In 1849, Isaac Lea named Sauropus primaevus for footprints from Mount Carbon, Pennsylvania, USA, then the oldest fossil vertebrate footprints reported. In 1902, O. P. Hay constructed a new ichnogenus Palaeosauropus for this ichnospecies. Palaeosauropus has been one of the most frequently reported Mississippian footprint ichnogenera in North America and remains a valid ichnotaxon. The holotype of Palaeosauropus (= “Sauropus”) primaevus (referred to as P. primaevus), consisting of a single manus/pes pair, is described and illustrated in Lea (1853) Lea, I. 1853. On the fossil foot-marks in the Red Sandstones of Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Penna. Transactions of the American Philosophical Society, 10(new series): 307315.  [Google Scholar] and is housed at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (ANS9752). Lea's large specimen of P. primaevus (approximately 86 cm by 53 cm), that included a trackway of six manus/pes pairs, described and illustrated in 1853 and 1855, was a combination of ANS9752 and a second specimen represented by a plaster cast housed at the National Museum of Natural History (USNM487148). Historical documents and examination of the Mauch Chunk Formation at Mount Carbon, Pennsylvania, enabled the identification of Lea's tracksite, originally reported to be a few hundred feet (about 75 m) from the former Mount Carbon Hotel. Our forensic evidence indicates the type locality for P. primaevus is approximately 90 m south from the southwest corner of Centre and Main Streets in Mount Carbon, Pennsylvania, with geographical coordinates of N 40° 40' 25.7”, W 76° 11' 14.9”. The type locality is within the middle member of the Mauch Chunk Formation, a fluvial sequence of late Mississippian (Visean) Age.  相似文献

Tetrapod footprints have a fossil record in rocks of Devonian-Neogene age. Three principal factors limit their use in biostratigraphy and biochronology (palichnostratigraphy): invalid ichnotaxa based on extramorphological variants, slow apparent evolutionary turnover rates and facies restrictions. The ichnotaxonomy of tetrapod footprints has generally been oversplit, largely due to a failure to appreciate extramorphological variation. Thus, many tetrapod footprint ichnogenera and most ichnospecies are useless phantom taxa that confound biostratigraphic correlation and biochronological subdivision. Tracks rarely allow identification of a genus or species known from the body fossil record. Indeed, almost all tetrapod footprint ichnogenera are equivalent to a family or a higher taxon (order, superorder, etc.) based on body fossils. This means that ichnogenera necessarily have much longer temporal ranges and therefore slower apparent evolutionary turnover rates than do body fossil genera. Because of this, footprints cannot provide as refined a subdivision of geological time as do body fossils. The tetrapod footprint record is much more facies controlled than the tetrapod body fossil record. The relatively narrow facies window for track preservation, and the fact that tracks are almost never transported, redeposited or reworked, limits the facies that can be correlated with any track-based biostratigraphy.

A Devonian-Neogene global biochronology based on tetrapod footprints generally resolves geologic time about 20 to 50 percent as well as does the tetrapod body fossil record. The following globally recognizable time intervals can be based on the track record: (1) Late Devonian; (2) Mississippian; (3) Early-Middle Pennsylvanian; (4) Late Pennsylvanian; (5) Early Permian; (6) Late Permian; (7) Early-Middle Triassic; (8) late Middle Triassic; (9) Late Triassic; (10) Early Jurassic; (11) Middle-Late Jurassic; (12) Early Cretaceous; (13) Late Cretaceous; (14) Paleogene; (15) Neogene. Tetrapod footprints are most valuable in establishing biostratigraphic datum points, and this is their primary value to understanding the stratigraphic (temporal) dimension of tetrapod evolution.  相似文献

Palaeosauropus primaevus is a tetrapod footprint ichnotaxon first described from the Upper Mississippian (Visean) Mauch Chunk Formation near Pottsville, Pennsylvania, United States. Our relocation of the type locality and stratigraphic horizon of P. primaevus, a long-available but unstudied collection of tetrapod footprints from these strata, and our new collections allow a much fuller characterization of this ichnotaxon and the range of extramorphological variation encompassed by it. P. primaevus is characterized as the footprints of a quadruped with a pentadactyl pes and a tetradactyl manus, in which the pes frequently oversteps the manus and with which tail drags are common. In the manus, all digits are relatively broad and have rounded tips, digit III is longest, and digit IV is more widely separated from digit III than the other digits are from each other. The pes has five digits that are also wide and blunt-tipped, digit IV is longest, and digit V projects nearly laterally. P. primaevus is the track of a relatively large temnospondyl (~400 mm gleno-acetabular length) and documents the Mississippian presence of such large amphibians long before their body fossil record. Palaeosauropus also occurs in Mississippian strata in Indiana and is distinguished from the geologically younger but similar temnospondyl footprint ichnogenus Limnopus by its relatively narrower manus and pes that lack broad and rounded sole impressions.  相似文献

Intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP) is an enzyme of the brush border of the enterocyte. The activity of IAP biphasically depends on calcium. Although calcium increases IAP activity, when calcium is higher than 20 mmole/L, IAP activity decreases and the amount of an aggregated form increases. The reversibility of the effect of calcium and the aggregation process are unknown. The isoelectric point of the enzyme was higher in the presence of calcium, but was the same for the enzyme and the aggregated form. The treatment with EGTA after calcium addition did not restore the enzymatic activity but produced desaggregation of the enzyme and increase in the monomeric subunits of IAP. It is concluded that the binding of calcium does not produce important modifications on the structure of the protein, that the inhibitory effect is not reversible and that calcium could be involved in the stability of the structure of the enzyme.  相似文献

