Competition for resources is a major organizing principle in communities of organisms that share similar ecological niches. Niche separation by means of exploitation or interference competition was investigated in two taxa of crop‐inhabiting spiders that overlap in microhabitat use and have similar web design. Competition for prey and web sites was tested in microcosm experiments with the most common species that build sheet‐webs: Enoplognatha gemina (Theridiidae) and Alioranus pastoralis (Linyphiidae). A field survey over the crop season provided data on spatial and temporal dispersion of Enoplognatha spp. (Theridiidae) and linyphiid spiders (Linyphiidae) and on availability of prey over the season. In the microcosm experiments, both taxa took springtails as prey, but only Enoplognatha fed on aphids. Differences in diet, however, could not be attributed to either exploitative or interference competition. Spatial separation of websites was attained by vertical displacement of webs in the vegetation (Enoplognatha) and by avoidance of patches occupied by conspecific or heterospecific individuals (linyphiids). In the field, densities of linyphiids and Enoplognatha were correlated negatively and webs were over‐dispersed relative to a random distribution. Both taxa colonized the field at the start of the season; linyphiids colonized as adults, quickly reproduced, and had a second adult peak; Enoplognatha matured in the middle of the season and their numbers remained fairly constant over the season. The combined experimental manipulations and field data suggest that niche separation occurs at different scales. The hypothesis of competition for websites was partially supported, while prey preference (or tolerance) and temporal differences in life history stages also may explain the negative correlations between densities of the two taxa. 相似文献

Diet restriction increases longevity while reducing fecundity in a broad range of organisms. However, there are exceptions to this rule, and the causes of these exceptions remain unclear. One hypothesis is that short‐lived, semelparous organisms gain no benefit from increased longevity regardless of nutritional resources. Another hypothesis is that organisms may alter their behaviour to compensate for nutrient deficiencies. We examined these hypotheses in the colonial orb‐weaving spider Cyrtophora citricola. Sexual cannibalism is frequent in this species so that females are long lived and interoparous while males are semelparous. Because of these differing sexual strategies, we predicted that the common pattern of increased longevity under diet restriction would hold for females but not for males. We also investigated in a semi‐natural setting whether spiders could compensate for diet restriction by altering their feeding behaviour. Diet‐restricted females produced fewer offspring but lived longer than well‐fed females, while diet had no effect on male longevity. Despite being semelparous, virgin males were quite long‐lived, suggesting that potential lifespan is relatively unimportant in determining the effects of diet restriction. Contrary to our predictions, females were unable to compensate for their restricted diet by altering their foraging behaviour. Instead, semi‐natural conditions increased the differences between spiders on high and low diets, suggesting that the effects of diet restriction can be pervasive under natural conditions. 相似文献

Trace amounts of four different, well-defined species of phosphatidyl[N-methyl-14C]choline ([14C]PC), differing in their fatty acyl constituents, were introduced exclusively into the outer membrane leaflet of the intact erythrocyte by using a PC-specific phospholipid transfer protein. The rate of transbilayer equilibration of these probe molecules was calculated from the time-dependent decay in specific radioactivity of the PC pool in the outer monolayer, which was discriminated from that in the inner leaflet by treating the intact cells with phospholipase A2 in the presence of sphingomyelinase C. At 37 degrees C, 1,2-dipalmitoyl-, 1,2-dioleoyl-, 1-palmitoyl-2-linoleoyl- and 1-palmitoyl-2-arachidonoyl-PC revealed halftime values for the rate of their transbilayer equilibration of 26.3 +/- 4.4, 14.4 +/- 3.5, 2.9 +/- 1.7 and 9.7 +/- 1.6 h, respectively. 相似文献

Low frequencies of apparently fragile X [fra(X)] chromosomes have been reported in normal control, short-term, whole blood cultures, and they have been noted in both amniocyte and fetal blood cultures. However, there is currently no universal agreement on the lowest frequency for fra(X)(q27) that is diagnostic for the fragile X syndrome. Here, we present our observations on low levels of apparently fra(X) chromosomes in normal samples. We observed frequencies of 0.5% in short-term whole blood cultures and 0.9% in amniotic fluid cell cultures. In 1982, Steinbach et al. described nonspecific telomeric structural changes (TSC) and suggested that such low frequencies of apparently fra(X) chromosomes in normal material may be occurring by the same mechanism that is responsible for TSC formation. To determine if TSC formation can explain the significant baseline frequencies of fra(X) in normal controls, 10,457 cells were screened from 178 individuals referred for fra(X) analysis. Our findings indicated that TSC are not randomly distributed across chromosomes but tend to occur at specific sites. Based on our observations, we offer the hypothesis that the low frequency of apparent fra(X) in normal individuals may be due to nonrandom TSC distribution. 相似文献

