Computers are poised to become key players in the delivery of health care, but are physicians ready for them? A recent conference on medical communication in the electronic era examined the potential of computers to assist in diagnosis, provide continuing medical education, disseminate evidence and research findings, and simplify practice management. However, delegates were told that even though many medical practices are computerized, it is often staff members and not physicians who use the technology. Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) 1 and 2 were measured in the adrenal glands of rats undergoing either compensatory growth following left unilateral adrenalectomy or adrenal regeneration following bilateral adrenal enucleation. In normal rat adrenal gland, the tissue concentration of IGF2 (7.45 +/- 0.99 pg/micrograms protein) wa higher than IGF1 (1.26 +/- 0.23 pg/micrograms protein), both peptides being more abundant in the inner zones of the adrenal gland compared to the capsule-glomerulosa. During compensatory growth of the right adrenal gland, IGF1 and 2 increased significantly compared with control right adrenal glands at 24 h following left unilateral adrenalectomy (P less than 0.001). At 68 h, the increase remained significant for IGF1 (P = 0.012). The two peptides were measured in the regenerating adrenal gland at 7, 14 and 21 days following bilateral enucleation. Whilst there was a trend towards an increase in the IGF1 and 2 content of regenerating adrenal glands, the increase was significant only for IGF2 in the left adrenal gland at 21 days following enucleation. Plasma IGF1 and 2 did not increase compared to controls during the experiments (110.97 +/- 1.95 and 46.33 ng/ml, respectively), suggesting that the changes in tissue IGF reflect increased local production during rapid growth of the adrenal gland. 相似文献

The partitioning of limited resources commonly explains how different species can coexist within the same ecological community. In this 2010 study, the diets of three coexisting freshwater fishes (Cape galaxias Galaxias zebratus, n = 27; Cape kurper Sandelia capensis, n = 60; Breede River redfin Pseudobarbus burchelli, n = 77) were characterised and compared in three headwater streams in South Africa's Cape Fold Ecoregion using gut contents and stable isotope analyses. These data were analysed to ascertain whether the three species exploit distinct trophic niches. Both approaches provided evidence that these species occupy different trophic niches, though with some overlap. However, dietary differences among sites were not consistent and were probably influenced by site-specific factors like resource availability. Pseudobarbus burchelli had a broader niche breadth at Tierkloof Stream than the other two species, but not at Waaihoek or Tierstel Streams. Our results also suggest that P. burchelli consumed a more omnivorous diet than do the other two species, whereas S. capensis occupied a higher trophic position than the other two species and consumed vertebrates. Our findings suggest that these species occupy non-equivalent feeding niches in Cape Fold Ecoregion headwater streams, and that diet partitioning might facilitate their coexistence in these systems. 相似文献

The purpose of these studies was to test the hypothesis that carotid chemoreceptor activity is necessary for postnatal maturation of the ventilatory control system. By using a lateral surgical access, 17 piglets were carotid body denervated (CBD) and 14 were sham denervated at 3-25 days of age. After surgery, there was no irregular breathing in any group. There was no significant hypoventilation when CBD was performed at less than 5 days of age (n = 5) and only a mild (arterial PCO(2) 5 Torr; P < 0.05) to moderate, transient (arterial PCO(2) 8 Torr; P < 0.5) hypoventilation in piglets denervated at 10-15 (n = 6) and 20-25 (n = 6) days of age, respectively. Three weeks after surgery, both breathing of a hypoxic gas mixture and jugular venous NaCN injections elicited a hyperpnea in the CBD piglets that was attenuated compared with that in sham CBD piglets. In the CBD piglets, there was no response to injections of NaCN in the carotid arteries, but there was a response to NaCN injected into the proximal descending aorta, suggesting the residual peripheral chemosensitivity was of aortic origin. Carotid chemoreceptor-intact piglets had carotid and aortic NaCN chemosensitivity by 2 days of age. The carotid response persisted for the 40 days of the study, but the aortic reflex persisted only until approximately 8 days of age. We conclude that 1) the major effect of CBD per se in neonatal piglets is age-dependent hypoventilation and 2) there is a high degree of plasticity in peripheral chemosensitivity in neonates that may contribute to minimizing the changes in breathing after CBD. 相似文献

Frequent episodes of algal‐related tastes and odors (T & O) in drinking waters in metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona prompted initiation of a three‐year project in July 1999 to investigate the occurrence of T & O metabolites and to develop a comprehensive management strategy to reduce the problems in drinking water supplies in arid environments. Two metabolites, 2‐methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin, have been identified as compounds responsible for the earthy‐musty tastes and odors in water supplies. Both were detected in the water supply system, including source rivers, reservoirs, canal delivery system and water treatment plants. Higher concentrations of MIB and geosmin occurred in distribution canals than in the upstream reservoirs indicating that significant production of the T & O compounds occurs within the canal system. A baseline‐monitoring program has been established for the complex water supply system, with special emphasis on the canal system. Efforts are underway to investigate possible correlations between physical/chemical parameters, algal composition and biomass, with the occurrence of MIB and geosmin. In addition, several physical and chemical treatments are planned for the canal system to reduce algal growth and related MIB and geosmin concentrations. 相似文献
