Bromeliads constitute a good example of symbiosis with organisms that spend their entire life cycle inside the plants, and often depend on them to breed. The bromeliads benefit from this interaction by increasing their nutrients intake. Conservation efforts tend to focus on a single endangered species, but in symbiotic associations, the viability of one species depends on that of the other. Based on IUCN criteria, any species that depends on another to complete its life cycle should be assigned a conservation status equivalent to that of the host taxon, where appropriate. We gathered published plus fieldwork data on the frog-bromeliad mutualism and compiled a checklist of 99 bromeligenous frogs species associated to 69 bromeliad hosts, and found threatened bromeliads hosting non-threatened frogs. We found that 62% bromeligenous frogs inhabit unspecified bromeliads. Finally, we propose strategies for improving understanding and conservation of the frog-bromeliad mutualism.  相似文献

Postharvest physiological deterioration (PPD) of cassava (Manihot esculenta) storage roots is a complex physiological and biochemical process which involve many regulatory networks linked with specific proteins modulation and signaling transduction pathways. However, it is poorly understood regarding biological regulation, and the interactions among protein groups and signals to determine PPD syndrome in cassava storage roots. This review sheds some light on the possible molecular mechanisms involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS), calcium signaling transduction, and programmed cell death (PCD) in cassava PPD syndrome. A model for predicting crosstalk among calcium signaling, ROS and PCD is suggested to fine-tune PPD syndrome. This would clues to cassava molecular breeding to alleviate the PPD effects on the shelf-life.  相似文献

The planting of RR2 Intacta soybeans by farmers has been expanding strongly. However, some visual injuries have been noted after glyphosate application. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of glyphosate application on chlorophyll, photosynthesis and water use of four Intacta RR2 soybean cultivars. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in a randomized block design with a 3 × 4 factorial scheme, consisting of three glyphosate rates and four soybean cultivars. The glyphosate formula used was isopropylamine salt + potassium salt. The parameters analyzed were phytotoxicity at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after application, and total chlorophyll index at 0, 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42 and 49 days after application. Furthermore, 40 days after application, the net CO2 assimilation rate (A), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (G), and internal CO2 concentration (Ci) were evaluated as well. The water-use efficiency (WUE) and carboxylation efficiency were calculated. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and compared by the Tukey’s test (p ≤ 0.05), followed by regression analysis. The phytotoxicity influence could be seen until 21 days after application, in which Monsoy 6210 IPRO cultivar was the most injured. The increasing doses promoted a reduction of the chlorophyll level up to 35 days after application in Monsoy 6410 IPRO. The cultivars tested here showed similar chlorophyll index values. On the 3rd, 7th and 14th DAA (Fig. 5a–c), there was a significant linear decline in the chlorophyll index with rising glyphosate dose for all four cultivars. The chlorophyll index cultivars were not influenced by the doses on the 42nd and 49th DAA. There was no difference in water use and carboxylation efficiency. The parameters A, E and A/Ci showed a positive correlation as the doses increased, while Ci declined, in both cultivars. The application of glyphosate on these soybean cultivars causes different injuries according to the sensitivity. In general, RR2 soybeans have the ability to recover from visual intoxication injuries and reestablish the normal chlorophyll production and photosynthetic parameters after glyphosate application.  相似文献

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD), the second most common form of dementia in people under 65 years of age, is characterized by progressive atrophy of the frontal and/or temporal lobes. FTD overlaps extensively with the motor neuron disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), especially at the genetic level. Both FTD and ALS can be caused by many mutations in the same set of genes; the most prevalent of these mutations is a GGGGCC repeat expansion in the first intron of C9ORF72. As shown by recent intensive studies, some key cellular pathways are dysregulated in the ALS‐FTD spectrum disorder, including autophagy, nucleocytoplasmic transport, DNA damage repair, pre‐mRNA splicing, stress granule dynamics, and others. These exciting advances reveal the complexity of the pathogenic mechanisms of FTD and ALS and suggest promising molecular targets for future therapeutic interventions in these devastating disorders.  相似文献

Background

The current concept of overweight/obesity is most likely related to a combination of increased caloric intake and decreased energy expenditure. Widespread inflammation, associated with both conditions, appears to contribute to the development of some obesity-related comorbidities. Interventions that directly or indirectly target individuals at high risk of developing obesity have been largely proposed because of the increasing number of overweight/obese cases worldwide. The aim of the present study was to assess CXCL16, IL-17, and BMP-2 plasma factors in middle-aged and elderly women and relate them to an overweight or obese status. In total, 117 women were selected and grouped as eutrophic, overweight, and obese, according to anthropometric parameters. Analyses of anthropometric and circulating biochemical parameters were followed by plasma immunoassays for CXCL-16, IL-17, and BMP-2.

