With rising urbanization, the presence of urban wildlife is becoming more common, increasing the need for wildlife‐friendly spaces in urban planning. Despite this, understanding is limited to how wildlife exploits urban environments and interacts with human populations, and this is vital to our ability to manage and conserve wildlife in urban habitats. Here, we investigate how two urban mammal species, the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and the European badger (Meles meles), exploit urban environments. Using intensive camera trap surveys, we assessed how habitat and human disturbance influenced the spatiotemporal activity of these species across south‐west London. Firstly, we found elevated activity levels of both species at boundaries and within built‐up areas, suggesting movement paths follow anthropogenic features. However, badgers were most active in woodland, indicating the importance of high cover habitats suitable for setts and foraging. Secondly, we found badger activity levels were negatively affected by human activity, whilst foxes were unaffected. Further investigation suggested foxes may adapt their activity patterns to avoid human disturbance, with badger activity patterns less plastic. Whilst the results of this study are useful for both the conservation and management of urban wildlife populations, these results also show potential factors which either facilitate or limit wildlife from fully exploiting urban environments. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Depression is up to two to three times as common in people with long-term conditions. It negatively affects medical management of disease and self-care behaviors, and leads to poorer quality of life and high costs in primary care. Screening and treatment of depression is increasingly prioritized, but despite initiatives to improve access and quality of care, depression remains under-detected and under-treated, especially in people with long-term conditions. Collaborative care is known to positively affect the process and outcome of care for people with depression and long-term conditions, but its effectiveness outside the USA is still relatively unknown. Furthermore, collaborative care has yet to be tested in settings that resemble more naturalistic settings that include patient choice and the usual care providers. The aim of this study was to test the effectiveness of a collaborative-care intervention, for people with depression and diabetes/coronary heart disease in National Health Service (NHS) primary care, in which low-intensity psychological treatment services are delivered by the usual care provider - Increasing Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services.s. The study also aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the intervention over 6 months of collaborative care, and to assess qualitatively the extent to which collaborative care was implemented in the intervention general practices. METHODS: This is a cluster randomized controlled trial of 30 general practices allocated to either collaborative care or usual care. Fifteen patients per practice will be recruited after a screening exercise to detect patients with recognized depression (greater than or equal to 10 on the nine-symptom Patient Health Questionnaire; PHQ-9). Patients in the collaborative-care arm with recognized depression will be offered a choice of evidence-based low-intensity psychological treatments based on cognitive and behavioral approaches. Patients will be case managed by psychological well-being practitioners employed by IAPT in partnership with a practice nurse and/or general practitioner. The primary outcome will be change in depressive symptoms at 6 months on the 90-item Symptoms Checklist (SCL-90). Secondary outcomes include change in health status, self-care behaviors, and self-efficacy. A qualitative process evaluation will be undertaken with patients and health practitioners to gauge the extent to which the collaborative-care model is implemented, and to explore sustainability beyond the clinical trial. DISCUSSION: COINCIDE will assess whether collaborative care can improve patient-centered outcomes, and evaluate access to and quality of care of co-morbid depression of varying intensity in people with diabetes/coronary heart disease. Additionally, by working with usual care providers such as IAPT, and by identifying and evaluating interventions that are effective and appropriate for routine use in the NHS, the COINCIDE trial offers opportunities to address translational gaps between research and implementation.Trial Registration NumberISRCTN80309252Trial StatusOpen. 相似文献

Studies of oxidative damage during the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) suggest its central role in disease pathogenesis. To investigate levels of nucleic acid oxidation in both early and late stages of AD, levels of multiple base adducts were quantified in nuclear and mitochondrial DNA from the superior and middle temporal gyri (SMTG), inferior parietal lobule (IPL), and cerebellum (CER) of age‐matched normal control subjects, subjects with mild cognitive impairment, preclinical AD, late‐stage AD, and non‐AD neurological disorders (diseased control; DC) using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Median levels of multiple DNA adducts in nuclear and mitochondrial DNA were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) elevated in the SMTG, IPL, and CER in multiple stages of AD and in DC subjects. Elevated levels of fapyguanine and fapyadenine in mitochondrial DNA suggest a hypoxic environment early in the progression of AD and in DC subjects. Overall, these data suggest that oxidative damage is an early event not only in the pathogenesis of AD but is also present in neurodegenerative diseases in general.

