Novel selective pressures derived from human activities challenge the persistence of animal populations worldwide. Behavior is expected to be a major factor driving animals’ responses to global change because it largely determines how animals interact with the environment. However, the role of individual variation in behavior to facilitate the persistence of animals in changing environments remains poorly understood. Here, we adopted an animal personality approach to investigate whether different behavioral traits allow animals to deal with two major components of global change: urbanization and biological invasions. By studying six populations of Anolis sagrei lizards, we found for the first time that anoles vary consistently in their behavior across different times and contexts. Importantly, these animal personalities were consistent in the wild and in captivity. We investigated whether behavioral traits are pulled in different directions by different components of global change. On the one hand, we found that lizards from urban areas differ from nearby forest lizards in that they were more tolerant of humans, less aggressive, bolder after a simulated predator attack, and they spent more time exploring new environments. Several of these risk‐taking behaviors constituted a behavioral syndrome that significantly differed between urban and forest populations. On the other hand, the behavior of urban A. sagrei coexisting with the invasive predatory lizard Leiocephalus carinatus was associated with dramatic changes in their foraging niche. Overall, we provide evidence that differences in animal personalities facilitate the persistence of animals under novel selective regimes by producing adaptive behaviors relevant to their ecology such as predator avoidance. Our results suggest that natural selection can favor certain behaviors over others when animals are confronted with different ecological challenges posed by global change. Therefore, we underscore the need to incorporate behavioral ecology into the study of how animals adaptively respond to human‐induced environmental changes.  相似文献

Five naturally occurring chromenes from the Asteraceae including the insecticidal compounds precocene II (1) and encecalin (2) were administered to last instar larvae of Spodoptera littoralis via the food or by topical contact. Metabolites formed and excreted via the frass were analysed by GC-MS and by direct comparison with reference compounds obtained by partial synthesis. In total 28 different metabolites were identified, many of them reported here for the first time. All metabolites detected originated from phase I reactions (most probably catalysed by Cytochrom P-450-dependent monooxygenases) by hydroxylation, demethylation or reduction of the parent chromenes. The resulting metabolites can be regarded as detoxification products based on previous structure-activity studies. The increased polarity of the metabolites will furthermore facilitate their excretion by the larvae compared to the more apolar parent chromenes. The largest number of metabolites (eight for each compound) was detected following oral treatment with precocene II and encecalin respectively. 3-Monool as well as 3,4-trans-diol derivatives predominated in the frass of larvae treated with the latter compounds whereas the 6-hydroxyethyl derivatives were the major metabolites of the other chromenes investigated. The patterns of metabolites originating from precocene II or encecalin were the same following oral application or topical treatment.  相似文献

The plant family Boraginaceae is known to produce a set of unusual fatty acids in the seed oils. In this study, the fatty acid, tocopherol, tocotrienol and plasto-chromanol-8 contents of some Onosma species ( Onosma sericeum, O. armeniacum and O. polioxanthum ) all belonging to sect. Onosma, Anchusa leptophylla subsp. leptophylla, Alkanna froedini and Paracaryum stenophyllum were determined. Some of the studied species are endemic for Turkey. While oleic, linoleic and alpha linolenic acid are the highest as usual fatty acids, gamma linolenic and stearidonic acids are more variable unusual fatty acids in studied genera patterns and the relative concentrations some of these fatty acids and partly also the tocochromanols in Boraginaceae seed oils are suggested to have chemotaxonomic value in this family. In particular, the presence or absence of chain elongation to erucic acid (22:1) and the presence or absence of Δ6-methylene-interrupted polyenoic acids such as γ-linolenic and stearidonic acid are determined and marked as indicators of taxonomic relationship.  相似文献

Cell cultures of Thuja occidentalis excrete monoterpenoids into the culture medium. Highly volatile monoterpene hydrocarbons were only detectable in the presence of Miglyol, a water-insoluble non-toxic trap for lipophilic compounds. In the presence of Miglyol the levels of oxygenated monoterpenoids were two-fold higher than in dichloromethane-extracts of culture media. The cells excrete up to 3 mg regular monoterpenoids/g dry wt/day. Continuous extraction of lipophilic compounds by Miglyol also allowed quantification of a Tris—thujaplicinato—(Fe III)-complex.  相似文献

 The tree species black alder [Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.] typically inhabits wet sites in central Europe but is also successful on well drained soils. To test the physiological adjustment of the species in situ, conductances, transpiration rates and water potentials (Scholander pressure chamber) of black alder leaves were investigated at two neighbouring sites with different water regimes: alder trees at an occasionally water logged alder forest and alder shrubs in a nearby, much drier hedgerow. Additional experiments with alder cuttings in nutrient culture showed that leaf conductances and gas exchange were both strongly influenced by the substrate water potential. In situ however, there was little spatial variability within the different parts of a crown and we found that physiological regulation at leaf level was hardly influenced by different site water regimes or different tree sizes. Diurnal courses of leaf water relations as well as their regulation at the leaf level (e.g. the hyperbolic relationship between conductances and ΔW) were strikingly similar at both sites. Leaf water potential in black alder was shown to be a consequence of immediate transpiration rates, which were high in comparison to other tree species (up to 4 mmol H2O m–2 s–1), rather than the water potentials being a factor that influenced conductance and, therefore, transpiration. The always high leaf conductances and consequent high transpiration rates are interpreted as a strategy to maximise productivity through low stomatal limitation at sites where water supply is usually not limited. The kinase inhibitor p27Kip1 regulates the G1 cell cycle phase. Here, we present data indicating that the oncogenic kinase Src regulates p27 stability through phosphorylation of p27 at tyrosine 74 and tyrosine 88. Src inhibitors increase cellular p27 stability, and Src overexpression accelerates p27 proteolysis. Src-phosphorylated p27 is shown to inhibit cyclin E-Cdk2 poorly in vitro, and Src transfection reduces p27-cyclin E-Cdk2 complexes. Our data indicate that phosphorylation by Src impairs the Cdk2 inhibitory action of p27 and reduces its steady-state binding to cyclin E-Cdk2 to facilitate cyclin E-Cdk2-dependent p27 proteolysis. Furthermore, we find that Src-activated breast cancer lines show reduced p27 and observe a correlation between Src activation and reduced nuclear p27 in 482 primary human breast cancers. Importantly, we report that in tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer cell lines, Src inhibition can increase p27 levels and restore tamoxifen sensitivity. A number of proteins produced by certain bacteria and plants are potently toxic to mammalian cells. This toxicity results from their ability to catalytically modify macromolecules that are required for essential cellular functions such as vesicular trafficking, cytoskeletal assembly, signalling or protein synthesis. To reach their targets, these proteins bind specific surface receptors before endocytosis and translocation across an internal membrane. The surface receptors exploited by different toxins include a range of proteins and lipids. Here we focus on specific glycosphingolipid receptors and two well-characterised subsets of toxins that exploit them for surface binding, intracellular trafficking, and signalling events.  相似文献

The homopentameric B-subunit of Shiga toxin (STxB) is used as a tool to deliver antigenic peptides and proteins to the cytosolic compartment of dendritic cells (DCs). In this study, a series of interface mutants of STxB has been constructed. All mutants retained their overall conformation, while a loss in thermal stability was observed. This effect was even more pronounced in trifluoroethanol solutions that mimic the membrane environment. Despite this, all mutants were equally efficient at delivering a model antigenic protein into the MHC class I-restricted antigen presentation pathway of mouse DCs, suggesting that the structural stability of STxB is not a key factor in the membrane translocation process.  相似文献