Results

Plasma mediators increased in all overweight and obese individuals, with the exception of BMP-2 in the elderly group, whereas CXCL16 levels were shown to differentiate overweight and obese individuals. Overweight and/or obese middle-aged and elderly individuals presented with high LDL, triglycerides, and glycemia levels. Anthropometric parameters indicating increased-cardiovascular risk were positively correlated with CXCL-16, BMP-2, and IL-17 levels in overweight and obese middle-aged and elderly individuals.

Conclusion

This study provides evidence that CXCL-16, IL-17, and BMP-2 are potential plasma indicators of inflammatory status in middle-aged and elderly women; therefore, further investigation of obesity-related comorbidities is recommended. CXCL16, in particular, could be a potential marker for middle-aged and elderly individuals transitioning from eutrophic to overweight body types, which represents an asymptomatic and dangerous condition.

Although adenosine A1 receptors (A1R) have been associated to ischemic preconditioning (IPC), direct evidence for their ability to preserve mitochondrial function upon hepatic preconditioning is still missing and could represent a novel strategy to boost the quality of liver transplants. We tested if the A1R antagonist 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine (DPCPX) prevented IPC in the liver and if the A1R agonist 2-chloro-N6-cyclopentyladenosine (CCPA) might afford a pharmacological preconditioning. Livers underwent a 120 min of 70% warm ischemia and 16 h of reperfusion (I/R), and the IPC group underwent a 5-min ischemic episode followed by a 10-min period of reperfusion before I/R. DPCPX or CCPA was administered intraperitoneally 2 h before IPC or I/R. The control of mitochondrial function emerged as the central element affected by IPC and controlled by endogenous A1R activation. Thus, livers from IPC- or CCPA-treated rats displayed an improved oxidative phosphorylation with higher state 3 respiratory rate, higher respiratory control ratio, increased ATP content, and decreased lag phase. IPC and CCPA also prevented the I/R-induced susceptibility to calcium-induced mitochondrial permeability transition, the rate of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and the decreased mitochondrial content of phospho-Ser9 GSK-3β. DPCPX abrogated these effects of IPC. These implicate the control of GSK-3β activity by Akt-mediated Ser9-GSK-3β phosphorylation preserving the efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation and ROS-mediated cell death in the ability of A1R activation to mimic IPC in the liver. In conclusion, the parallel between IPC and A1R-mediated preconditioning also paves the way to consider a putative therapeutic use of the later in liver transplants.  相似文献

The geometry configuration of charged armchair graphene nanoribbons (AGNRs) is theoretically investigated in the framework of a two-dimensional tight-binding model that includes lattice relaxation. Our findings show that the charge distribution and, consequently, the bond length pattern is dependent on the parity of the nanoribbon width. In this sense, the lattice distortions decrease smoothly for increasingly wider GNRs. As should be expected, AGNRs belonging to a particular family present similar patterns for the bond lengths. The interplay between the electron-phonon coupling and band gap is also investigated. The results show that the electron-phonon coupling strength is fundamental to promote the transition from metallic towards semiconducting-like behavior for the band gap. Most important, such strength is crucial on defining the degree of lattice distortions in AGNRs.  相似文献

The polaron stability in organic molecular crystals is theoretically investigated in the scope of a two-dimensional Holstein–Peierls model that includes lattice relaxation. Particularly, the investigation is focused on designing a model Hamiltonian that can address properly the polaron properties in different model oligoacene crystals. The findings showed that a suitable choice for a set of parameters can play the role of distinguishing the model crystals and, consequently, different properties related to the polaron stability in these systems are observed. Importantly, the usefulness of this model is stressed by investigating the electronic localization of the polaron, which provides a deeper understanding into the properties associated with the polaron stability in oligoacene crystals.  相似文献

Background

There are several reports on anatomical differences of the meniscus. However, there are only a few reports on abnormalities in both menisci and anatomical differences in anterior cruciate ligament insertions.

Case presentation

This is a case report of a 36-year-old Hispanic man presenting symptoms, including knee pain, locking, and effusion, with an anatomical abnormality of the menisci corresponding to the fusion of the posterior horns of the menisci in tandem with the insertion of the posterior meniscus fibers in the anterior cruciate ligament.

Conclusions

This is the first study describing a meniscus anatomical variant with isolated posterior junction of the posterior horn with an anomalous insertion to the anterior cruciate ligament. The recognition of meniscus variants is important as they can be misinterpreted for more significant pathology on magnetic resonance images.