The rate of vegetation recovery from boreal wildfire influences terrestrial carbon cycle processes and climate feedbacks by affecting the surface energy budget and land‐atmosphere carbon exchange. Previous forest recovery assessments using satellite optical‐infrared normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and tower CO2 eddy covariance techniques indicate rapid vegetation recovery within 5–10 years, but these techniques are not directly sensitive to changes in vegetation biomass. Alternatively, the vegetation optical depth (VOD) parameter from satellite passive microwave remote sensing can detect changes in canopy biomass structure and may provide a useful metric of post‐fire vegetation response to inform regional recovery assessments. We analyzed a multi‐year (2003–2010) satellite VOD record from the NASA AMSR‐E (Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS) sensor to estimate forest recovery trajectories for 14 large boreal fires from 2004 in Alaska and Canada. The VOD record indicated initial post‐fire canopy biomass recovery within 3–7 years, lagging NDVI recovery by 1–5 years. The VOD lag was attributed to slower non‐photosynthetic (woody) and photosynthetic (foliar) canopy biomass recovery, relative to the faster canopy greenness response indicated from the NDVI. The duration of VOD recovery to pre‐burn conditions was also directly proportional (P < 0.01) to satellite (moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer) estimated tree cover loss used as a metric of fire severity. Our results indicate that vegetation biomass recovery from boreal fire disturbance is generally slower than reported from previous assessments based solely on satellite optical‐infrared remote sensing, while the VOD parameter enables more comprehensive assessments of boreal forest recovery.  相似文献

Aim

To determine whether expression of a cyanobacterial flavodoxin in soil bacteria of agronomic interest confers protection against the widely used herbicides paraquat and atrazine.

Methods and Results

The model bacterium Escherichia coli, the symbiotic nitrogen‐fixing bacterium Ensifer meliloti and the plant growth‐promoting rhizobacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens Aur6 were transformed with expression vectors containing the flavodoxin gene of Anabaena variabilis. Expression of the cyanobacterial protein was confirmed by Western blot. Bacterial tolerance to oxidative stress was tested in solid medium supplemented with hydrogen peroxide, paraquat or atrazine. In all three bacterial strains, flavodoxin expression enhanced tolerance to the oxidative stress provoked by hydrogen peroxide and by the reactive oxygen species‐inducing herbicides, witnessed by the enhanced survival of the transformed bacteria in the presence of these oxidizing agents.

Conclusions

Flavodoxin overexpression in beneficial soil bacteria confers tolerance to oxidative stress and improves their survival in the presence of the herbicides paraquat and atrazine. Flavodoxin could be considered as a general antioxidant resource to face oxidative challenges in different micro‐organisms.

Significance and Impact of the study

The use of plant growth‐promoting rhizobacteria or nitrogen‐fixing bacteria with enhanced tolerance to oxidative stress in contaminated soils is of significant agronomic interest. The enhanced tolerance of flavodoxin‐expressing bacteria to atrazine and paraquat points to potential applications in herbicide‐treated soils.  相似文献

Objectives

The mechanisms of obesity associated reproductive complications remain poorly understood. Endometrial mesenchymal stem-cells are critical for cyclic renewal and uterine function. Recently, W5C5+ cells, with high clonogenicity, capable of producing endometrial stroma in vivo, have been described. We sought to investigate the abundance and cloning efficiency of W5C5+ and W5C5 endometrial cells in relation to Body Mass Index, age and reproductive outcome.

Design

W5C5+ and W5C5 cells were purified from mid-luteal endometrial biopsies (n = 54) by magnetic bead separation and subjected to in vitro colony-forming assays.

Results

First trimester pregnancy losses were significantly higher in obese subjects (n = 12) compared to overweight (n = 20) and subjects with normal Body Mass Index (n = 22) (P<0.05, P<0.01, respectively). W5C5+ cells (%) were significantly lower in obese subjects compared to subjects with normal Body Mass Index (P<0.05). W5C5+ cloning efficiency was significantly lower in obese subjects compared to overweight and subjects with normal Body Mass Index (P<0.05, respectively). W5C5 cloning efficiency was significantly lower in obese subjects compared to subjects with normal Body Mass Index (P<0.05). Body Mass Index was significantly negatively correlated with W5C5+ cloning efficiency and W5C5 cloning efficiency (P<0.01, respectively), and positively correlated with first trimester loss (P<0.01). We found no significant results with age (P>0.05).

Conclusions

Our observations suggest that the regenerative capacity and plasticity of the endometrium of obese women is suboptimal, which in turn may account for the increased risk of reproductive complications associated with obesity.  相似文献

None of the polymorphic variants of the IL2RA gene found associated with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) was shown to have a functional effect. To test if the epigenetic variation could play a role at this locus, we studied the methylation of 6 CpGs located within the proximal promoter of IL2RA gene in 252 T1D patients compared with 286 age-matched controls. We found that DNA methylation at CpGs −373 and −456 was slightly but significantly higher in patients than in controls (40.4±4.6 vs 38.3±5.4, p = 1.4E4; 91.4±2.8 vs 89.5±5.3, p = 1.8E-6), while other CpG showed a strictly comparable methylation. Among 106 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) located in the neighboring 180kb region, we found that 28 SNPs were associated with DNA methylation at CpG −373. Sixteen of these SNPs were known to be associated with T1D. Our findings suggest that the effect of IL2RA risk alleles on T1D may be partially mediated through epigenetic changes.  相似文献