Summary In the Namib Desert dunes, the web of Seothyra sp. (Eresidae) comprises sticky silk lining the edges of a horizontal mat on the sand surface. The spider sits in a silk-lined burrow attached to the mat. Arthropods become entangled in the sticky silk of the mat and are attacked and pulled into the burrow by the spider. We investigated the influence of sand surface temperature on the activity of spiders during the summer. We determined the range of thermal conditions encountered by spiders, their temperature tolerance and the influence of temperature on foraging activity and prey handling behavior. The environmental temperatures available to Seothyra vary from 17–33° C at the coolest time of day to 33–73° C at the hottest. When prevented from retreating into burrows, spiders showed signs of thermal stress at about 49° C, whereas unrestrained spiders continued to forage at web temperatures above 65° C by moving between the hot surface mat and the cooler burrow. Spiders responded quicker to prey stimuli during the hot hours of the day and completed prey capture sequences in significantly less time at surface temperatures above 49° C than below. Furthermore, captured arthropods succumbed more quickly at high surface temperatures. Our study supports the hypothesis that web design and thermoregulatory behaviors enable Seothyra to hunt under extreme thermal conditions. 相似文献

The aggregation of platelets induced by ADP, collagen, or epinephrine in human platelet-rich plasma is inhibited by long chain acyl-CoA thioesters. Palmityl-CoA exerts a concentration dependent inhibition of collagen-induced aggregation of the primary and secondary waves of ADP-induced aggregation. Palmitlyl-CoA also inhibits the secondary wave of epinephrine-induced aggregation but has no effect on the primary wave. The inhibitory effect of palmityl-CoA can be reversed by addition of excess ADP and cannot be attributed to a detergent action. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association, previously reported in three European studies, between ownership of pet birds and the risk of lung cancer. DESIGN: A population based case-control study with a structured questionnaire administered by telephone. SETTING: Missouri, a midwestern state in the United States with a population of about 5 million. SUBJECTS: All newly diagnosed cases of primary lung cancer in women aged 30-84 years in Missouri from 1 January 1993 to 31 January 1994 reported to the state cancer registry were invited to participate (n = 652); and 629 population based controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Odds ratios were computed in relation to whether or not the study subject ever kept pet birds, the type of bird kept, and several measures of intensity or duration of exposure. Odds ratios were adjusted for smoking. RESULTS: The odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for the development of lung cancer associated with keeping pet birds was 0.84 (0.65 to 1.09). The results were similar for the type of pet bird kept, the number of birds kept, the location of the bird in the house, and the duration of ownership. CONCLUSION: The keeping of pet birds carries no excess risk for the development of lung cancer. 相似文献

Consistency in gold chloride staining is essential for anatomical analysis of sensory nerve endings. The gold chloride stain for this purpose has been modified by many investigators, but often yields inconsistent staining, which makes it difficult to differentiate structures and to determine nerve ending distribution in large tissue samples. We introduce additional steps and major changes to the modified Gairns’ protocol. We controlled the temperature and mixing rate during tissue staining to achieve consistent staining and complete solution penetration. We subjected samples to sucrose dehydration to improve cutting efficiency. We then exposed samples to a solution containing lemon juice, formic acid and paraformaldehyde to produce optimal tissue transparency with minimal tissue deformity. We extended the time for gold chloride impregnation 1.5 fold. Gold chloride was reduced in the labrum using 25% formic acid in water for 18 h and in the capsule using 25% formic acid in citrate phosphate buffer for 2 h. Citrate binds gold nanoparticles, which minimizes aggregation in the tissue. We stored samples in fresh ultrapure water at 4° C to slow reduction and to maintain color contrast in the tissue. Tissue samples were embedded in Tissue Tek and sectioned at 80 and 100 μm instead of using glycerin and teasing the tissue apart as in Gairns’ modified gold chloride method. We attached sections directly to gelatin subbed slides after sectioning with a cryostat. The slides then were processed and coverslipped with Permount. Staining consistency was demonstrated throughout the tissue sections and neural structures were clearly identifiable. 相似文献
