Aim Reconstructing the introduction history of exotic species is critical to understanding ecological and evolutionary processes that underlie invasive spread and to designing strategies that prevent or manage invasions. The aims of this study were to infer the introduction history of the invasive apomictic bunchgrass Cortaderia jubata and to determine if molecular data support the postulated horticultural origin of invasive populations. Location Invaded areas in the USA (California, Maui) and New Zealand; native areas in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. Methods We used nuclear microsatellite markers to genotype 281 plants from invaded areas in California, Maui and New Zealand, and 77 herbarium specimens from native South America, and compared the genotypic and clonal variation of C. jubata from the invaded and native ranges. Clonal diversity was determined from genotypic diversity using two analytical methods. Results Invasive C. jubata from invaded regions in California, Maui and New Zealand consisted of the same single clone that probably originated from a single introduced genotype. In contrast, 14 clones were detected in herbarium specimens from the native areas of Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. The invasive clone matched the most common clone identified in herbarium specimens from southern Ecuador where horticultural stock is presumed to have originated. Main conclusions The lack of clonal and genotypic diversity in invasive plants, but moderately high diversity detected in native plants, indicates a significant reduction in genetic variation associated with the introduction of C. jubata outside of its native range. Based on historical accounts of the horticultural introduction of C. jubata and the results of this study, a severe founder effect probably occurred during deliberate introduction of C. jubata into cultivation. Our results are consistent with the postulated horticultural origin of invasive C. jubata and point to southern Ecuador as the geographical source of invasive populations. 相似文献

Spatial and non-spatial serial discrimination reversal performance was investigated in guinea pigs over eleven reversals. Difference in learning ability between albino and pigmented strains was not evident on spatial or non-spatial SDR tasks. The guinea pigs' ability to learn rapidly successive spatial and non-spatial reversals with increasing proficiency corresponds well with previous published findings using other mammalian species. These studies also demonstrated behavioural research with the guinea pig to require extended periods of intensive experimental management. 相似文献

A renal transplant recipient who was rapidly losing his vision due to cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis was treated with transfer factor (TF). TF was prepared from lymphocytes of a subject with CMV mononucleosis who had cell-mediated immunity to CMV as assayed by lymphocyte transformation ([3H] thymidine uptake) and migration inhibitory factor (MIF) production. Within 2 mo of initiation of TF therapy, all of the patient's foci of retinal inflammation became inactive. This was his second episode of acute retinitis within 4 yr. The first one required reduction in the dose of immunosuppressants to achieve remission, whereas during the present exacerbation, immunosuppressants were maintained at a pre-TF therapy dosage. It is of interest that immediately after initiation of TF, a previously quiescent area of retinitis became inflamed; however, after several additional doses of TF, this reactivation subsided. In addition, the patient developed (though transiently) a positive delayed skin test to one of the antigens (SK-SD) to which the donor of the TF was sensitive, and although lymphocyte transformation by CMV antigen remained negative, there was evidence of MIF production. Finally, the patient's urine CMV titer declined from persistently high titers of 103.5 to 104.5 TCID50 to a titer of 100.5 TCID50, which was the lowest observed during the 4 yr of study. We conclude that it is unlikely that these findings were due to chance. TF should receive wider clinical trials in certain viral infections, particularly in immunosuppressed hosts. 相似文献

All organisms possess DNA repair pathways that are used to maintain the integrity of their genetic material. Although many DNA repair pathways are well understood, new pathways continue to be discovered. Here, we report an antibiotic specific DNA repair pathway in Bacillus subtilis that is composed of a previously uncharacterized helicase (mrfA) and exonuclease (mrfB). Deletion of mrfA and mrfB results in sensitivity to the DNA damaging agent mitomycin C, but not to any other type of DNA damage tested. We show that MrfAB function independent of canonical nucleotide excision repair, forming a novel excision repair pathway. We demonstrate that MrfB is a metal‐dependent exonuclease and that the N‐terminus of MrfB is required for interaction with MrfA. We determined that MrfAB failed to unhook interstrand cross‐links in vivo, suggesting that MrfAB are specific to the monoadduct or the intrastrand cross‐link. A phylogenetic analysis uncovered MrfAB homologs in diverse bacterial phyla, and cross‐complementation indicates that MrfAB function is conserved in closely related species. B. subtilis is a soil dwelling organism and mitomycin C is a natural antibiotic produced by the soil bacterium Streptomyces lavendulae. The specificity of MrfAB suggests that these proteins are an adaptation to environments with mitomycin producing bacteria. 相似文献

Whether human fetal skeletal remains exhibit sexual dimorphism has been the subject of considerable debate. Most attention in this debate has focused on the greater sciatic notch of the ilium, since it is a gross morphological characteristic with known sex differences in the adult and is easily seen in fetal skeletal remains. Unfortunately, previous traditional morphometric analyses of the fetal sciatic notch have led to ambiguous results. The purpose of this study is to determine whether differences between the sexes can be discerned when modern morphometric techniques are applied to the fetal sciatic notch. Photographs of the ventral side of 133 fetal ilia of known age and sex from the Trotter Collection of Washington University were digitized, and the trace coordinates used for all subsequent analyses. The results of the analysis demonstrate that there is significant sexual dimorphism in the anterior to posterior location of the maximum depth of the sciatic notch, but that the depth of the notch itself is not dimorphic. While there is significant sexual dimorphism in the shape of the sciatic notch, the amount of overlap between males and females is too great for the sciatic notch to be used as a reliable indicator of sex. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Many Gossypium interspecific hybrids that involve G. klotzschianum result in either embryo or seedling lethals. Histologically, lethal symptoms are characterized by necrotic cells and tumors that appear 10–15 days after fertilization in the embryo lethals and at the first true-leaf stage in the seedling lethals. Ultrastructural studies of cell necrosis in seedling lethals show that the first subcellular abnormality is the degeneration of the inner membrane and cristae of the mitochondria. Mitochondrial degeneration is essentially complete before other organelles show evidence of structural aberrations. 相似文献
