Apparent egg cannibalism was investigated in the beach‐spawning California grunion Leuresthes tenuis. Three hypotheses were tested to determine whether L. tenuis regularly consumes and efficiently digests conspecific eggs. First, examination of the gut contents of adults collected at four spawning sites over two seasons showed that the intestines of most fish from all the sites (57–87%, n ≥ 30, each site) contained L. tenuis eggs. The two other hypotheses focused on digestion of the eggs. First, the force required to crush cannibalized eggs was significantly less than that for uncannibalized eggs (fertilized or unfertilized), indicating that ingestion weakens the egg chorions. Second, conspecific eggs fed to fish held in the laboratory visibly degraded as they passed through the gut. The eggs lost c. half of their protein content and about two‐thirds of their lipid content as they passed from proximal to distal regions of the gut, indicating that digestion occurred. Digestive enzyme activities of the gut further confirmed that L. tenuis can break down the contents of ingested eggs. Trypsin activity decreased and aminopeptidase activity increased posteriorly along the gut, whereas amylase and lipase activities exhibited less clear patterns by gut region. As far as is known, this study is the first to show that L. tenuis is an egg cannibal.  相似文献

Although many studies have documented codon usage bias in different species, the importance of codon usage in a phylogenetic framework remains largely unknown. We demonstrate that a phylogenetic signal is present in the codon usage and non‐usage biases of 17 717 orthologues evaluated across 72 tetrapod species using a simple parsimony analysis of a binary matrix of codon characters. Phylogenies estimated using stop codons were more congruent with previous hypotheses than phylogenies based on any other single codon or a combination of codons. Although each codon is present in every species, specific genes have different codon preferences and may or may not use every possible codon. This observation allowed us to map the pattern of codon usage and non‐usage across the topology. These results suggest that codon usage is phylogenetically conserved across shallow and deep levels within tetrapods.  相似文献

G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) respond to external stimuli by activating heterotrimeric G proteins inside the cell. There is increasing evidence that many GPCRs exist as dimers or higher oligomers, but the biochemical nature of such dimers and what roles they have, if any, in signal transduction remains unclear. We conducted a comprehensive study of dimerization of the 5HT2c serotonin receptor using disulphide-trapping experiments. We found a dimer interface between transmembrane (TM) helices IV and V that is markedly sensitive to the state of receptor activation. This dimer seems to be quasisymmetrical in interfacial geometry and asymmetrical in its association with its cognate G alpha protein. We also found a second interface at TM I helices, which is insensitive to the state of activation.  相似文献

Alginates are of considerable interest in the fields of biotechnology and biomedical engineering. To enable the control of properties generally not possible with the native polymer, we have chemically modified alginate with dialdehyde via acid-catalyzed acetalization. The kinetics of acetalization measured through equilibrium swelling of the networked polymer were found to undergo a zero- and second-order reaction with respect to alginate and dialdehyde, respectively. With the determined rate constant of 19.06 microL x mole(-1) x s(-1) at 40 degrees C and activation energy of 78.58 kJ x mol(-1), a proposed predictive reaction model may be used a priori to select reaction conditions providing specific polymer properties. Gel swelling and average pore size were then able to be controlled between 80-1000-fold and 35-840 nm, respectively, by predictive estimation of reagent concentration and formulation conditions. This semisynthetic but natural polymer is stimuli-responsive exhibiting high water absorbency and may potentially be used as drug delivery vehicle for protein therapeutics.  相似文献

Protonation of produces the well-characterized polymolybdates, but at concentrations below 10−3 M the dominant species is monomeric molybdic acid, H2MoO4. It is likely to be the species adsorbed on manganese oxide, a process thought to control levels in the ocean, because of the strong proton dependence of adsorption. The molecular structure of H2MoO4 is elusive, since it occurs only in dilute solutions. Using 244 nm laser excitation, near resonance with O → Mo charge-transfer electronic transitions of H2MoO4, we have detected a 919 cm−1 Raman band assignable to νsMoO. Using DFT, we have computed geometries and vibrational modes for the various structures consistent with the H2MoO4 formula. We tested the computations on a series of Mo(VI) oxo complexes with known vibrational frequencies, at several levels of theory. Best agreement with experimental values, at reasonable computational cost, was obtained with the B3LYP functional, employing a LANL2DZ ECP basis set for Mo and the 6-311+G(2df,p) basis set for O and H. Among the possible H2MoO4 structures only those based on the MoO3 unit, with one, two or three coordinated water molecules, gave a scaled frequency for νsMoO that was within two standard deviations of 919 cm−1. Best agreement was obtained for MoO3(H2O)3. The MoO2 and MoO structures gave frequencies that were too high. The Mo(OH)6 structure could be excluded, because its vibrational frequencies shift down strongly upon H/D exchange, whereas the 919 cm−1H2MoO4 band shifts up 1 cm−1 in D2O.  相似文献
