Scatter hoarding by kangaroo rats (Dipodomys merriami) and pilferage from their caches

We observed radio-implanted Merriam's kangaroo rats disposingof 10-g bonanzas of rolled oats in 48 trials in the field. Theprincipal determinant of the initial disposition of discoveredfood was apparently its distance from the day burrow: food foundwithin about 10m was mainly larder hoarded, whereas food encounteredfarther afield was usually dispersed immediately in shallowcaches. Cache sites were newly dug for the purpose and not reused;most caches were nearer the current day burrow than was thefood source, but a few were placed far from both the cacher'sday burrow and its habitual nocturnal range. An experiment withartificial caches indicated that security from discovery increaseswith spacing and with proximity to perennial shrubs. Nine kangaroorats cached dyed food, and fecal dye traces revealed extensivepilferage from five of them, by both conspecifics and otherrodent species. Limited evidence indicates that food encounterednearer home and initially larder hoarded was more secure frompilferage than food initially scattered, and yet kangaroo ratswere observed to scatter caches soon after initial larder hoarding.A kangaroo rat whose dyed stores escaped pilferage fed fromthem at intervals for at least 12 days. Even cachers who incurredpilferage made as much, or more, use of their caches as anythief, suggesting that scattering caches may be a defense againstcatastrophic losses.     

Chemosystematic implications of flavonoids in Aniba riparia

The trunk wood of Aniba riparia (Nees) Mez (Lauraceae) contains flavokawin-B, (2S)-pinostrombin, (2S)-5, 7-di-O-methylpinocembrin, (2R, 3R)-5, 7-di-O-methylpinobanksin, izalpinin and 3,5, 7-tri-O-methylgalangin. Structural comparison of these flavonoids with the pyrones and neolignans, which characterized all previously examined Aniba spp., leads to a chemical classification of the genus.     

A mitochondrial DNA phylogeny indicates close relationships between populations of Lutzomyia whitmani (Diptera: Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) from the rain-forest regions of Amaz?nia and northeast Brazil.

Phylogenetic analysis of all 31 described mitochondrial (cytochrome b) haplotypes of Lutzomyia whitmani demonstrated that new material from the State of Rond?nia, in southwest Amaz?nia, forms a clade within a lineage found only in the rain-forest regions of Brazil. This rain-forest lineage also contains two other clades of haplotypes, one from eastern Amaz?nia and one from the Atlantic forest zone of northeast Brazil (including the type locality of the species in Ilhéus, State of Bahia). These findings do not favour recognizing two allopatric cryptic species of L. whitmani, one associated with the silvatic transmission of Leishmania shawi in southeast Amaz?nia and the other with the peridomestic transmission of Le. braziliensis in northeast Brazil. Instead, they suggest that there is (or has been in the recent past) a continuum of inter-breeding populations of L. whitmani in the rain-forest regions of Brazil.     

Nusinersen treatment and cerebrospinal fluid neurofilaments: An explorative study on Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 3 patients

The antisense oligonucleotide Nusinersen has been recently licensed to treat spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Since SMA type 3 is characterized by variable phenotype and milder progression, biomarkers of early treatment response are urgently needed. We investigated the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) concentration of neurofilaments in SMA type 3 patients treated with Nusinersen as a potential biomarker of treatment efficacy. The concentration of phosphorylated neurofilaments heavy chain (pNfH) and light chain (NfL) in the CSF of SMA type 3 patients was evaluated before and after six months since the first Nusinersen administration, performed with commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Clinical evaluation of SMA patients was performed with standardized motor function scales. Baseline neurofilament levels in patients were comparable to controls, but significantly decreased after six months of treatment, while motor functions were only marginally ameliorated. No significant correlation was observed between the change in motor functions and that of neurofilaments over time. The reduction of neurofilament levels suggests a possible early biochemical effect of treatment on axonal degeneration, which may precede changes in motor performance. Our study mandates further investigations to assess neurofilaments as a marker of treatment response.

Near Neutral pH Redox Flow Battery with Low Permeability and Long‐Lifetime Phosphonated Viologen Active Species

A highly stable phosphonate‐functionalized viologen is introduced as the redox‐active material in a negative potential electrolyte for aqueous redox flow batteries (ARFBs) operating at nearly neutral pH. The solubility is 1.23 m and the reduction potential is the lowest of any substituted viologen utilized in a flow battery, reaching ?0.462 V versus SHE at pH = 9. The negative charges in both the oxidized and the reduced states of 1,1′‐bis(3‐phosphonopropyl)‐[4,4′‐bipyridine]‐1,1′‐diium dibromide ( BPP?Vi ) effect low permeability in cation exchange membranes and suppress a bimolecular mechanism of viologen decomposition. A flow battery pairing BPP?Vi with a ferrocyanide‐based positive potential electrolyte across an inexpensive, non‐fluorinated cation exchange membrane at pH = 9 exhibits an open‐circuit voltage of 0.9 V and a capacity fade rate of 0.016% per day or 0.00069% per cycle. Overcharging leads to viologen decomposition, causing irreversible capacity fade. This work introduces extremely stable, extremely low‐permeating and low reduction potential redox active materials into near neutral ARFBs.
