A new species ofPhaeosphaeria is described from mangroves in South Africa. InPhaeosphaeria capensis ascospores are 29–36×7–8 μm, cylindric-fusiform or somewhat clavate, widest at the middle, narrow at the base and rounded at the apex, (6-)7-septate, light brown or brown, minutely verruculose and surrounded by a spreading, mucilaginous sheath. It is compared withP. luctuosa andP. berlesei from grasses.  相似文献

Summary This is a short review of the classical and new, natural and synthetic plant hormones and growth regulators (phytohormones) and highlights some of their uses in plant tissue culture. Plant hormones rarely act alone, and for most processes— at least those that are observed at the organ level—many of these regulators have interacted in order to produce the final effect. The following substances are discussed: (a) Classical plant hormones (auxins, cytokinins, gibberellins, abscisic acid, ethylene and growth regulatory substances with similar biological effects. New, naturally occurring substances in these categories are still being discovered. At the same time, novel structurally related compounds are constantly being synthesized. There are also many new but chemically unrelated compounds with similar hormone-like activity being produced. A better knowledge of the uptake, transport, metabolism, and mode of action of phytohormones and the appearance of chemicals that inhibit synthesis, transport, and action of the native plant hormones has increased our knowledge of the role of these hormones in growth and development. (b) More recently discovered natural growth substances that have phytohormonal-like regulatory roles (polyamines, oligosaccharins, salicylates, jasmonates, sterols, brassinosteroids, dehydrodiconiferyl alcohol glucosides, turgorins, systemin, unrelated natural stimulators and inhibitors), as well as myoinositol. Many of these growth active substances have not yet been examined in relation to growth and organized developmentin vitro.  相似文献

Protein import into mitochondria is initiated by the recognition and binding of precursor proteins by import components in the cytosol, on the mitochondrial surface, and in the mitochondrial outer membrane. Following their synthesis on cytoplasmic ribosomes, some precursor proteins interact with molecular chaperones in the cytosol which function in maintaining the precursor protein in an import-competent state and may also aid in the delivery of the precursor to the mitochondria. A multisubunit protein import receptor then recognises and binds precursor proteins before feeding them into the outer membrane import site. Some proteins are sorted from the import site into the outer membrane, but most precursor proteins travel through the outer membrane import site into the mitochondria, where the later steps of protein import take place.  相似文献

Two genes have been identified in Campylobacter coli VC167 which are required for the biosynthesis of post-translational modifications on flagellin proteins. The ptmA gene encodes a protein of predicted M r 28 486 which shows significant homology to a family of alcohol dehydrogenases from a variety of bacteria. The ptmB gene encodes a protein of predicted M r 26 598 with significant homology to CMP- N -acetylneuraminic acid synthetase enyzmes involved in sialic acid capsular biosynthesis in Neisseria meninigitidis and Escherichia coli K1. Site-specific mutation of either ptmA or ptmB caused loss of reactivity with antisera specific to the post-translational modifications and a change in the isoelectric focusing fingerprints relative to the parent strains. Mutation of ptmB , but not of ptmA , caused a change in apparent M r of the flagellin subunit in SDS–PAGE gels. The ptmA and ptmB genes are present in other strains of Campylobacter . In a rabbit model the ptmA mutant showed a reduced ability to elicit protection against subsequent challenge with heterologous strains of the same Lior serotype compared to the parental wild-type strain. This suggests that the surface-exposed post-translational modifications may play a significant role in the protective immune response.  相似文献

Although a dense cover of epiphytes is generally considered to be harmful for some coralline algae (Corallinaceae, Rhodophyta), crustose corallines in the littoral zone seem to be preserved from bleaching when covered by canopy plants and epiphytes during summer. This study aimed to test the responses of coralline crusts to epiphytes and canopy algae and their interaction with grazing limpets. Growth rates and color changes were followed in two crust species in areas with or without canopy algae in the Isle of Man, British Isles. Limpets were excluded, to allow epiphytes to grow upon crusts. Responses were measured both on pieces of crusts upon acrylic plates and on crusts growing naturally on the shore. Fucus canopy and epiphytic Enteromorpha significantly influenced the crusts' growth, depending on season. Epiphytes reduced the light levels beneath by up to 78%, more than the canopy algae (62%). Crusts exposed outside the canopy bleached in summer, but gradually restored their color once they were covered by epiphytes. The fast-growing Phymatolithon lenormandii (Aresch.) Adey recovered its coloration more quickly than the slow-growing P. purpureum (P. et H. Crouan) Woelkerling et Irvine. However, neither crust species could restore its color when epiphytes were reduced by grazing limpets, Patella vulgata L. Bleaching did not kill the crusts, but seemed to interfere with crusts' growth. Restoration of pigmentation was quantified for the first time on bleached coralline crusts. Epiphyte and canopy algae were experimentally shown to be beneficial, probably by providing shade and also protecting crusts from desiccation.  相似文献

