Trait selection in flowering plants: how does sexual selection contribute?   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
By highlighting and merging the frameworks of sexual selectionenvisioned by Arnold (1994) and Murphy (1998), we discuss howsexual selection can occur in plants even though individualsdo not directly interact. We review studies on traits that influencepollen export and receipt in a variety of hermaphroditic andgynodioecious plants with the underlying premise that pollinationdynamics influences mate acquisition. Most of the studies reviewedfound that phenotypes that enhance pollen export are in harmonywith those that enhance pollen receipt suggesting that in manycases pollinator visitation rates limit both male and femalefunction. In contrast, fewer traits were under opposing selection;but when they were, the traits most often were associated withenhancing the specific aspects of a given sex function. Ourreview helps clarify and illustrate why sexual selection canbe a component of trait evolution in hermaphrodite plants.  相似文献

The reproductive success of the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus), an invasive fish, may be mediated by the use of pheromones. We hypothesized that reproductive male (RM) round gobies release sex pheromone to which reproductive females (RF) respond. In this study, we compared behavioural and electrophysiological responses of reproductive and non-reproductive female round gobies to conspeci fic males. Results of behavioural experiments in the laboratory showed that RF spent significantly more time near the source of the male odour compared with odours from control water. However, RF did not distinguish between odours from non-reproductive male (non-RM) water and control water. Non-reproductive females (non-RF) were not attracted to odours released from RM or non-RM water. Results of electro-olfactogram (EOG) responses showed that both RF and non-RF discriminated between HPLC fractionated RM and non-RM odours. However, the EOG responses of RF were about eight-fold higher than non-RF exposed to RM odours. These findings confirm that RM round gobies release a pheromone signal that attracts RF. The results of this research may be useful in developing control strategy using natural pheromones to disrupt the reproductive behaviour of the invasive round goby and to curtail its effects on native species. Seasonal and annual movements of Australian waterbirds are generally more complex than those of their Northern Hemisphere counterparts, and long-term data are needed to understand their relationships with climatic variables. This paper explores a long-term (1973–2002) set of waterbird counts from coastal Victoria and relates them to climatic data at local and continental scales. Three species (Black Swan Cygnus atratus, White-faced Heron Egretta novaehollandiae and Grey Teal Anas gracilis) were chosen for this analysis. Black Swans have large local breeding populations near the study region; White-faced Herons have smaller local breeding populations and Grey Teal breed extensively in ephemeral inland floodplains, such as those in the Murray-Darling Basin. All showed significant relationships with streamflow, regional rainfall and the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) at appropriate scales and time-lags, with streamflow explaining the most variance. Black Swans showed a strong seasonal cycle in abundance and local climate variables had the greatest influence on the counts. Numbers were positively correlated with streamflow in southern Victoria three to six seasons before each count. Broader-scale climatic patterns were more important for the other two species. Numbers of White-faced Herons were positively correlated with streamflow or rainfall over various parts of Australia seven to nine seasons before each count. Numbers of Grey Teal showed weak seasonal cycles, and were negatively correlated with rainfall in Victoria or the Murray-Darling Basin in the seasons before or during each count, and positively with streamflow in the Murray-Darling Basin 15–18 months before each count.  相似文献

Trypanosoma brucei gambiense infection is an important public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa. This parasitic disease is difficult to diagnose due to insidious clinical signs and transient parasitaemias. The clinical course is marked by two stages of increasing disease severity. An early systemic parasitic invasion is followed by the development of a progressive meningo-encephalitis. During this latter stage, a broad spectrum of neurological signs appears, which finally lead to a demyelinating and fatal stage if untreated. Treatment is toxic and difficult to administer when the CNS is invaded. Therefore, accurate diagnostic methods for stage determination are needed. The classically used criteria are not sufficiently specific and mechanisms of parasite invasion through the blood-brain barrier remain poorly understood. As cytokines/chemokines are involved in the early recruitment of leukocytes into the CNS, this study has focused on their potential value to define the onset of CNS involvement. Levels of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1/CCL-2, macrophage inflammatory protein-1α/CCL-3, IL-8/CXCL-8, regulated upon activation T cell expressed and secreted (RANTES)/CCL-5 and IL-1β were measured in paired sera and CSF from 57 patients and four controls. Patients were classified into three groups (stage 1, intermediate and stage 2) according to current field criteria for stage determination (CSF cell count, presence of trypanosomes in CSF and neurological signs). In sera, cytokine/chemokine levels were poorly related to disease stage. Only CXCL-8 was higher in stage 1 patients when compared with stage 2 and CCL-5 was higher in controls when compared with patients. In contrast, in CSF the expression of the selected cytokines, except CCL-5, was associated with the presence of neurological signs, demonstrating their diagnostic value. We observed a relationship between the presence of trypanosomes or trypanosome-related compounds in CSF and levels of IL-1β, CXCL-8, CCL-2 and CCL-3. These cytokines and chemokines may be triggered by the parasite and hence are potential markers of CNS invasion.  相似文献