The relationship between primary and bacterial production in two dimictic Indiana lakes with different primary productivities was examined during the summer stratification period in 1982. Primary production rates were calculated from rates of H14CO3− incorporation by natural samples, and bacterial production was calculated from rates of [3H-methyl]thymidine incorporation by natural samples. Both vertical and seasonal distributions of bacterial production in the more productive lake (Little Crooked Lake) were strongly influenced by primary production. A lag of about 2 weeks between a burst in primary production and the subsequent response in bacterial production was observed. The vertical distribution of bacterial production in the water column of the less productive lake (Crooked Lake) was determined by the vertical distribution of primary production, but no clear relationship between seasonal maxima of primary and bacterial production in this lake was observed. High rates of bacterial production in Crooked Lake during May indicate the importance of allochthonous carbon washed in by spring rains. Bacterial production accounted for 30.6 and 31.8% of total (primary plus bacterial) production in Crooked Lake and Little Crooked Lake, respectively, from April through October. High rates of bacterial production during late September and October were observed in both lakes. Calculation of the fraction of bacterial production supported by phytoplankton excretion implies an important role for other mechanisms of supplying carbon, such as phytoplankton autolysis. Several factors affecting the calculation of bacterial production from the thymidine incorporation rates in these lakes were examined. 相似文献

Environmental factors such as diet, bedding material and temperature at the time of testing affected a 'model' pharmacological response--pentobarbitone sleeping time--differentially in a range of inbred strains. These results are probably explained by variations in the responses of the strains to constituents of the diets and bedding materials used in the experiments. Differences in the results between experiments suggest that there are also fluctuations in the composition of the diets and bedding materials over time. Strain X environment interactions such as those found here may explain differences in strain rankings between experiments. They would also account for some of the variability in results found between laboratories and within a laboratory over time. 相似文献

In Kingston, Jamaica, it is possible to disentangle racial and environmental factors, both of which influence the size of children, because secondary school children, of similar socio-economic status, can be grouped as being predominantly of African, European, Afro-European or Chinese racial origin. The heights and weights of about 5,000 children, aged 11 to 17 years, were measured. The stature of Africans, Afro-Europeans and Europeans was similar, indicating that in Jamaica the potential height of the African is at least as great as that of the European race. Nitrogen fixation is the primary N source in the highly productive but N-limited North Inlet, SC, USA salt marsh system. The
diverse assemblages of nitrogen-fixing (diazotrophic) bacteria associated with the rhizospheres of the short and tall growth
forms of Spartina alterniflora were analyzed at two sites, Crab Haul Creek and Goat Island, which are in different tidal creek drainage systems in this
marsh. The sites differed in proximity to the main channel for tidal intrusion and in several edaphic parameters. We hypothesized
that either the differing abiotic environmental regimes of the two sites or the variation due to seasonal effects result in
differences in the diazotroph assemblage. Rhizosphere samples were collected seasonally during 1999 and 2000. DNA was purified
and nifH amplified for denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis of diazotroph assemblage composition. Principal components
analysis was used to analyze the binary DGGE band position data. Season strongly influenced assemblage composition and biplots
were used to identify bands that significantly affected the seasonal and site-specific clustering. The types of organisms
that were most responsive to seasonal or site variability were identified on the basis of DGGE band sequences. Seasonally
responsive members of the anaerobic diazotrophs were detected during the winter and postsenescence conditions and may have
been responsible for elevated pore water sulfide concentrations. Sequences from a diverse assemblage of Gammaproteobacteria
were predominant during growth periods of S. alterniflora. Abiotic environmental parameters strongly influenced both the S. alterniflora and the diazotrophic bacterial assemblages associated with this keystone salt marsh plant species. 相似文献

The seasonal distributions of salt marsh free-living and particle-associated bacteria belonging to three subdivisions of the Proteobacteria were determined by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). More than 66% (median = 78%) of total bacterial cells that were stainable with the fluorescent DNA stain Yo-Pro-1 were also detected using the bacterial probe EUB338. The alpha-Proteobacteria, especially those from the marine Rhodobacter group, were abundant on suspended particles and as free-living cells all year round. The marine Rhodobacter group constituted more than 25% of the particle-associated bacteria and more than 18% of the free-living bacteria. Probes specific for three subgroups within the marine Rhodobacter group detected more than 49% of the total marine Rhodobacter group cells. These subgroups displayed different seasonal dynamics. The marine Rhodobacter group is clearly a widespread, diverse and important bacterial lineage in bacterioplankton and particle-associated assemblages in south-eastern United States salt marshes at all times of the year. 相似文献
