem and children can therefore be given a healthy start to life. 相似文献

Abstract The relationship between traits that compete for resources is influenced by variance in the acquisition and allocation of resources. The difficulty of accurately measuring these underlying physiological processes has hampered studies of resource-based trade-offs. Here, we explore the ability of principal components analysis (PCA) to extract axes corresponding to acquisition and allocation in a bivariate trade-off by comparing these axes to estimates obtained using physiological measurements. We validate the method using simulations and then test it using empirical data for the well-characterized trade-off between flight capability and reproduction in female sand crickets, Gryllus firmus. We find a high correspondence between our physiological estimates and the estimates obtained using PCA. Our results demonstrate that PCA provides a robust and efficient method for estimating acquisition and allocation directly from the traits involved in a resource-based trade-off. 相似文献

The formation of a heterotetrameric complex between annexin 2 (anx 2) and S100A10 plays an important role in regulating the cellular distribution and biochemical properties of anx 2. A major distinction between the anx 2-S100A10 complex and other annexin-S100 complexes is that S100A10 binding to anx 2 occurs independently of calcium. Here we describe a cyclic 3',5'-adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA, EC 2.7.1.37)-dependent mechanism regulating anx 2-S100A10 complex formation and its interaction with the transient receptor potential vanilloid type 6 channel (TRPV6) in airway and gut epithelia. In both 16HBE14o- and Caco-2 cells, forskolin (FSK) stimulated increased anx 2-S100A10 complex formation, which was attenuated by either PKA inhibitors or calcineurin A (CnA) inhibitors. The anx 2-S100A10 complex association with TRPV6 was dependent on FSK-induced CnA-dependent dephosphorylation of anx 2. Analysis of the significance of the cAMP/PKA/CnA pathway on calcium influx showed that both PKA and CnA inhibitors attenuated Ca(45) uptake in Caco-2, but not 16HBE14o-, cells. Thus, the cAMP/PKA/CnA-induced anx 2-S100A10/TRPV6 complex may require additional factors for calcium influx or play a role independent of calcium influx in airway epithelia. In conclusion, our data demonstrates that cAMP/PKA/CnA signalling is important for anx 2-S100A10 complex formation and interaction with target molecules in both absorptive and secretory epithelia. 相似文献

Sexual size dimorphism is assumed to be adaptive and is expected to evolve in response to a difference in the net selection pressures on the sexes. Although a demonstration of sexual selection is neither necessary nor sufficient to explain the evolution of sexual size dimorphism, sexual selection is generally assumed to be a major evolutionary force. If contemporary sexual selection is important in the evolution and maintenance of sexual size dimorphism then we expect to see concordance between patterns of sexual selection and patterns of sexual dimorphism. We examined sexual selection in the wild, acting on male body size, and components of body size, in the waterstrider Aquarius remigis, as part of a long term study examining net selection pressures on the two sexes in this species. Selection was estimated on both a daily and annual basis. Since our measure of fitness (mating success) was behavioral, we estimated reliabilities to determine if males perform consistently. Reliabilities were measured as ? statistics and range from fair to perfect agreement with substantial agreement overall. We found significant univariate sexual selection favoring larger total length in the first year of our study but not in the second. Multivariate analysis of components of body size revealed that sexual selection for larger males was not acting directly on total length but on genital length. Sexual selection for larger male body size was opposed by direct selection favoring smaller midfemoral lengths. While males of this species are smaller than females, they have longer genital segments and wider forefemora. Patterns of contemporary sexual selection and sexual size dimorphism agree only for genital length. For total length, and all other components of body size examined, contemporary sexual selection was either nonsignificant or opposed the pattern of size dimporhism. Thus, while the net pressures of contemporary selection for the species may still act to maintain sexual size dimorphism, sexual selection alone does not. 相似文献

Conditions have been devised for the quantitative precipitation of the branched fraction in starches by concanavalin A and the enzymic estimation of the -
-glucan in this and the soluble components. For some starches, such as those from cereal and high-amylose pea seeds, the percentage of branched fraction determined by this procedure was higher than that calculated by deducting from one hundred the apparent amylose content as measured by potentiometric iodine titration, suggesting a method for estimating the content of material having an atypical structure in the whole starch. The procedure has been adapted to provide a preparative method of separating amylose and amylopectin fractions. It efficiently separated these in starches that cannot be fully fractionated by complexing with 1-butanol, such as those from high-amylose pea seeds and tobacco leaves. 相似文献