RGC axons extend in the optic tracts in a manner that correlates with the expression in the hypothalamus and epithalamus of a soluble factor inhibitory to RGC axon outgrowth. Additionally, although the RGC axons extend adjacent to the telencephalon, they do not normally grow into this tissue. Here, we show that slit1 and slit2, known chemorepellents for RGC axons expressed in specific regions of the diencephalon and telencephalon, help regulate optic tract development. In mice lacking slit1 and slit2, a subset of RGC axons extend into the telencephalon and grow along the pial surface but not more deeply into this tissue. Surprisingly, distinct guidance errors occur in the telencephalon of slit1 -/-; slit2 +/- and slit1/2 -/- embryos, suggesting that the precise level of Slits is critical for determining the path followed by individual axons. In mice lacking both slit1 and slit2, a subset of RGC axons also project aberrantly into the epithalamus, pineal and across the dorsal midline. However, many axons reach their primary target, the superior colliculus. This demonstrates that Slits play an important role in directing the guidance of post-crossing RGC axons within the optic tracts but are not required for target innervation.  相似文献

The purpose of this work was to establish a methodology to enable the isolation and study of osteocytes from skeletally mature young (4-month-old) and old (22-month-old) mice. The location of osteocytes deep within bone is ideal for their function as mechanosensors. However, this location makes the observation and study of osteocytes in vivo technically difficult. Osteocytes were isolated from murine long bones through a process of extended collagenase digestions combined with EDTA-based decalcification. A tissue homogenizer was used to reduce the remaining bone fragments to a suspension of bone particles, which were placed in culture to yield an outgrowth of osteocyte-like cells. All of the cells obtained from this outgrowth that displayed an osteocyte-like morphology stained positive for the osteocyte marker E11/GP38. The osteocyte phenotype was further confirmed by a lack of staining for alkaline phosphatase and the absence of collagen1a1 expression. The outgrowth of osteocytes also expressed additional osteocyte-specific genes such as Sost and Mepe. This technique facilitates the isolation of osteocytes from skeletally mature bone. This novel enabling methodology should prove useful in advancing our understanding of the roles mature osteocytes play in bone health and disease.  相似文献

The inheritance of flower color in pea (Pisum sativum) has been studied for more than a century, but many of the genes corresponding to these classical loci remain unidentified. Anthocyanins are the main flower pigments in pea. These are generated via the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway, which has been studied in detail and is well conserved among higher plants. A previous proposal that the Clariroseus (B) gene of pea controls hydroxylation at the 5' position of the B ring of flavonoid precursors of the anthocyanins suggested to us that the gene encoding flavonoid 3',5'-hydroxylase (F3'5'H), the enzyme that hydroxylates the 5' position of the B ring, was a good candidate for B. In order to test this hypothesis, we examined mutants generated by fast neutron bombardment. We found allelic pink-flowered b mutant lines that carried a variety of lesions in an F3'5'H gene, including complete gene deletions. The b mutants lacked glycosylated delphinidin and petunidin, the major pigments present in the progenitor purple-flowered wild-type pea. These results, combined with the finding that the F3'5'H gene cosegregates with b in a genetic mapping population, strongly support our hypothesis that the B gene of pea corresponds to a F3'5'H gene. The molecular characterization of genes involved in pigmentation in pea provides valuable anchor markers for comparative legume genomics and will help to identify differences in anthocyanin biosynthesis that lead to variation in pigmentation among legume species.  相似文献
