Temporal and spatial differences in the emission of calls by pipistrelle bats<Emphasis Type="Italic">Pipistrellus pipistrellus</Emphasis> and<Emphasis Type="Italic">P. pygmaeus</Emphasis>

The number of orientation, feeding and social calls emitted by pipistrelle batsPipistrellus pipistrellus Schreber, 1774 andP. pygmaeus Leach, 1825 was recorded throughout the night at eight different sites. Social calls were unaffected by weather variables, whereas orientation calls and feeding buzzes were both significantly affected by cloud and temperature conditions. The number of emissions of each call type was significantly different between sites, indicating that the bats used different sites for different activities. Significant positive correlations between all three combinations of call types occurred only during the middle of the night, corresponding with the nadir of flying insects. This suggests that bats were engaged in activities other than feeding at this time, such as territory protection or mate attraction.     

Separating the climatic signal from tree-ring width and maximum latewood density records

We propose a technique for separating the climatic signal which is contained in two tree-ring parameters widely used in dendroclimatology. The method is based on the removal of the relationship between tree-ring width (TRW) and maximum latewood density (MXD) observed for narrow tree rings from high latitudes. The new technique is tested on data from three larch stands located along the northern timberline in Eurasia. Correlations were calculated between the temperatures of pentads (five consecutive days), TRW chronologies and MXD chronologies calculated according to the standard and proposed methods. The analysis confirms the great importance of summer temperature for tree radial growth and tree-ring formation. TRW is positively correlated with the temperature of four to eight pentads (depending on the region) at the beginning of the growth season, but MXD as obtained by the standard technique is correlated with temperature over a much longer period. For maximum density series from which the relationship between MXD and TRW has been removed (MXD′), there is a clear correlation with temperatures in the second part of the growing season. These results are consistent with the known dynamics of tree-ring growth in high latitudes and mechanisms of tree-ring formation.     

Biochemical effects of mild iron deficiency and cold acclimatization on rat skeletal muscle

Most of the previous studies on the effects of iron deficiency on skeletal muscle respiratory capacity and work performance have been investigated in severe or moderate iron-deficiency anemia. We report here that even in mild iron deficiency where the hemoglobin concentration was 10 g/dl and the iron stores in livers and spleen were not completely depleted, a marked reduction in succinate dehydrogenase was observed in skeletal muscles but not in heart. Similarly, cytochrome oxidase activities were reduced. Although no significant change in glycerophosphate dehydrogenase was detected in the iron-deficient rats, exposure to cold in this group greatly reduced this enzyme activity. As cold acclimatization accelerates marrow erythropoiesis (20) which in turn, demands more iron, it seems that in the iron-insufficient state, this iron demand for marrow activity may persist at the expense of the tissue iron pool, resulting in a marked reduction in glycerophosphate dehydrogenase activities. Since succinate dehydrogenase plays a significant role in the impairment of mitochondrial function and early fatigue of iron-deficient muscle (11), the present study shows that even in mild iron deficiency, some loss of muscle functions could result as succinate dehydrogenase activities were greatly reduced.     

Role of superoxide in radiation-killing of Escherichia coli and in thymine release from thymidine

The role of superoxide and hydroxyl radicals in gamma-radiation-killing of Escherichia coli K12 was studied in aerated suspensions supplemented with formate, phosphate, superoxide dismutase, catalase and saturated with nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide, which converts e-aq to .OH, caused decreased radiosensitivity. On the other hand, formate, which results in conversion of .OH to .O2-, resulted in an increased radiosensitivity. The results implicated .O2- as a major cause of radiation-mediated cell-killing. The addition of the enzymes, superoxide dismutase or catalase to the E. coli suspensions prior to and during irradiation had no effect on cell survival, indicating that the biologically significant site of generation and action of .O2- is an intracellular one. Further studies were undertaken to examine the role of superoxide in DNA damage. The release of thymine from the DNA base, thymidine was studied as a result of gamma-irradiation and of chemically generated superoxide (using KO2 in dimethyl sulfoxide). Thymine was identified by HPLC and mass spectrometry. C-13 NMR analysis of the reaction mixture of thymidine with KO2 in dimethyl sulfoxide provided evidence for attack of .O2 at the ribosyl Cl' atom.     

The next step in biology: A periodic table?

Systems biology is an approach to explain the behaviour of a system in relation to its individual components. Synthetic biology uses key hierarchical and modular concepts of systems biology to engineer novel biological systems. In my opinion the next step in biology is to use molecule-to-phenotype data using these approaches and integrate them in the form a periodic table. A periodic table in biology would provide chassis to classify, systematize and compare diversity of component properties vis-a-vis system behaviour. Using periodic table it could be possible to compute higher-level interactions from component properties. This paper examines the concept of building a bio-periodic table using protein fold as the fundamental unit.     

A new species of water mite <Emphasis Type="Italic">Atractides</Emphasis> (<Emphasis Type="Italic">Atractides</Emphasis>) <Emphasis Type="Italic">turcicus</Emphasis> sp. n. (Acari: Hydrachnidia: Hygrobatidae) from Turkey

In this study, the structural characteristics, unique features, various organ measurements of males and females of the water mite Atractides (Atractides) turcicus sp. n. from Turkey are described. In addition, the study compares their characteristics with related species.     

In vitro propagation of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Helleborus</Emphasis> species

A general in vitro cloning system was established for four Helleborus species: H. argutifolius, H. foetidus, H. niger and H. orientalis. The plant material was introduced in vitro from axillary buds. A Murashige and Skoog (MS)—based medium (Murashige and Skoog 1962) was used supplemented with 2% (w/v) sucrose, 2-isopentenyladenine (2-iP) and 6-benzylaminopurine (BA). Multiplication rates depended on the genotype and varied from 1.3 for H. foetidus till 3.8 for H. niger. The first results showed that the rooting phase could be done ex vitro. Rooting was induced by a drench for one week in a solution of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA -3 mg l⁻¹) and 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA-1 mg l⁻¹) at 5°C.
