Gelatin as a vehicle for food and vitamin administration to marmosets

For a period of three years, gelatin was used as a vehicle for administration of food, vitamin complex and drugs to laboratory maintained Callithrix penicillata and Callithrix jacchus marmosets and a breeding colony of C. penicillata. In both circumstances, results were satisfactory. The animals survived for long periods of time, with adult, young and juvenile primates in the breeding colony showing good physical condition.     

Morbidity in Chagas' disease. IV. Longitudinal study of 10 years in Pains and Iguatama, Minas Gerais, Brazil

An evolutive study of the "case-control" type was carried out in an endemic area of Chagas' disease in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, using two cross-section evaluations with an interval of ten years between them (1974-1984). Patients were paired for sex and age. In the first cross-section study 264 pairs one with a positive serology and the other with a negative serology for T. cruzi antibodies were included. In the second evaluation, ten years later, 235 patients among those with previous positive serology and 216 with negative serology were located, but only 110 pairs could be recomposed and reexamined (clinical examination, ECG and Rx of the heart and esophagus). The incidence of chagasic cardiopathy in the cases with positive serology but previously assymptomatic was 38.3% during the ten year period. On the other hand there was a deterioration in 24% of the patients with chagasic cardiopathy since the first examination. Considering all clinical forms of the disease in 34.5% of the patients the clinical situation deteriorated, in 57.3% there was no change and in 8.2% the situation improved. The general mortality in the period was 23% in the chagasic group and 10.6% in the control group, but the lethality by cardiopathy was 17% in chagasic group and only 23.3% in the control group. The mortality was twice as high in males than in females, mainly in the age group from 30 to 59 years.     

HERSIM: a microcomputer program designed to compute the limits of conversion for real homogeneous isothermal enzymic reactors

BIOCHEMISTRY OF CEREBRAL TUMOURS: SODIUM, POTASSIUM, CALCIUM, PHOSPHORUS, MAGNESIUM, COPPER AND SULPHUR CONTENTS OF ASTROCYTOMATA, MEDULLOBLASTOMATA AND GLIOBLASTOMATA MULTIFORME

Abstract— Twenty-nine autopsy specimens of intracerebral tumours (nine astrocytomata, ten medulloblastomata and ten glioblastomata multiforme), as well as samples of peritumoral and apparently normal brain tissue, have been studied for Na, K, P, Ca, Mg, Cu, and S contents.
The tumour tissue, irrespective of the histological characteristics, as compared to the 'normal' and perineoplastic tissues, showed higher concentration of Ca, Mg, Cu and S. The peritumoral tissue, regardless of the tumour type, showed a higher concentration of Cu than the 'normal' control brain.
The more malignant glioblatomata and medulloblastomata. The Cu levels did not show a significant diference.     

Sex expression in floral buds of Acorn squash

Summary Staminate flowers of the Acorn squash (Cucurbita pepo, cv. Table Queen) are initiated monosexually, pistillate flowers are initiated bisexually. Pistillate flower primordia are physiologically bisexual from a stage below 0.3 mm until they are 0.8 mm in width.Male and female floral buds were cultivated on White's medium, modified according to Galun et al. (1963). In excised female floral buds the relative development of stamens is better than in in-situ floral buds; the opposite relationship holds for ovary development. The smaller the bud at excision, the greater the stamen growth and the lesser the ovary growth, both in absolute and relative terms. Although smaller pistillate floral buds cultured in vitro showed a greater increase in maleness than larger ones, there was no difference in the percentage of female buds between explants of the two sizes when originating from the mixed stem region (that is, the stem region carrying male and female flowers). Addition of 3-indoleacetic acid and the anti-auxin p-chlorophenoxyisobutyric acid to standard medium in equal amounts resulted in somewhat better development of excised floral buds than addition of each of these compounds alone.The percentage of female buds among explants originating from identical nodes was not significantly influenced by 3-indoleacetic acid or p-chlorophenoxyisobutyric acid.Weizmann Memorial Fellow. Lipid Peroxidation. Definition of Experimental Conditions for Selective Study of the Propagation and Termination Phases

To find experimental conditions to selectively study the propagation phase of lipoperoxidation we studied the lipoperoxidation, catalyzed by FeCl₂, of liposomes in a buffering condition where Fe²⁺ autoxidation and oxygen active species generation does not occur. Liposomes from egg yolk phosphatidylcholine. prepared by vortex mixing, do not oxidize Fe²⁺: on the contrary they oxidize Fe²⁺ when prepared by ultrasonic irradiation. Dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine liposomes prepared by ultrasonic irradiation do not oxidize Fe²⁺. During sonication polyunsaturated fatty acid residues autoxidize and lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) are generated. Only when LOOH are present in the liposimes Fe²⁺ oxidizes and its rate of oxidation depends on the amount of LOOH in the assay. The reaction results in the generation of both LOOH and thiobarbituric acid reactive material (TBAR): it is inhibited by butylated hydroxytoluene and has a acidic pH optimum; it is not inhibited by catalase and OH' scavengers. The reaction studied. thus, appears to be the chain branching and propagation phase of lipoperoxidation. When we studied the dependence of Fe²⁺ oxidation, LOOH and TBAR generation on FeCl₂ concentration, we observed that at high FeCl₂ concentrations the termination phase of lipoperoxidation was prevalent. Thus. by selecting the appropriate FeCl₂ concentration the proposed experimental system allows study of either the propagation or the termination phase of lipoperoxidation.     

Nonvitellogenic female protein in Musca domestica

During vitellogenesis in Musca domestica, a major hemolymph protein, in addition to vitellogenin, appears preferentially in females. This protein is synthesized by the adult fat bodies, secreted into the hemolymph, and is not taken up by the ovaries during vitellogenesis. We have designated this protein nonvitellogenic female protein (NVFP). It is composed of only one type of polypeptide (M_r=70,000) and occurs in two different forms. Synthesis of NVFP is induced by a protein diet, attaining maximum concentrations in females at the middle of the gonotrophic cycle. In males its maximum concentration never surpasses 10% of the concentration in females. The quantitative variation of the NVFP is cyclic and coincident with the gonotrophic cycles of Musca domestica.
