Aims
To investigate the association of demographic, clinical and psychosocial variables with levels of anxiety and depression in participants wearing an ocular prosthesis after eye enucleation.Methods
This cross-sectional study included 195 participants with an enucleated eye who were attending an ophthalmic clinic for prosthetic rehabilitation between July and November 2014. Demographic and clinical data, and self-reported feelings of shame, sadness and anger were collected. Participants also completed the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire, the Facial Appearance subscale of the Negative Physical Self Scale, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Regression models were used to identify the factors associated with anxiety and depression.Results
The proportion of participants with clinical anxiety was 11.8% and clinical depression 13.8%. More anxiety and depression were associated with poorer vision-related quality of life and greater levels of appearance concerns. Younger age was related to greater levels of anxiety. Less educated participants and those feeling more angry about losing an eye are more prone to experience depression. Clinical variables were unrelated to anxiety or depression.Conclusions
Anxiety and depression are more prevalent in eye-enucleated patients than the general population, which brings up the issues of psychiatric support in these patients. Psychosocial rather than clinical characteristics were associated with anxiety and depression. Longitudinal studies need to be conducted to further elucidate the direction of causality before interventions to improve mood states are developed. 相似文献132.

Objective: Women 25 to 45 years old are at risk for weight gain and future obesity. This trial was designed to evaluate the efficacy of two interventions relative to a control group in preventing weight gain among normal or overweight women and to identify demographic, behavioral, and psychosocial factors related to weight gain prevention. Research Methods and Procedures: Healthy women (N = 284), ages 25 to 44, with BMI < 30 were randomized to one of three intervention conditions: a clinic‐based group, a correspondence course, or an information‐only control. Intervention was provided over 2 years, with a follow‐up at Year 3. BMI and factors related to eating and weight were assessed yearly. Results: Over the 3‐year study period, 40% (n = 114) of the women remained at or below baseline body weight (±2 lbs), and 60% gained weight (>2 lbs). Intervention had no effect on weight over time. Independently of intervention, women who were older, not actively dieting to lose weight, and who reported less perceived hunger at baseline were more likely to be successful at weight maintenance. Weight maintenance also was associated with increasing dietary restraint (conscious thoughts and purposeful behaviors to control calorie intake) and decreasing dietary disinhibition (the tendency to lose control over eating) over time. Discussion: This study raises concern about the feasibility and efficacy of weight gain prevention interventions because most women were interested in weight loss, rather than weight gain prevention, and the interventions had no effect on weight stability. The systemic defense response of tomato plant in response to insect attack and wounding is regulated by the 18 amino acid peptide systemin and the phytohormone jasmonic acid (JA). Recent genetic analyses based mainly on spr (suppressors of prosystemin-mediated responses) mutant screens have led to the hypothesis that systemin acts at, or near, the site of wounding to amplify the production of JA, which in turn functions as a mobile signal to promote the systemic defense response. In order to identify more components involved in the systemin/JA-signaled defense response, we carried out a larger scale screen for new spr mutants in tomato. Here we describe the characterization of spr6, a mutant impaired in wound- and systemin-induced defense gene expression. Using a candidate gene approach based on genetic linkage, we demonstrate that spr6 is allelic to jai1-1, which is a loss-of-function allele of the tomato homolog of CORONATINE-INSENSITIVE1 (COI1), an F-box protein that is required for JA-signaled processes in Arabidopsis. We show several aspects of the spr6 mutant phenotype distinct from that of jai1-1. First, the responsiveness of spr6 plants to exogenous JA shows a dosage dependency, i.e. it is more sensitive to JA than jai1-1 while less sensitive to JA than the wild-type. Secondly, unlike the sterile jai1-1, the spr6 plant displays normal fertility and seed set and thus can be maintained as a pure line and does not require selection. Therefore, spr6 provides a valuable tool, which can complement the limitations of jai1-1, to study JA signaling in tomato. The gene identification process of Spr6 we described herein represents an example showing the convenience of a candidate gene approach, based on genetic linkage, to identify gene functions of genetic loci defined by tomato wound response mutants. 相似文献

Genetic models for quantitative seed traits with effects of several major genes and polygenes, as well as their GE interaction, were proposed. Mixed linear model approaches were suggested for analyzing the genetic models. Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to evaluate unbiasedness and efficiency for estimating fixed effects and variance components of the embryo and the endosperm models, including effects of a major gene from an unbalanced modified diallel mating design with nine parents, respectively. Simulation results showed that estimates of generalized least squares (GLS) were unbiased and efficient, while those of ordinary least squares (OLS) were almost as good as GLS. Minimum norm quadratic unbiased estimation (MINQUE) could obtain unbiased estimates of the variance components. It was also suggested that precision of MINQUE estimation would be improved with augmentation of experimental size. Data from a modified diallel design in upland cotton ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) were used as a worked example to illustrate the parameter estimation. 相似文献

Unlike the well-established picture for the entry of enveloped viruses, the mechanism of cellular entry of non-enveloped eukaryotic viruses remains largely mysterious. Picornaviruses are representative models for such viruses, and initiate this entry process by their functional receptors. Here we present the structural and functional studies of SCARB2, a functional receptor of the important human enterovirus 71 (EV71). SCARB2 is responsible for attachment as well as uncoating of EV71. Differences in the structures of SCARB2 under neutral and acidic conditions reveal that SCARB2 undergoes a pivotal pH-dependent conformational change which opens a lipid-transfer tunnel to mediate the expulsion of a hydrophobic pocket factor from the virion, a pre-requisite for uncoating. We have also identified the key residues essential for attachment to SCARB2, identifying the canyon region of EV71 as mediating the receptor interaction. Low pH is a well known sensory irritant in pathological conditions such as inflammation. The mechanisms underlying this low pH effect were therefore studied in the guinea pig. Acid exposure caused marked nasal irritation via a specific subset of sensory nerves sensitive to capsaicin. Furthermore, acid caused bronchoconstriction via release of neuropeptides from capsaicin sensitive afferents. Interestingly, capsazepine, a recently developed competitive capsaicin receptor antagonist, selectively inhibited these responses to low pH. Ruthenium red, which blocks the cation channel associated with the capsaicin receptor, had effects similar to those of capsazepine. Therefore, acid irritation of the airway mucosa may involve capsaicin-receptor mechanisms and capsazepine represents a novel protective agent. 相似文献

Polyamines are small aliphatic amines found in almost all organisms, ranging from bacteria to plants and animals. In most plants, putrescine, the metabolic precursor for longer polyamines, such as spermidine and spermine, is produced from arginine, with either agmatine or ornithine as intermediates. Here we show that Arabidopsis thaliana(Arabidopsis) arginine decarboxylase 1(ADC1), one of the two known arginine decarboxylases in Arabidopsis, not only synthesizes agmatine from arginine, but also converts N~δ-acetylornithine to N-acetylputrescine. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that duplication and neofunctionalization of ADC1 and NATA1, the enzymes that synthesize N~δ-acetylornithine in Arabidopsis, co-occur in a small number of related species in the Brassicaceae. Unlike ADC2, which is localized in the chloroplasts, ADC1 is in the endoplasmic reticulum together with NATA1, an indication that these two enzymes have access to the same substrate pool. Together, these results are consistent with a model whereby NATA1 and ADC1 together provide a pathway for the synthesis of N-acetylputrescine in Arabidopsis. 相似文献
