Late results of free-muscle flaps and delayed bone grafting in the secondary treatment of open distal tibial fractures 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Since no current studies reflect the long-term function of patients accurately categorized and uniformly managed for the same degree and location of tibial injury, seven individuals with type IIIB open distal tibial fractures were studied prospectively for 2 to 4 years after debridement, free-muscle transfer, and delayed autologous bone grafting. Lymphedema, transient drainage, poor ankle motion, limb shortening, nonunion, and delayed union were all significant problems. On average, the patients endured over six operations, 2 months of hospitalization, and a year's course of physical rehabilitation. The study indicates that, although popular, such a regimen is not without important shortcomings. This experience has influenced our selection of and counseling for patients in whom we are contemplating such management. 相似文献

Despite a reduction in exploitation of salmon stocks throughout the NE Atlantic, there continues to be a decline in many populations. The factors regulating these populations remain poorly understood, although there is evidence that environmental conditions experienced in freshwater can effect survival in the marine environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of a brominated flame retardant (hexabromocyclododecane, HBCD) on the parr-smolt transformation in juvenile salmon. It is during this pre-adaptive period to marine life that olfactory imprinting to the natal river is considered to occur. Fish were exposed to low levels of HBCD for 30 days over the peak smoltification period in freshwater, and then transferred to clean seawater for 20 days. Fish were sampled weekly to assess changes in some of the physiological parameters associated with smoltification, and olfactory response to conspecific smolt urine was measured using an electro-olfactogram (EOG). Exposure to HBCD did not affect seawater adaptability, although there was some disruption of plasma thyroid hormone levels, as well as a reduction in olfactory function to conspecific smolt urine. The results are discussed in relation to the marine survival and successful homing of adult salmon. 相似文献

Methyltransferases associated with type III restriction–modification (RM) systems are phase-variably expressed in a variety of pathogenic bacteria. NgoAXP, the type III RM system encoded by Neisseria gonorrhoeae , was characterized in this study. The cloned resngoAXP and ngoAXPmod genes were expressed in Escherichia coli strains. The restriction and modification activities of NgoAXP were confirmed in vivo by the λ phage restriction and modification test and in vitro by the methylation of DNA substrates in the presence of [ methyl -3 H]AdoMet. As in all known type III systems, the restriction activity needed the presence of both genes, while the presence of the ngoAXPmod gene was sufficient for DNA methylation. Following its overexpression, the DNA methyltransferase M.NgoAXP was purified to apparent homogeneity using metal affinity chromatography. The specific sequence recognized by this enzyme was determined as a nonpalindromic sequence: 5'-CCACC-3', in which the adenine residue is methylated. We observed that in E. coli cells, the expression of the restriction phenotype associated with NgoAXP switched randomly. This phase variation was associated with the change in the number of pentanucleotide repeats (5'-CCAAC/G-3') present at the 5'-end of the coding region of the ngoAXPmod gene. 相似文献

The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is an important transmembrane glycoprotein kinase involved the initiation or perpetuation of signal transduction cascades within cells. These processes occur after EGFR binds to a ligand [epidermal growth factor (EGF)], thus inducing its dimerization and tyrosine autophosphorylation. Previous publications have highlighted the importance of glycosylation and dimerization for promoting proper function of the receptor and conformation in membranes; however, the effects of these associations on the protein conformational stability have not yet been described. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to characterize the conformational preferences of the monomeric and dimeric forms of the EGFR extracellular domain upon binding to EGF in the presence and absence of N‐glycan moieties. Structural stability analyses revealed that EGF provides the most conformational stability to EGFR, followed by glycosylation and dimerization, respectively. Soil nutrients and water availability interact to influence willow growth and chemistry but not leaf beetle performance 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We investigated the effects of soil nutrient and water availability on the growth and chemistry of the silky willow (Salix sericea Marshall), and on the performance of the imported willow leaf beetle (Plagiodera versicolora Laichartig). Our major aims were to determine whether there are nutrient–water interactions on plant traits and whether this leads to parallel interactions for herbivore performance. We used a 2 × 3 fully factorial design, which consisted of high and low nutrient treatments crossed with dry, field capacity, and flooded water treatments. We found that nutrient additions increased plant growth, but only in field capacity and flooded conditions (nutrient–water interaction). Leaf nitrogen content also depended on the interaction between soil nutrients and water: nutrient addition resulted in a larger increase in foliar nitrogen in the field capacity treatment than in the flooded and dry treatments. Of the two phenolic glycosides measured, salicortin and 2′‐cinnamoylsalicortin, only one was affected by the treatments. 2′‐cinnamoylsalicortin concentration was lower in the high nutrient–dry treatment compared with the other treatments. In contrast to plant responses, there were no interactions found for larval or pupal weight or development time. Nutrient addition led to an increase in female pupal weight, and foliar N was positively correlated with female pupal weight and negatively correlated with female development time. In addition, leaf water was positively correlated with female development time. The lack of interactions for insect performance may stem from the small absolute differences in foliar nitrogen content associated with the interaction between the nutrients and water. Taken together, our results suggest that nutrient–water interactions influence plant traits that are potentially important for insect performance (leaf nitrogen and water), but these interactions do not produce parallel interactions in beetle performance. 相似文献
