Infrared thermal imaging of the inner canthi of the periorbital regions of the face can potentially serve as an input signal modality for an alternative access system for individuals with conditions that preclude speech or voluntary movement, such as total locked-in syndrome. However, it is unknown if the temperature of these regions is affected by the human startle response, as changes in the facial temperature of the periorbital regions manifested during the startle response could generate false positives in a thermography-based access system. This study presents an examination of the temperature characteristics of the periorbital regions of 11 able-bodied adult participants before and after a 102 dB auditory startle stimulus. The results indicate that the startle response has no substantial effect on the mean temperature of the periorbital regions. This indicates that thermography-based access solutions would be insensitive to startle reactions in their user, an important advantage over other modalities being considered in the context of access solutions for individuals with a severe motor disability.  相似文献

Twenty splenectomized Aotus vociferans (karyotype V) monkeys were infected with strains of Plasmodium vivax from New Guinea, North Korea, Indonesia, El Salvador, and Honduras. Peak parasite densities ranged from 4,840 to 75,500 per mm3. Gametocytes infective to different species of mosquitoes were produced with all strains of P. vivax studied. Two transmissions of the Chesson strain of P. vivax were made by the intravenous inoculation of dissected sporozoites from An. dirus mosquitoes. Prepatent periods were 16 days.  相似文献

Six dichlorophenoxyacetones were synthesized and examined as potential metabolic antagonists utilizing Avena coleoptile sections and the straight growth assay procedure. Supplements of indoleacetic acid promoted growth of the sections which were inhibited by the analogs; the most inhibitory derivatives were 2,3-; 2,4-; 2,5-; and 3,4-dichlorophenoxyacetone which produced half-maximal growth responses (relative to the unaug-mented control growth) at concentrations of 106, 86, 80, and 62 μg/ml, respectively. A Lineweaver-Burk plot of the data for the inhibition by 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetone and its reversal by indoleacetic acid appeared to represent an uncompetitive-like inhibition.  相似文献

Molecular and Structural Characterization of Barley Vernalization Genes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Vernalization, the requirement of a period of low temperature to induce transition from the vegetative to reproductive state, is an evolutionarily and economically important trait in the Triticeae. The genetic basis of vernalization in cultivated barley (Hordeum vulgare subsp. vulgare) can be defined using the two-locus VRN-H1/VRN-H2 model. We analyzed the allelic characteristics of HvBM5A, the candidate gene for VRN-H1, from ten cultivated barley accessions and one wild progenitor accession (subsp. spontaneum), representing the three barley growth habits – winter, facultative, and spring. We present multiple lines of evidence, including sequence, linkage map location, and expression, that support HvBM5A being VRN-H1. While the predicted polypeptides from different growth habits are identical, spring accessions contain a deletion in the first intron of HvBM5A that may be important for regulation. While spring HvBM5A alleles are typified by the intron-localized deletion, in some cases, the promoter may also determine the allele type. The presence/absence of the tightly linked ZCCT-H gene family members on chromosome 4H perfectly correlates with growth habit and we conclude that one of the three ZCCT-H genes is VRN-H2. The VRN-H2 locus is present in winter genotypes and deleted from the facultative and spring genotypes analyzed in this study, suggesting the facultative growth habit (cold tolerant, vernalization unresponsive) is a result of deletion of the VRN-H2 locus and presence of a winter HvBM5A allele. All reported barley vernalization QTLs can be explained by the two-locus VRN-H1/VRN-H2 model based on the presence/absence of VRN-H2 and a winter vs. spring HvBM5A allele. BACKGROUND: The morphometric analysis of red blood cells (RBCs) is an important area of study and has been performed previously for fixed samples. We present a novel method for the analysis of morphologic changes of live erythrocytes as a function of time. We use this method to extract information on alkaline hemolysis fragility. Many other toxins lyse cells by membrane poration, which has been studied by averaging over cell populations. However, no quantitative data are available for changes in the morphology of individual cells during membrane poration-driven hemolysis or for the relation between cell shape and fragility. METHODS: Hydroxide, a porating agent, was generated in a microfluidic enclosure containing RBCs in suspension. Automatic cell recognition, tracking, and morphometric measurements were done by using a custom image analysis program. Cell area and circular shape factor (CSF) were measured over time for individual cells. Implementations were developed in MATLAB and on Kestrel, a parallel computer that affords higher speed that approaches real-time processing. RESULTS: The average CSF went through a first period of fast increase, corresponding to the conversion of discocytes to spherocytes under internal osmotic pressure, followed by another period of slow increase until the fast lysis event. For individual cells, the initial CSF was shown to be inversely correlated to cell lifetime (linear regression factor R=0.44), with discocytes surviving longer than spherocytes. The inflated cell surface area to volume ratio was also inversely correlated to lifetime (R=0.43) but not correlated to the CSF. Lifetime correlated best to the ratio of cell inflation volume (Vfinal-Vinitial) to surface area (R=0.65). CONCLUSIONS: RBCs inflate at a rate proportional to their surface area, in agreement with a constant flux model, and lyse after attaining a spherical morphology. Spherical RBCs display increased alkaline hemolysis fragility (shorter lifetimes), providing an explanation for the increased osmotic fragility of RBCs from patients who have spherocytosis.  相似文献

We describe a simple deterministic theoretical framework for analysing the gene frequency evolution of two alternative alleles at a single genetic locus in a habitat comprising two environments in which the genotypes have different relative fitnesses. We illustrate this for adaptation of pest insects, where one allele (resistance to toxins expressed in transgenic crops) is favoured in one environment (transgenic plants) and the other allele (susceptibility to toxins) is favoured in the other environment (‘refuges’ of non-transgenic plants). The evolution of allele frequencies depends on selection pressure because of relative sizes of the environments and relative fitnesses of the genotypes in each environment. We demonstrate that there are critical threshold proportions for habitat division that determine equilibrium allele frequencies. The stability of the system depends on relationships between the relative genotype fitnesses. In some cases, the division of the habitat in exactly the threshold proportions removes selection pressure and maintains polymorphism at all allele frequencies.  相似文献

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill triggered a complex cascade of microbial responses that reshaped the dynamics of heterotrophic carbon degradation and the turnover of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in oil contaminated waters. Our results from 21-day laboratory incubations in rotating glass bottles (roller bottles) demonstrate that microbial dynamics and carbon flux in oil-contaminated surface water sampled near the spill site two weeks after the onset of the blowout were greatly affected by activities of microbes associated with macroscopic oil aggregates. Roller bottles with oil-amended water showed rapid formation of oil aggregates that were similar in size and appearance compared to oil aggregates observed in surface waters near the spill site. Oil aggregates that formed in roller bottles were densely colonized by heterotrophic bacteria, exhibiting high rates of enzymatic activity (lipase hydrolysis) indicative of oil degradation. Ambient waters surrounding aggregates also showed enhanced microbial activities not directly associated with primary oil-degradation (β-glucosidase; peptidase), as well as a twofold increase in DOC. Concurrent changes in fluorescence properties of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) suggest an increase in oil-derived, aromatic hydrocarbons in the DOC pool. Thus our data indicate that oil aggregates mediate, by two distinct mechanisms, the transfer of hydrocarbons to the deep sea: a microbially-derived flux of oil-derived DOC from sinking oil aggregates into the ambient water column, and rapid sedimentation of the oil aggregates themselves, serving as vehicles for oily particulate matter as well as oil aggregate-associated microbial communities.  相似文献
