Rare earth thiocyanate complexes with tripiperidinophosphine oxide: synthesis and characterization. Crystal structure of Pr(SCN)3(tpppO)3

The synthesis and characterization of rare-earth (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and Y) thiocyanate adducts with tripiperidinophosphine oxide (tpppO) with general formula (RE)(SCN)₃(tpppO)₃ are reported. Conductance measurements in acetonitrile indicate the non-electrolytic nature of the complexes. Infrared absorption spectra evidence that the SCN⁻ ion coordinates through the nitrogen atom (isothiocyanate form) and that tpppO coordinates through the phosphoryl oxygen. X-ray powder patterns suggest the existence of three different crystal forms: (1) La; (2) an isomorphous series including Ce, Nd and Pr; and (3) another isomorphous series, including Sm, Gd, Eu, Ho, Er, Tb, Lu and Y. The visible spectra of the Nd adduct and the calculated parameters β = 0.98, b^1/2 = 0.072 and δ = 1.06 indicate that the metal-ligand bonds are essentially electrostactic. The emission spectra of the Eu compound showed ⁵D₀ → ⁷F_J bands (J = 0, 1, 2), suggesting a C_3v symmetry for the coordination polyhedron. The lifetime of the ⁵D₀ state is 1.28 ms. The emission spectra of the Tb complex presented ⁵D₄ → ⁷F_J bands (J = 4, 5, 6) and the Dy complex showed the ⁴F_9/2 → ⁶H_13/2 band. The structure of the Pr complex showed that the coordination polyhedron is a trigonal antiprism, with the isothiocyanate anions in one base and three tpppO ligands in the other. Thermal analyses (TG-DTG) were carried out for the Ce, Nd and Gd adducts. Mass losses start between 250 and 334 °C. The final residues at 1300 °C are the corresponding phosphates.     

Esters of trehalose from Corynebacterium diphtheriae: A modified purification procedure and studies on the structure of their constituent hydroxylated fatty acids

The purification procedure of 6,6′-diesters of trehalose from Corynebacterium diphtheriae was modified and the isolated substance was analysed by mass spectrometry as its permethylated derivative. The fatty acid moiety released from the glycolipid after alkaline hydrolysis was studied by mass spectral analysis of the O-methylated and O-acetylated methyl ester derivatives. By argentation thin-layer chromatography, three species of O-acetylated methyl esters were recognized, corresponding to saturated, mono-unsaturated and di-unsaturated α-branched-β-hydroxylated fatty acids. The double bond was located by ozonolysis of the O-acetylated methyl ester derivatives, by gas chromatography of the reaction product and mass spectrometry of the effluent from the gas chromatograph. The main components of each species of α-branched-β-hydroxylated fatty acids found in the gly colipid fraction of C. diphtheriae were 2-tetradecyl-3-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid (C₃₂H₆₄O₃, corynomycolic acid), 2-tetradecyl-3-hydroxy-11-octadecenoic acid (C₃₂H₆₂O₃, corynomycolenic acid), 2-tetradec-7′-enyl-3-hydroxy octadecanoic acid (C₃₂H₆₂O₃) and 2-tetradec-7′-enyl-3-hydroxy-11-octadecenoic acid (C₃₂H₆₀O₃, corynomycoldienic acid). The glycolipid fraction from C. diphtheriae is obviously a complex mixture of 6,6′-diesters of trehalose.     

FLAVONOID EVOLUTION IN DENDROSERIS (COMPOSITAE,LACTUCEAE) FROM THE JUAN FERNANDEZ ISLANDS,CHILE

Leaf flavonoid chemistry was examined from the three subgenera and 11 species of the endemic genus Dendroseris (Compositae, Lactuceae) of the Juan Fernandez Islands, Chile. Eight of the species are restricted to the older island (Masatierra, ca. 4 million years old), which is also closer to the mainland. Three species, one from each subgenus, are restricted to Masafuera, which is younger geologically (1–2 million years old) and 145 km further west of Masatierra. A total of 16 compounds was identified, with the 7-0-glucosides of the flavones apigenin and luteolin accounting for 12 of the constituents. Two glucosides of the flavonol quercetin were detected. Despite considerable interpopulation variation within species, six of the taxa have distinctive flavonoid profiles. Although there are few absolute differences among the subgenera, they can be distinguished chemically. Subgenus Rea contains the greatest number of compounds, and a previous cladistic analysis based on morphological features suggested this subgenus as most primitive. Subgenus Phoenicoseris is considered highly derived morphologically, and it has a reduced flavonoid chemistry. Very little reduction in flavonoid diversity was seen in the morphologically specialized subg. Dendroseris as compared to subg. Rea. A trend in reduction of numbers of compounds was seen for two of the three species on the younger island of Masafuera when compared to their presumed ancestors on Masatierra. Flavonoids of selected species of Hieracium and Hypochaeris, presumptive mainland progenitors of Dendroseris, reveal a close chemical affinity with the former genus.     

Embryos of common thresher shark Alopias vulpinus in southern Brazil, South Atlantic Ocean

Eight embryonic thresher sharks Alopias vulpinus (53·9–124 cm total length) were collected from two females caught by commercial longline off southern Brazil in September and November 2004. Morphometric measurements are provided.     

Comparative chromatography of Brazilian coral snake (Micrurus) venoms.

1. Elution profiles of 11 coral snake venoms, including those of Micrurus albicinctus, M. corallinus, M. frontalis altirostris, M. f. brasiliensis, M. f. frontalis, M. fulvius fulvius, M. ibiboboca, M. lemniscatus ssp., M. rondonianus, M. spixii spixii and M. surinamensis surinamensis, were compared using high performance gel filtration and reverse phase media. 2. Micrurus venom profiles were compared with those of "outgroup" taxa Bothrops moojeni, Naja naja kaouthia and Bungarus multicinctus. 3. Purified elapid venom constituents were also chromatographed under identical conditions in order to suggest possible identities of Micrurus venom constituents. 4. Masses of various components were confirmed by mass spectrometry. 5. Phospholipase constituents in three venoms were positively identified based on their reverse phase chromatograms. 6. Venoms of M. rondonianus and M. s. surinamensis are shown to be significantly different in their peptide composition from other Micrurus venoms.     

Application of flow karyotyping in prenatal detection of chromosome aberrations

This paper describes the application of bivariate flow karyotyping to (1) classification of chromosomes isolated from cultures of cells taken by amniocentesis and (2) detection of numerical and structural aberrations. Chromosomes were isolated from primary cultures 2-5 wk after amniocentesis, stained with Hoechst 33258 and chromomycin A3, and analyzed using dual beam flow cytometry. Information about chromosome DNA content and DNA base composition was derived from the locations of the peaks in the flow karyotypes, each peak being produced by one or more chromosome types with similar DNA content and DNA base composition. Information about the relative frequency of each chromosome type was determined on the basis of the relative volume of the peak for that chromosome type. Cytogenetic information determined on the basis of flow karyotypes was compared with that obtained by visual analysis following G-banding. Variability among the peak means and volumes in flow karyotypes was determined from analyses of 50 normal amniocyte cultures. Numerical aberrations involving chromosomes 21, 18, and Y were detected correctly in all of 28 analyses, including eight in a blind study. Structural aberrations involving chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 6, 9-12, 13, 14, 15, 21, and 22 were detected in all of seven cultures in a blind study. Flow karyotypes proved to be insensitive to small, normally occurring chromosome polymorphisms detected by banding analysis. In addition, a few samples were erroneously scored as having numerical aberrations.
