Lipids comprising the stenols, stanols, polar lipid fatty acids, alkanes and alkenes of blue-green algal-(diatomaceous)-microbial mats and cores (modern cold water stromatolites) collected from three Antarctic lakes were identified and compared with those of other algae. The major stenols were: (cholesta-5, 22-dien-3β-ol, cholest-5-en-3β-ol, 24-methylcholesta-5, 22-dien-3β-ol, 24-methyl-cholest-5-en-3β-ol, 24-ethylcholesta-5, 22-dien-3β-ol, and 24-ethylcholest-5-en-3β-ol). The presence of C28 Δ3, 22 stenols, as well as other C28 stenols, was suggestive of diatom input. C29 stenols may have originated from blue-grern algae. However, the high concentrations of stenols present and the lack of Δ7 stenols was atypical for known stenol components of several blue-green algal species previously reported. The occurrence of these stenols and other lipid markers strongls implicate diatoms as well as blue-green algae as important biogenetic sources of lipids and has established the potential for studies of lipid diagenesis in these unique cold, freshwater stromatolites . 相似文献

A sex pheromone for adult male oriental cockroaches Blatta orientalis was isolated from the faeces of adult virgin female oriental cockroaches. It elicited a sexual response at 10 pg and 1 ng with B. orientalis and Periplaneta americana adult males, respectively. The site of production appers to be the crop, oesophagus, and proventriculus. Electroantennogram responses of male antennae toward the isolated pheromone were greater than those of the female antennae. The adult male oriental cockroach also responded to the American cockroach sex pheromone. The isolated pheromone with a mol. wt of 232 may be similar to one of the components of the American cockroach sex pheromone. 相似文献

Extracts of three continuous cell lines from the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni, were assayed for the presence of ecdysteroids. While no evidence of ecdysteroids was present in the extracts of the ovarian (TN-368) or embryonic (IPLB-TN-R2) cell lines, radioimmunoassays on extracts of media and extracts of cell pellets from imaginal disc cell cultures (IAL-TND1) were positive. The immunoreactive material from both cells and media co-migrated with a 20-hydroxyecdysone standard on reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The immunoreactive fractions from the cell extract were chromatographed on silica HPLC and subjected to mass spectral analysis. Both of these analyses indicated that the unknown compound was 20-hydroxyecdysone. Radioimmunoassay indicated up to 28 ng of ecdysone equivalents in cells (3.75 x 107 cells) from 50 ml of IAL-TND1 cultures, which is equivalent to 120 ng of 20-hydroxyecdysone based on relative reactivity of the antiserum used in this study. This report presents the first evidence of 20-hydroxyecdysone production by a continuous insect cell line and also the first to show that cells from imaginal discs are capable of ecdysteroid synthesis. 相似文献

The sterols of four species of Pentatomomorpha—Oncopeltus fasciatus (Dallas), Nezara viridula (L.), Dysdercus cingulatus (F.), and Podisus maculiventris (Say)—and threé species of Cimicomorpha—Rhodnius prolixus Stal, Arilus cristatus (L), and Cimex lectularius (L.)—were isolated and examined in order to compare neutral sterol utilization and content with the known ecdysteroids of these species. In the phytophagous Pentatomomorpha, O. fasciatus, N. viridula, and D. cingulatus, the low content of cholesterol and the high content of C28 and C29 phytosterols (< 1% and > 99% of the tissue sterols, respectively) indicated that these species are unable to dealkylate the C-24 position of sterols. These insects appear to have adapted to the challenge of both insufficient dietary cholesterol and inability to dealkylate phytosterols by evolving the ability to produce a C28 ecdysteroid (makisterone A). The secondarily predacious P. maculiventris has adequate cholesterol available for C27 ecdysteroid production, but appears to have retained the ecdysteroid biosynthetic pathways of its phytophagous ancestors because it produces a C28 ecdysteroid. Cholesterol was the major sterol of each of the three species of Cimicomorpha, and these insects are only able to produce C27 ecdysteroids. 相似文献

Complementary strands of adeno-associated virus DNA labeled with 32P at the 5' ends were separated and then self-annealed to form single-stranded circles stabilized by hydrogen bonds between the complementary sequences in the inverted terminal repetitions. We have previously shown that there are two distinct sequences in the terminal repetition which represent an inversion of the first 125 nucleotides (E. Lusby et al., J. Virol. 34:402-409, 1980; I. S. Spear et al., Virology 24:627-634, 1977). Base pairing between terminal sequences of the same orientation leads to a normal double helical structure. If sequences of the opposite orientation pair, an aberrant secondary structure is formed. HpaII digestion of the self-annealed, single-stranded circles led to labeled terminal fragments that corresponded both to those generated from termini of a normal double helical structure and those generated from an aberrant terminal secondary structure. Thus, the orientation of the terminal repetition at one end of the genome is not influenced by the orientation at the other end. 相似文献

Using high performance liquid chromatography in conjunction with radioimmunoassay and mass spectrometry, the major ecdysteroid of the solitary cactus bee, Diadasia rinconis, was determined to be 20-hydroxyecdysone, with lesser amounts of makisterone A. Another 28-carbon ecdysteroid thought to be the 24-epimer of makisterone A was also detected. The neutral sterols of Diadasia consisted primarily of 24-methylenecholesterol (92.2%) with lesser amounts of other C28 and C29 sterols. Cholesterol accounted for less than 0.1% of the total tissue sterols. The estimation of the carbon balance in ecosystems, regions, and the biosphere is currently one of the main concerns in the study of the ecology of global change. Current remote sensing methodologies for estimating gross primary productivity are not satisfactory because they rely too heavily on (i) the availability of climatic data, (ii) the definition of land‐use cover, and (iii) the assumptions of the effects of these two factors on the radiation‐use efficiency of vegetation (RUE). A new methodology is urgently needed that will actually assess RUE and overcome the problems associated with the capture of fluctuations in carbon absorption in space and over time. Remote sensing techniques such as the widely used reflectance vegetation indices (e.g. NDVI, EVI) allow green plant biomass and therefore plant photosynthetic capacity to be assessed. However, there are vegetation types, such as the Mediterranean forests, with a very low seasonality of these vegetation indices and a high seasonality of carbon uptake. In these cases it is important to detect how much of this capacity is actually realized, which is a much more challenging goal. The photochemical reflectance index (PRI) derived from freely available satellite information (MODIS sensor) presented for a 5‐year analysis for a Mediterranean forest a positive relationship with the RUE. Thus, we show that it is possible to estimate RUE and GPP in real time and therefore actual carbon uptake of Mediterranean forests at ecosystem level using the PRI. This conceptual and technological advancement would avoid the need to rely on the sometimes unreliable maximum RUE. 相似文献

A new species of Nepenthes L., N. attenboroughii (Nepenthaceae), from Palawan Island in the Philippines, is described and illustrated. It is restricted to rocky, ultramafic soils that comprise the summit region of Mount Victoria, Municipality of Narra, where it occurs in isolation from other members of the genus. On the basis of the morphological features, this new taxon appears to be related to both N. mira Jebb & Cheek of Palawan and N. rajah Hook.f. of Borneo. Its substantial size places it among the largest of known pitcher plants.