The presence and impacts of non‐indigenous species (NIS) in marine areas of high conservation or World Heritage significance have rarely been examined. Case studies worldwide suggest that the potential exists for the introduction of NIS to significantly impact conservation values in regions conserved for the uniqueness and diversity of native assemblages. In this study, a preliminary investigation was conducted to provide information essential for managing marine introductions in the Shark Bay World Heritage Property. A focused fouling plate survey sampled a total of 112 encrusting taxa, of which 10 (11.2%) were classified as introduced and 10 others as cryptogenic. Eight introduced bryozoans: Aetea anguina (Linnaeus, 1758), Bugula neritina (Linnaeus, 1758), Bugula stolonifera Ryland, 1960, Conopeum seurati (Canu, 1928), Savignyella lafontii (Audouin, 1826), Schizoporella errata (Waters, 1878), Watersipora subtorquata (d’Orbigny, 1842) and Zoobotryon verticellatum della Chiaje, 1828; one tunicate, Styela plicata Lesueur, 1823; and an introduced hydroid, Obelia dichotoma (Linnaeus, 1758) were frequent, and in some cases dominant, components of encrusting communities. Of the 20 most frequently occurring species detected in the Bay, four were introduced and of the 20 species with highest average percent cover per plate, six were introduced. At one site, space occupation by NIS averaged 71.6% ± 7.4 of plate live cover. Space occupation by an individual NIS was as high as 62.4% of plate area (mean 7.82% ± 1.8). NIS were detected at sites lacking commercial traffic and ballast water discharge and isolated by distance and physical environment, suggesting that hull fouling of recreational craft may be the most important vector in the region. Seventy‐five percent of NIS detected in Shark Bay are established in Australian ports to the south of Shark Bay, while 33% are established to the north, tentatively implicating temperate affinity NIS and the movement of vessels from Australian ports south of Shark Bay as a greater risk to the region.  相似文献

Extravehicular activity (EVA) during spaceflight involves a significant decompression stress. Previous studies have shown an increase in the inhomogeneity of ventilation-perfusion ratio (VA/Q) after some underwater dives, presumably through the embolic effects of venous gas microemboli in the lung. Ground-based chamber studies simulating EVA have shown that venous gas microemboli occur in a large percentage of the subjects undergoing decompression, despite the use of prebreathe protocols to reduce dissolved N(2) in the tissues. We studied eight crewmembers (7 male, 1 female) of the International Space Station who performed 15 EVAs (initial cabin pressure 748 mmHg, final suit pressure either approximately 295 or approximately 220 mmHg depending on the suit used) and who followed the denitrogenation procedures approved for EVA from the International Space Station. The intrabreath VA/Q slope was calculated from the alveolar Po(2) and Pco(2) in a prolonged exhalation maneuver on the day after EVA and compared with measurements made in microgravity on days well separated from the EVA. There were no significant changes in intrabreath VA/Q slope as a result of EVA, although there was a slight increase in metabolic rate and ventilation (approximately 9%) on the day after EVA. Vital capacity and other measures of pulmonary function were largely unaltered by EVA. Because measurements could only be performed on the day after EVA because of logistical constraints, we were unable to determine an acute effect of EVA on VA/Q inequality. The results suggest that current denitrogenation protocols do not result in any major lasting alteration to gas exchange in the lung.  相似文献

The impact of climate change on crop yields has become widely measured; however, the linkages for winter wheat are less studied due to dramatic weather changes during the long growing season that are difficult to model. Recent research suggests significant reductions under warming. A potential adaptation strategy involves the development of heat resistant varieties by breeders, combined with alternative variety selection by producers. However, the impact of heat on specific wheat varieties remains relatively unstudied due to limited data and the complex genetic basis of heat tolerance. Here, we provide a novel econometric approach that combines field‐trial data with a genetic cluster mapping to group wheat varieties and estimate a separate extreme heat impact (temperatures over 34 °C) across 24 clusters spanning 197 varieties. We find a wide range of heterogeneous heat resistance and a trade‐off between average yield and resistance. Results suggest that recently released varieties are less heat resistant than older varieties, a pattern that also holds for on‐farm varieties. Currently released – but not yet adopted – varieties do not offer improved resistance relative to varieties currently grown on farm. Our findings suggest that warming impacts could be significantly reduced through advances in wheat breeding and/or adoption decisions by producers. However, current adaptation‐through‐adoption potential is limited under a 1 °C warming scenario as increased heat resistance cannot be achieved without a reduction in average yields.  相似文献
